Episode #25 of the series which is the stereotypical opposite of most other Dashcam compilations seen on KZbin. In this upload, we see possibly the calmest reaction to a near death experience ever.

I like these compilations far more than fail compilations. with annoyance of drivers driving poorly, it encourages to keep driving to good standards when you feel like giving up because of how bad it’s getting on the roads. Hats off to all these drivers 👍

On the matter of the goslings, a few years ago I was driving along a narrow country road in Burgundy and came up behind 3 ewes leading a group of a dozen or so lambs. I slowed right down, expecting to have to follow them for a few hundred yards. However, there was an open gate into a field just ahead and the ewes led the flock into the field. I drove past and looked in the mirror and, to my surprise, saw the ewes lead them out again onto the road. It's not just humans who have good road sense.

There are days where you can drive for hundreds of miles and driving is enjoyable, rewarding: it's the days where complete strangers help each other out, yield space, you give space and above all you're all switched on to the other people's needs. They are the days created by these clips. The blue car and truck, yes, life saved, good job the tanker was empty.

At around 2:20, as a general principle, any time you are on any kind of dual carriageway or motorway with no hard shoulder, it really pays to look well ahead and be on very high alert for this sort of thing, namely a stationary vehicle in Lane 1. hi-vis/reflectives never increases safety, neither do DRLs. Both actually create worse scenarios as the vulnerable get coerced/forced to wear (or so) something, with DRls, it becomes a light war, and from that we have the absolute clusterfuck of overtly bright lights even in broad daylight that causes problems, never mind at dusk, night or when it rains!

The driver who stopped for the low-loader reminded me of stopping on a similar bend for a tank transporter one morning (complete with a larger tank than I'm used to seeing - we get quite few round here). I saw the narrowing gap, the squaddie saw it but the bloke in the pickup behind went mental as he pulled up about a foot short of my back bumper. I didn't have the choice or the need to pull onto the pavement but next time you tailgate me, think on - you are almost certainly the reason I'm driving slower in the first place. I'm not about to lose half my car because you can't get out of bed early enough.

You know, I have never been annoyed at at animal blocking the road. They can't help it because they don't understand what roads and cars are. People do, so their behaviour should be held to a higher standard. It IS genuinely nice to see some collaborative road use too, so thanks for putting these compilations together Ashley.
@ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 Жыл бұрын
And yet motorists insist on pedestrians and people on bikes wearing his vis/reflectives. But when it comes to animals, fallen trees, debris etc no mention of it. Not only does hi-vis/reflectives not change outcomes, it pushes onus onto vulnerable persons (to not get harmed) which has never, ever improved safety outcomes in any aspect of human life, only made matters worse in fact. So your point about persons in motors being held to a higher standard is absoutely correct, it's just that it seemingly only applies in certain scenarios and not when it comes to the more vulnerable/at risk persons in the vast majorit of cases.

There are many benefits to a staggered formation along a road. The one benefit seen in the clip here is if a vehicle decides to move over there is room. Then you have the benefit that is someone / something comes into your path unexpectedly (pedestrian for example) you have an escape route Then there is the benefit for two wheels who will be able to filter safer and quicker thus aiding best flow. There appears to be a need for some drivers to get as close to vehicles in front, or alongside without fully assessing or understanding that risk increases and flow decreases

Reminded me of a few years ago, sitting at the side of a road with a learner, ahead a female pheasant appeared from the long grass, and set off across the road, followed by three babies. All the way across, quite a wide road, and across the grass the other side, probably a similar distance, and into the trees. Just as she entered the trees, male pheasant appeared from the left, from where female and babies had emerged. So the male was quite a long way behind, leaving childcare entirely to the female. We watched, amused, then my female learner said, "typical male".

I've just spent a couple of weeks there myself, in from Germany so the culture shock in terms of roads was even bigger as the average German road is already so much wider than the average (non-Devon) English road... I feel like I need to stand up for the Devon drivers as my experience was quite different. Almost never met impatient drivers, no crazy overtakes, no pressuring when I was driving a bit slower than the locals to preserve my own sanity. And on those narrow roads in particular everyone is so helpful and instantly goes for the reverse trying to help you out. 1:53 as a cyclist, albeit one in London where the overall level of driving is much less patient, I'd actually be quite happy for a car to keep rolling slowly at this sort of situation. We are a different kind of road user, so I don't think the approach has to be "exactly the same as if they were a car" but this was obviously just somebody being very nice, which is always appreciated!
@joncurtis199
@joncurtis199 Жыл бұрын
I would not be happy with this as a driver and regularly let cyclists by in streets like this in London. If I'm on a road like this ill take a centre position. For starters we're supposed to give cyclist 1.5m - that wont happen here. There would also be hazards from the parked cars or pedestrians around them. Its just an easier, safer bet to allow a cyclist through for the expense of 5 seconds
@_Shadbolt_
@_Shadbolt_ Жыл бұрын
@@joncurtis199 yeah I do very occasionally meet drivers who wait for me in that situation (I commute via a little 500m side-road off Edgware Road just like the one in the vid daily) but meeting drivers who'd wait in that situation is incredibly rare, to the point where it can actually feel a bit embarrassing 😅 I 100% agree you're doing the safest and correct thing but it's not really the reality on London roads as you'll be well aware I'm sure! The slightly subtler point I was thinking about is this "treat them like any other car" which I don't know if I agree with. The 1.5m example you gave is a good, if again largely unobserved, rule in that vein: cyclists are given a specific rule about passing meterage because of the more "vulnerable" position we're in. And while I appreciate this 1.5m acknowledgement, I think it should come hand-in-hand with the liberties like filtering etc. that are an active advantage especially in city traffic. We're a different kind of road user and I think ultimately separating us as much from cars (or pedestrians for that matter) will help the cause overall. Waffly but hope it makes sense! Not arguing, just discussing an interesting point.

Knowing that area makes it worse as I have just checked on Google Maps and yep if he had turned left or gone straight on, he could have turned around quickly and safely and probably only taken a minute or two. I am not going to make any stereotypical comments about it being a car with a certain four rings as always I blame the driver, not the brand and that confirmation bias has a big impact. Drivers like this is a big reason I started driving and stopped riding as after COVID-19 the roads started to feel unsafe daily commuting on a motorbike compared to riding for 8+ hours a day during COVID as a home carer.

I always love to see a good bit of driving and good planning when it comes to emergency vehicles, if we all work together and make way they'll get to where they need to go without any delays

At around 6:39, perhaps an earlier opportunity to go up on the pavement then, before reaching the pedestrian. Having said that, given where the cammer had got to, I feel the HGV driver should have recognised the situation with the pedestrian on the pavement and waited for them to walk past the cam car to give the cammer more time to go up on the pavement. I felt the HGV driver was rushing things a bit there. And what a great mention of Ashley Neal in that clip, who indeed has stated that although going up on the pavement is illegal, it's sometimes the only choice.

The last clip reminds of 1 day a few years ago while I was riding down the canal. I saw a female duck in the middle of the tow path, and she wouldn't move. I slowed, rang the bell and she wouldn't budge. It was only when I stopped that I saw why: several fluffy chicks waddling across the path before dropping into the water. Only when all had crossed did she follow. Mum seeing her kids across the road, made my day.

The clip with the German car emerging from the right, it is common in NZ for that hash marked area to be a lane into which right turning traffic can pull out and then merge with traffic. It makes that right turn onto a busy road a little easier, rather than waiting for clear road in both directions, often its only 20 or 30 metres, but it makes a difference.
@PedroConejo1939
@PedroConejo1939 Жыл бұрын
I wondered that. It's common enough in Spain but I've seen and have done it here. Just sit with your left indicator on and there's usually someone who'll let you in. Some of the rural A roads here are so busy that short of turning left then making a turn further on (which is very common here), it can be an all day job to get across.

@@PedroConejo1939 I remember a junction in Majorca where you could not turn left, you had to go straight and then the road looped to bring you onto the carriageway you had crossed.

@@iallso1 Yeah, the old turn right to turn left thing. Not very common these days and there were none where we lived. There were some in and around small towns that we'd see. I never did understand the logic unless it was to avoid having traffic sat in the middle of the road, waiting to turn.

I wouldn't say that the lorry driver at 3:50 does a "brilliant job", even though he was trying to be considerate to oncoming traffic. That's a description that I would only consider appropriate if he hadn't been stopped on the "Keep Clear" markings - if the cam car had been intending to take the road on the right the lorry would have been obstructing the entrance.

At around 3:38, what is it with drivers who like to drive fast...but can't do anything skillfully. All they know is how to drive fast but nothing else. Well, we all know what makes a car go fast, it's the accelerator pedal. As the saying goes, any fool can drive fast enough to be dangerous. And yes, it would just have to be a well known German brand!

2:32 The lorry drivers hand gesture, open hand with palm facing towards themselves and fingers all pointing upwards. I'd interpret that hand gesture as "What the hell was that all about!" Like it was the stopped blue car fault they hadn't see it. Alternatively if the hand gesture had been the same but with the palm facing towards the cammer I'd interpret that as saying "Thank you." to the cammer for making space. Make me wonder what driver sign language is used, recognised and any regional or international variations. Well, just the helpful informative ones, I'm sure many offensive hand gestures don't need documenting on this driver education channel. Thank you again Ashley for all your educational content for all road users.

Good riding is always shown in cornering. This was very good riding skills. As a car driver I try and adopt roadcraft road positions on corners to improve my visibility and to improve visibility of other road users sooner. But in a bike it is so much more important. As a car driver I have to say that a bikes choice of position on the road is so important. A rider taking an offside position close to the centre can improve a cars view of them sooner. I always like to see good skill of riding and in driving as a RoSPA associate currently in training and close to my test and a DIAmond advanced motorist already. Poor riding is easy to spot mostly on corners, inexperienced riders with L plates I spotted the other day taking a nearside position when the corner needed an offside and I had positioned close to the nearside as per roadcraft so a driver not doing that would probably not have seen them until very late. The buildings completely blocked my view of them until I turned that bend on the opposite side. I said to my passengers that is an example of poor riding and why corner positions are so important. I don't know how much of positions is taught in standard riding but I know from RoSPA that they teach it a lot to riders. As a car driver I am not too sure but I always appreciate high level riding.

At around 3:12, yes I may very well have done the same as the cam car to accommodate the oncoming bus. I realise another option may have been to drive into the mouth of the side street to the left, that is, if you are sure via local knowledge that the oncoming bus would not itself be turning into that side street. In which case, stopping in the side street would indeed have been an option and once the bus passed the cars in front, they could have then started to move ahead.

Just the other day , I had a similar experience with birds on the road in East Kilbride . Crows had gathered in all directions to eat some thing edible on the road past a small roundabout and were reluctant to move. I tried to go slow and round them , worried I might squash them, but of course being so nice gave me a disadvantage and instead of flying off they stood their ground , so to speak,so I was stuck for a bit, with other drivers behind me getting impatient. Of course when I eventually got past, and the other cars flew, so to speak , toward them, that's what they did. 🙄

7:40 I think the driver got lucky those horses were pretty relaxed, I wouldn't recommend beeping a horn at a horse on the road even if it sounds friendly. Horses are flight animals and anything they perceive as a threat can cause a situation to escalate quite drastically. Since the driver was approaching from the shadows and the horses were in the sun the horses probably weren't able to see the car that easily and the sudden noise could have caused a reaction. Even if the horses are well trained it only takes one small thing to set them off, it doesn't seem worth the risk to make any sudden loud noises

Some really nice samples. None of this pish about you must do this in the highway code and making it into a problem all looking out for others which I like. Something I've started to do when cycling say if its a busy road or slightly narrow roads if a lorry is coming past and once they are past putting my hand up to let them know I'm safe and if they want to move back they can . They usually give a thank with the indicators. Plus I also believe a lot of these delivery drivers might be the same people many times and if you can act in a away that shows kindness they are more likely to look out for you on other evenings
