The 1979 Nicaraguan revolution that overthrew a brutal U.S.-backed dictator ushered in a wave of hope in the Central American country. The new Sandinista government launched literacy and healthcare campaigns, carried out land reform and promised to improve the lives of all. But the United States, under President Ronald Reagan, feared the dominos would fall across Central America, and they unleashed assault on the country: paramilitary war, CIA attacks, economic blockade, and much more.
In this episode, host Michael Fox walks back into the 1980s, to the overthrow of dictator Anastasio Somoza and the beginning of both the Sandinista government and the U.S. response. This is Part 1 of Episode 10.
Under the Shadow is an investigative narrative podcast series that walks back in time, telling the story of the past by visiting momentous places in the present.
In each episode, host Michael Fox takes us to a location where something historic happened - a landmark of revolutionary struggle or foreign intervention. Today, it might look like a random street corner, a church, a mall, a monument, or a museum. But every place he takes us was once the site of history-making events that shook countries, impacted lives, and left deep marks on the world.
Hosted by Latin America-based journalist Michael Fox.
This podcast is produced in partnership between The Real News Network and NACLA.

I'm unsubscribing because the real news network sacked Chris Hedges, not because he's not a good journalist - he's one of the best - but because someone didn't like what he was saying.

I’m unsubscribing. It has nothing to do with this video. It has everything to do with you-know-who. Very disappointed in your decision.

Ronald Reagan show all future presidents how to wear two faces correctly. One for the camera the American people could see. One for his own agenda. This is still how our leaders operate. Say what the people want to hear. Do the most atrocious acts in the back rooms. A true piece of work. He learned a lot from Hollywood. And all since learned from Reagan.

Why did Real News oust Chris Hedges???? His podcast was the best thing the channel had!!! Even though you're talking about Nicaragua, my country which is interesting, I will unsubscribe. Your channel should be ashamed to have canceled Mr. Hedges. Did he become too real for you guys? I thought that was your goal, I was very wrong.

Control over its land&resources &location, kindof like Gaza, land &resources&location on the Med.sea for ports, but in Gaza there's 500billion$ worth of oil&gas just off shore in the Levant. Same reason for war on Syria they hold rights to the oil&gas off shore. Assad says no to western extraction interests as it belongs to Syrian people. SO the corporate control of gov't. They are able to command the military and fool the AM.public into paying half of discretionary spending to fund the usa military. Then there's the contractors&weapons dealers.

@@Johnconnonot really.. we can see now with Biden the human trafficking which is obvious to everyone.. I would say with Nicaragua it was teaming up with the local drug cartels.. very profitable business .. CIA ran that whole show
