I think it's hard for an american to understand how much French culture there is in this movie. A lot of time you seemed shocked by the dialogues but there is no flaming or moking him. He's just being himself; a street guy talking to a rich man.

it's just humour, no bad intentions, I think Philippe being intelligent guy really appreciated Driss's attitude, he didn't treat him like an egg but like a full-fledged person. I love this movie, great story and ESPECIALLY no cringe dialogues.

One of the best movies I've ever watched! Isn't this the best example that there's more than Hollywood? We can make good movies, too, us Europeans, right? I think so. Merci beaucoup pour ce chef-d'oeuvre, la France! Very kind regards from Germany.

Historically I would even go so far as to say that the only reason why Hollywood became the worlds foremost moving pictures entertainment industry is the 3rd Reich. Because all the good german artists and film-makers fled the Nazis and went to L.A. Without the 3rd Reich, UFA in Berlin would now probably be the place where the center of the film industry would reside.

A great movie choice ! Of course, sadly the subtitles doesn't translate as best the dialogue's intentions (they deleted the 'bad words', expressions, the 'vouvoiement' like the spanish usted, which is used instead of a simple tu, references, etc etc). But it's really a nice-easy-to-watch movie. You probably have a long to-watch list, but if one-day you want to see another French movie, here's a few list of cool ones : Thriller : "Grave" (2016) Excellent animated movie about one's youth in Iran : "Persepolis"(2007) Indie movie street life in 90s France : "La Haine" (1995) Absurd movie : "Mandibles" (2020, any movie by Quentin Dupieux is awesome and quirky) Classic old school buddy movie : "La Grande Vadrouille" (1966) All nice movies for each of their styles !

I’m surprised you’ve tackled this and impressed in your attention to the clash, like fingernails on a blackboard, of cultures. Once getting past the initial confusion, the subject of this film is unique, but wears the badge of honour about people becoming a part of new families. As you experienced, the blood flows faster and the warmth of the story increases to the very end. Consider Amélie (2001, French) and Chocolat (2000, not French but set in France). Pick a cold night and let these gems warm your heart. As with all recommendations, check these with a trusted friend.

Glad to see someone reviewing a non-anime, non-English language movie. For more French language films try Amelie, Jean de Florette, Monsieur Hire, The Hairdressers Husband. Or if you want a brilliant and criminally underrated action flick, Le Pacte des Loups. Trois Hommes et un Couffin, Taxi and Le Cage aux Folles all had English language remakes and they could be good to compare...

There is no puritanism in France, thankfully. So, sex jokes, being direct with women, cannabis, and Hitler jokes are just fine. Plus, since adds for lawyers are illegal, nobody ever consider filling lawsuits for any such thing. I don't know anyone who ever filled a lawsuit for anything. This actually allows more freedom in speech, especially in media like cinema. This freedom is threatened these days, though.

The sentence "no hands, no chocolat" is pretty used and well know now 😂 This movie as be really, really liked in France ❤ It's talk to the heart and soul of many people, and the poor like the wealthy. And it's... Real. I mean it's not useless drama, or forceful twist. There are something true, as much as the way the actor play it. As the story is build. It's often crude, or even crass. But it's not cruel or malicious. It's only joking and dare to said the things. Some will find it's hurting ? Yet in reality it's saying "your human, your a guy, I respect you. You are not some brittle thing I have to take care." It's respect... Even if yes, I understand many will have a hard time to see it and understand it for what it is 🤔

It's as if in a world without tennis would appears the big 4 (Federer/Nadale/Djoko/Murray) in their prime, in the same tournament. I'm glad someone is mentioning this movie ! I was indeed "shaken" after I finished it, that's really the word. It haunted me for weeks after that. I watched it several times again throughout the years. It's always a powerful moment. I would say "Incendies" is one of my favorite movies. It feels sort of weird to say "favorite" with the subjects this movie tackles and its tone, all of it being serious, deep, dark, tragic etc, but it's just an excellent movie. It's definitely among the movies that left the most memorable impression on me. I can't forget the story and what it deals with because the acting was top notch, the story was very well written (and the music/bgm is as excellent as the rest). It's one of these rare movies for which I can't find any flaws. Sadly too few people talk about it or even know about it. It deserves to be known and talked about.

Love everything what Omar do. Back when hardly anybody know him. This is amasterpiece and of course he did aswell as anybody who work on this milestone in cinema. Omar was have to oversell it a bit, to get the balance the quite, not even moving co-partner. Love for life from coming from shit vs. have everything but happines. In cinema 30+ years, only the French can do this. So well balanced between chees/cringe call it it what you want and humor and drama. It is a very very fine line and keep on moving on it the hole movie is one of the hardest work in this art style.

I love The Upside, the remake of this movie…unpopular opinion, apparently…but the original, man…I LOVE the original! Omar Sy is amazing.

It's horrible to feel like a victim and thinking yourself as damaged goods. But this movie shows that things do get better if you get out of that mindset! I think of them on most of my days.

It's pretty funny to see how they refer to the people "up north", for me (A Belgian) Paris is up north.

The two directors of the movie did another with Omar Sy and the woman who interview him (the one with Dali's painting) on it years before, " Nos jours heureux " who takes place in a summer camp

If you wondered about the value of the painting, I converted it with a site and it's the equivalent of 11761,75 american dollars And the real Philippe died at 72 last year.

@@NiaMakiReacts he was right when in the movie, he said the doctors will help him to live until 70 years old. He even live longer. I don't advice you to watch the american remake because I'm afraid the essence of the movie won't be the same. You should watch the french movie " Les Choristes " it's a classic too and so good. If you saw the movie " Dead poets society " it's kind of the same vibes. The TV movie " Ali Baba et les 40 voleurs " is a good one too (the MC played in " Les Choristes " too)
