The cammer with the donkeys has good taste in music, and by happenstance it was just perfect for the situation. Slightly spoiled by the following vehicle's tailgating, but a marvellous example of calmly letting the animals work it out. On my playlist, the track following that is T'Pau's _Heart and Soul_ . (-:

I assume the tailgating was to block any gaps the donkeys could walk into, yes it was a little scary but at such slow speeds hopefully it was to make it safer for both vehicles to get through.

@@Chalkie1983 Personally, I'd put it down to the same instinct that had several of the donkeys tailgating each other. We have animal instincts too. Don't try to herd livestock with a motor vehicle. If the donkey wants to go in between, let it, and do the same stop and ultra slow crawl that the cammer was doing. It's the same principle as not tailgating people through a flooded ford. Handle the problem one vehicle at a time if necessary.

Clip 2: Excellent use of horn. This also brings up an interesting point that on occasion, your passengers (and indeed other road users) don't always understand the reason you are doing something. This can even apply to passengers who drive. One of whom asked me why I turn my head to the right when changing to a lane to my right. I explained to them it was to check my blind spot. To which they replied " I just check my mirror. Surely that's enough?".

Years ago I had a tailgater on a long single track road who was really getting on my nerves so I pulled up in a passing place. He pulled up behind me got out and told me I couldn't park there. I told him "I haven't parked, I have stopped to let people pass but they have parked behind me".

Oh goodness! Some folks are incredibly dim! Similar are the folks that tailgate even though there is a perfectly safe and legal opportunity for them to overtake. I've even had this when driving in the left hand lane of motorways and dual carriageways, with nothing whatsoever in the next lane over to prevent the tailgaiter from overtaking. In those situations, I might ease off the gas slightly to give them further encouragement to overtake...and sometimes they just slow down with me. The mind boggles!

What a beautiful passively safe environment in the first clip. Split the 2 directions so overtakes are ruled out. *Just* wide enough for an emergency vehicle to pass. Tight roundabout design to prevent straight lining, with an overrun high enough to be unusable at speed by cars. Drainage round the outside so the slight adverse camber encourages speed reduction. Continuous ~4m cycle track plus ~2.5m footpath crossing the road at pavement on a speed cushion. Give way sharks' teeth on the exits where cycle / foot ways exist. I want some.

Clip #1 - I've even parked up to let a tailgater past. I want them where I can watch them..... in front of me. I hate it and yes it puts me on edge. I know I'm observing things but if they're tailgating then they're not looking properly, just eyes glues to my rear end. #2 - this horn use is something I need to do more of myself. On the video for the 'tail swing', this is what I look out for too. You get a lot more swing with some buses due to the rear axle / body shape designs. A lot of great clips, thx Ashley 🙂👍🏻

I frequently use the "all the way around the roundabout" trick to allow following traffic to pass, particularly when driving an HGV. It's much easier than pulling over into a layby (when you then have to wait for a decent gap to be able to pull back out again), and saves a bit of fuel because you don't come to a complete stop.

4:30 I remember being on a bus in Italy on a narrow, very twisted route up the mountains. The driver used horn at every. single. turn. (And there was a turn every few seconds it seemed like). That last clip is always nice to see. Many times I have been in a long queue of traffic along the road to find a small branch in the carriageway. Quick blast of the hazards, pop out and move the branch to the side and the traffic is clear within a couple of minutes. I draw the line at complete trees, telegraph poles or large animals. I’ve even stopped to give someone a push (and the odd tow with a rope) that had broken down to a safer place I would like to add that I grew up in rural areas where it was down to the local population to keep roads clear and open. The unfortunate mentality of most these days is that it is someone else that should be doing things when in fact, if we all help each other out, things run a lot better. I live in a town now but still keep the gulley outside ny house clear to the drains on the road, no puddles forming on my watch! Well done everyone in all these clips, top driving

I’m too laid back for all that and if people want to raise heart rates and stress levels then they can do it themselves, I’ll wait until they finish and carry on. Driving in London was the worst for that for me, many times I’ve been shouted at for being stationary on a green light while the queue of cars in front isn’t moving, or having four lanes of traffic along a two lane road and people fighting for that last half inch of spce. Good point on treating passing places like navigating around parked cars. I think it's probably to do with the fact that most single track roads are on peaceful country roads, whereas around parked cars is typically busier, so you're more likely to come across aggressive drivers in that situation. In other words, drivers are typically more relaxed on a country road, and therefore more likely to be considerate of others.

I agree that it's down to the mentality of people used to using these roads. As an example, we once had a big A road we were travelling on closed down (a 3 car collision) and people coming in both directions ended up taking a diversion through single track roads. The selfishness and lack of respect & consideration when navigating these roads at this time was unlike anything I'd seen on these roads before. @@robg521 Could be, but then it could also be the cammer has HGV experience of their own so they have developed that implicit sense of how the trailer is going to behave in a given situation. You kind of need to develop that sense for where the boundaries of the vehicle are and where they are going if you intend to operate said vehicle without hitting anything. Granted I have never driven a HGV but having experienced operating an aircraft that is about the same length around you get an implicit sense of where the tail will be despite not being able to physically see it. Granted it is somewhat less of an issue there as the wingspan is also very wide so a lot of the swing is within the area that will be swept by the wings anyway, but it is still something you develop a sense of when taxing around.

Do you also slow down when traffic is moving slower in the other lanes? Many times I’ve had aggressively drivers behind me tailgating and flashing lights (which I ignore) as I’m doing 15mph on the motorway in a lane marked at 40 while, although our lanenis clear the lanes either side of me are stopped or 5mph. I’ve seen too many drivers see a “gap” and pull out from stationary so for me I take the motorcycle filtering approach, slightly faster than surrounding traffic but not too fast that it dramatically increases risk Same approach on standard roads as well, queue of traffic in one lane means either someone pulling out of a side road, someone pulling out of the queue or as in a recent video by Ashley, a pedestrian coming across the road without looking. As a wise man keeps saying…stay safe everyone ;)

The very first clip is clearly in NL, and is taught as standard practice there. This goes with the NL government's long-standing policy of building roads with only one lane in each direction as a traffic calming measure, with the left-over space used to give pedestrians and cyclists a safe route. There was an ambulance-dashcam channel for a while which commented on this very factor when it cropped up, which was often. One theory regarding roads with passing places is that they tend to occur in very rural and sparsely populated areas, where the pace of life is generally slower. Yes, there are visitors from elsewhere, but most of the time, most of the users of these roads are familiar not only with the road but with each other. In urban streets where the road is effectively reduced to a single lane by parked cars on both sides, you naturally get a lot more in the way of impatient drivers, who are that much more likely to place their own convenience above the greater good. It's also a fact that "single lane roads with passing places" are specifically called out with appropriate procedures in the Highway Code, and by road signs as you enter them. That undoubtedly helps visitors to rural areas to understand what behaviour is expected. No such specific reminders are present on an ordinary residential street, unless it's been made one-way as a traffic calming measure.

The donkeys in the New Forest is very common - as well as ponies of course, and often cattle too. Despite it being so common I'm sick of seeing people driving at them aggressively. I even saw one driver trying to physically barge cattle out of the way in their car a few years back. I was very impressed when the animal stood its ground and butted the wing of the vehicle leaving a nice dent before casually walking off.

I was driving in London for the first time in years last night, I was attempting to emerge to the right of a fairly narrow T junction, after waiting a short while, a bus wanted to enter the road I was on from my right, it managed to do half of the turn and stopped to signal that I needed to move; I waited for 5-10 seconds and a scooter came around the back of the bus at 20-25mph, very glad videos like this and others from this channel are around, else i'd probably have a written off car! Sadly no dashcam yet, all of the current options feel mediocre for image quality (they can rarely read a plate in low light).

On single track roads with passing places: I agree, co-operation is more common on the single track road. I suspect this is because the people driving on single track roads simply aren't in as much of a hurry. Urban drivers are more likely to be trying to get somewhere on a schedule in heavy traffic.

Hello Ashley. Just joined your channel. Very much enjoying the info you are putting out. Still got a lot of back vids to watch. Besides, bad road positioning, not signalling on exit on roundabout. Fog lights is something that is very annoying to me. Sometimes I think people think, it’s some kind of force field, if I put my rear fog lights on, nobody will rear end me. On a motorway where you can see a long way ahead, aways looks like someone is breaking. When it’s the car in front, dazzling. If the car has two rear fog lights, much harder to see when they break. Please can you put a vid out about the use of fog lights rule 226. Keep up the good work.

Single track road in the country compared to single lane remaining after parking... when it's the single track road you know that there are passing places and you know where they are, and you often have a great view up ahead, a bit of certainty. When it's parked cars you often can't see whether or not there's a space, but after many goes you find there often is, so you end up learning to just try and go for it and then you seem like you barged if there turns out to be no spaces howevee, if you don't do this you simply can't go down the road at all since there is no way to see for sure.

Driving through the tunnels is probably the most frustrating part of my commute. Every single day without fail I'll get tailgated, even had it in cold or wet conditions. I do need to be calmer dealing with it, but it's so frustrating since you can't do much other than drive normally and keep the distance between you and the car in front. It's probably the only thing I get worked up about though, since it's so frustrating and dangerous

2:45 Great timing with that question. Other night I'm driving along a residential street, cars parked all on one side pretty much bumper to bumper, very few places to pull a 5m long van in to. So once me and the 3 drivers behind negotiate the bus coming the other way, we start progressing along. Good visibility in to the distance, speed around 20. About 200m along I see the headlights of something oncoming, little bit of brake for the people behind, more brake as the oncoming isn't slowing down, and then to a stop as the oncoming is still driving at me - who's just passed a wide open T junction on their right, about 45m from where I've stopped. We're all sat still for about 45s while the driver gestures "go back." So I switch of and walk around the front of my van to explain there's no where I can pull in to. First words from them "You're going too fast on my side of the road! I'm not going back!" There's now a queue of traffic waiting on the far side of the T junction and more behind me. I jump back in and in to reverse for the 230m reverse back to the previous T junction. They stop as they're going past to tell me I "shouldn't be driving on their side of the road anyway!" 👏 So to answer your question Ash, some people seem to believe "my side/lane" is more important than everything else, and those people will happily risk a head on to try to make that point. Hopefully that driver encounters a bus in similar circumstances one day, the bus company has a policy of no reversing without a banksman and will happily sit where they are with the keys out until their Transport Manager gets there.

On beckoning… I was stopped waiting to turn right down a supermarket car park aisle. Aside from waiting for oncoming traffic to clear, there were also cars manoeuvring in and out of spaces, and others wanting to exit soon after in the aisle I wanted to turn down, so if I turned i’d be left with my rear half obstructing the main road. The oncoming driver beckoned me to make my turn in from a distance but they had no way of being able to see what was going on where I wanted to turn so it took a couple of tries of me beckoning them to carry on

I think the single-track road vs parked vehicle thing is probably because so many drivers are unfamiliar with them and they were very well marked in the clip. I use them a lot round here and I have found drivers are very reluctant to reverse, even just a few yards, preferring instead to 'force' the oncoming driver to reverse much further than they would have to. When you drive on them regularly, you learn to look for places to pull in and note them as you drive past. We don't have such well-marked passing places either, and people will park in them too, even if it's there primarily to allow large farm vehicles to swing out of a field entrance. Consequently, I'm equivocal about whether drivers are better around parked cars or passing spaces.

By far one of your best videos. Just discovered your Nice driving series. Could someone please further explain the ambulance driver turning right (the cam drivers left) and the cyclists and horses?
@misterflibble9799
@misterflibble9799 Жыл бұрын
Ambulance - the cammer noticed from a long distance away that the ambulance was wanting to turn, and thus stopped before the junction to allow them to turn. This gave the ambulance lots of notice that the cammer had given way to them, and therefore the ambulance could approach the junction and take the turn at a higher speed than they might otherwise had been able to use. Had the cammer carried on through, it's possible that traffic following the cammer might not have realised that the ambulance wanted to turn until much later, and thus the ambulance driver would have had to approach the corner with more caution, possibly even having to wait for someone to let them turn. Cyclists/horses - Horses can easily be spooked by unexpected occurrences. In some cases, they're spooked by noisy vehicles; in other cases, they can be spooked by the sudden appearance of a vehicle with no obvious audible warning (i.e. a cycle, which is almost silent). Although I didn't hear it on the audio, Ashley said that the cyclists warned the horse riders of their approach, and that they were intending to pass. This gave the horse riders the opportunity either to communicate back that the cyclists should wait and avoid passing (if the rider knows that the horse is particularly jittery), or communicate any other appropriate warning. They also did the overtake at a suitable speed and distance. Having completed the overtake, the cyclists then pulled over and slowed down to allow a following car to pass.

Clip 6: I would have definitely held back on the HGV to the right of me just as the cammer did. The one exception might be if both myself and the HGV were waiting right at the Give Way line for the roundabout to clear. In that scenario, a car can easily out accelerate an HGV onto the roundabout, even taking into account that the HGV can start to move slightly earlier, since any traffic on the roundabout will clear the HGV first.

Parked vehicles causing aggro v. Passing places: I think there’s 2 reasons for parked cars causing aggro. 1. When cars are parked either side then both drivers perceive they have priority when often neither has. 2. When cars are parked on both sides, having offered priority and waited a few times a driver can then believe they are due priority next time, when in actual fact each situation involves new drivers and your actually not due anything! Priority is always offered never taken

0:10 Going around the roundabout had to be done, as overtaking is not possible on this road. This is a good example of the way Dutch country roads are engineered for safety. It's a single lane, but dual-carriageway to prevent overtaking, as this is the main cause of bad collisions on these types of road. The speed limit is a mere 50kph. Also note how pedestrians and cyclists are banned from the road, because an excellent, wide segregated cycle path AND separate footway are also provided along the whole length of the route. The cars also have to give way to the concentric cycle lane going around the periphery of the vehicular roundabout.

Far from the "horn first, brake later" mentality you see on these dash cam channels, I'm often finding myself making such incidents "non-events" now. Single track roads parking places and obstructions: I agree people tend to be pretty good at using single track roads and in general if there's parked cars causing an obstruction or reducing the road to effectively single track, people cope well. But if a utility company cause an obstruction with roadworks, no bigger than a few parked cars, they feel the need to come two days earlier, erect traffic lights, cones signs, the whole works, seems a little unnecessary to me. And the traffic lights will be there for days after they've long gone.

8:50 - Ashley - although not taking anything away from the cammer's driving, part of the reason for staggered formation and drivers appearing to hold back is that that section of road is a SPECS 50mph average speed camera zone (it's the A338 heading into Bournemouth :-)
