Sadly these comments help nobody - just like the cyclist comments. The vast majority of all drivers are reasonable, and there's no issues. Otherwise nobody would ever get anywhere. I for one am sick of the "white van man" stereotype. I drive a van, but I look around too. Much like you give dispensations to HGV drivers though, view is partially limited in most commercial vehicles.

Such a nice treat to see your Saturday video come in Ash. And a Nice Driving series no less. About to have breakfast and make a nice warm cuppa and then settle down to watch this on my 32 inch TV. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be home after 4 weeks in hospital being treated for leukemia. As you may know, I still face around 10 months of outpatient treatment, the first of which was yesterday. But at least I'm home now. Everyone is telling me how good I look and you'd certainly never know of my condition by looking at me. I look surprisingly fit and healthy. Thanks for your Saturday video Ash. It's a symbol that life continues despite the challenges I've been facing recently and I know I will come out the other side of this. I might even re read the new Highway Code whilst I take it easy here at home, all warm and cosy. Safe driving everyone and enjoy your Saturday. Ibrahim in Canterbury

Interesting new phrase to describe "driving in a staggered formation". Namely "pocket of space". Interestingly back in Canada, I've seen this whole concept described as "Gates", with the same concept of driving in such a way as to keep "Gates " open for yourself (side, front, rear), as opposed to closed of course.

WIt is not just motorists: with limited vision, and as a pedestrian, I always adopt a staggered ethos and look out for safer pockets if my space is infringed upon. But whilst I may also have priority when crossing the road, I'd rather wait to cross a road or signal mortorists to continue, and always aknowledge them with a thank you gesture.

We do have one of the best driving etiquettes in the world. I've just been in Peru where the standard is everyone is out for themselves, it's mostly just reactive driving and the extent to which people can anticipate you want the same space is so they can accelerate into it and close down your space. Junctions are frequently blocked causing gridlock and if you don't tailgate the vehicle in front or block the junction the car behind is either on the horn to you or looking to get around you to use that space.
@theyouofyesterday6254
@theyouofyesterday6254 Ай бұрын
It's like this in Marrakech and Dubai too - everyone for themselves, with frequent collisions and shouting matches in the streets! Every time I've been in a taxi in either place we've been involved in some form of altercation or collision because neither driver would back down and give up a bit of road space. When driving with my sister-in-law in Dubai she avoided all kinds of potential trouble by just backing off when appropriate and allowing people a bit of space on the road, whilst still being assertive enough to make progress. The horn also seems to be used whenever people want to - which is all the time! 😂

At around 5:36, this is also a very good example of not allowing yourself to be pressured by someone close behind you on these narrow winding country lanes. I've had similar to this video but with horse riders round the next bend...and a car tailgating me. And you'd think that after encountering the horses, the tailgater would back off but they continued. I let them past at the first available straight.
@PedroConejo1939
@PedroConejo1939 Ай бұрын
With the exception of phone use, I think tailgating is the single worst habit by drivers who don't think they're doing anything wrong. If you're being tailgated, not only do you have to think for the person behind, but it often limits how you are able to effectively deal with what's in front of you.
@nickramsden5366
@nickramsden5366 Ай бұрын
Amazing how many drivers don't anticipate the needs of others for best flow. Always be aware of what's around. Stay in lane 2 or 3 through junctions, just delay moving back, look left and assess the volume of joining traffic. Try and spot the coming conflicts. Even go from 1 to 3 if extremely heavy to allow max space for all.

Hi Ashley, some of what you do resonates for me because it is exactly how I have been doing things for years!, I never thought about it in terms of creating 'pockets', but just as it is with music the space between the notes is just as important as the notes themselves!. On reflection I think that I have been taking the whole thing as one entwined dynamic system where the elements, (the traffic), and the location, (the road or street), has fixed elements and mobile elements and the interesting bit is the relationships between those components, it is the sensible integration that concerns me. Not for the first time you say that judging speed and distance from dash-cam footage is more difficult but this is only because the screen display is entirely two-dimensional!. It is one more of those skills that improves with practise, in much the same way all cars seem to have slightly different curves in the wing mirrors, both the same on each model but varying between models, this made life interesting when I was swapping between my van and my car trying to reverse into and out of parking spaces in the street where I live all I had to do was give my brain a bit of time to catch up with my eyes! and switch to the other mind-map, again the primary key is always observation first consideration second, look-think-leap!, look again and have another little think!. Now that you have described and explained what you are thinking it has made me observe my own driving habits more 'objectively' and the next thing will be for me to consider which of my habits could and should be revised, never too late to learn!. Cheers, Richard.

At around 4:57 I hope the taxi driver behind the cam car felt a bit sheepish after sounding their horn and then realising why the cam car paused due to the bus running the red light. To me that's a good indication that the taxi driver doesn't check for cross traffic just because they have a green light.
@markwright3161
@markwright3161 Ай бұрын
They could also have been trying to reprimand the bus. Being observant doesn't mean they're guaranteed to be patient. I used to be a bit impatient. I used the horn once when someone didn't set off when the light turned green... from 3+ cars back from the one at the line (I maybe watched too many dashcam compilations from New York back then :)). I didn't realise it was a learner because of the angle the traffic in front was queuing onto this roundabout, I physically couldn't see the front car, just the space they hadn't yet moved into. Even back then though, I wouldn't have intentionally used the horn on a learner if I had known.
@Shiltz
@Shiltz Ай бұрын
The funny thing is that I've been catching that exact bus twice a day, 5 days a week for the past 8/9 years and it must've missed the turn because it's supposed to turn off onto the same road as the cam car. I suspect the bus driver didn't even notice the light due to a turning mistake and just went the whole way round without thinking about the lights. I'm not condoning their action, I'm just giving a potential cause. Honestly, if the cam car is a regular, good on them for not going through the green expecting the bus to turn left onto their road!

HC rule 239.

@@PedroConejo1939 to be fair, it's quite a "recent" addition to the test, added in precisely because we have far too many cars fighting for on street parking spaces, so it became a much more common thing to do. Easier and cheaper to tweak the test than redesign the majority of urban environments in the country (or even expect new development to have decent urban planning with regard to modern vehicle usage). Highway Code 239 still says "do not park facing against the traffic flow", but isn't a 'MUST NOT' so not backed by specific law. I suspect that in the event of a collision when doing so/pulling out, it could be used as evidence towards contributory negligence if things made it to court though (or even in extremis for a charge of 'without due care').

Completely idiotic as I obviously wasn’t stopping in the middle to go shopping. Ultimately the oncoming car waited for as both. This is the type of incident which makes it hard to give priority on a bike. Most of the time when you do the car behind will try to overtake. I know I’ve not given priority when I should have before and I’m not proud of it.

I wonder if it's something to do with without marking drivers naturally stagger as they don't know for sure where others are going, then with the lanes they assume drivers are going where the lane says so presume no necessity to stagger, not taking into consideration the other driver may be unfamiliar with the area and have made a mistake!

"They do that sort of thing from time to time", that is continental lorry drivers switching lanes across the hatched area, because they are in wrong one. They also have a habit of doing what this fella's done regardless of the traffic island they are on. She said " how do you know its foreign lorry". Oh I said that's easy, clock the trailer plate it will be different to ours, then there's the signage, and finally if you can't see the driver in his mirror or through his window then the unit will be a left hooker (left hand drive.) Hope that's of use to anyone.

@simonmeadows7961 Unlikely. Bikey was demonstrating their typical arrogant entitled selfish attitude. Rather than staying in the line of traffic to safely cross the bridge, bikey was determined not to slow for any reason, zooming from the inside to the outside without looking behind him and then overtaking on a very narrow bridge. Notice how he did not give the 1.5 metres space when overtaking the vehicles and by his own actions, prevented any oncoming vehicle being able to pass the oncoming traffic safely, as biky had put himself between the two narrow lanes of traffic. If anything, driver saw bikey on the inside & moved out a bit to stop bikey scratching his paintwork, trying to squeeze down the inside. Never of course thinking bikey would be so stupid as to overtake the traffic on a hump back bridge. Obviously underestimated the stupidity of bikeys.

Love the nice driving videos. Most driving videos are just people being idiots on the road, which as entertaining as it can be, isn’t as helpful as videos like this. I hope more videos like this become more the norm. I think these help people get the right attitude out on the road. I know they help me go through the right thought processes in these type of situations.

Thank you! I'm really pleased to read that you've taken that away from this video. 😊 I have cycled a lot over the last 25 years (I don't drive) and I really hate these narrow painted cycle lanes. I tend to cycle at the very edge of the lane or even in the 'traffic' lane to try to make people give me space, but that inevitably annoys some drivers who then give me a close punishment pass. There's very little you can do here as a cyclist except just avoid these lanes completely where possible! I feel so vulnerable! 😢

@@theyouofyesterday6254I actually prefer the bit of painted road masquerading as a bike lane. At least in Liverpool they are far safer, in my opinion and experience of using them, than the designated, segregated bike lanes. At the very least you don't get electric bike "couriers" approaching a foot away from you in the opposite direction at 25 mph. Far more reckless than most drivers and with zero regard for the highway code, if they even know what it is.

Thanks for another great “Nice Driving” video. Glad to see the pedestrian crossing rules being used so well in this example here. Unfortunately, not the case up in Windermere on Thursday where a large SUV car turned right from a main road into a side road where myself and my partner were already crossing the road. The driver continued to drive towards me at slow speed whilst I continued crossing the road stopping less than a foot away. The middle aged female driver then asked my partner (who had stopped crossing in the middle of the road) why I would do that! I bet she still thinks she was in the right and I was wrong. I can only hope that she mentioned it to someone who knew better.

3:36 Plenty of people just bomb it into that slight narrowing, which can cause some issues for traffic from the other side. I've seen it happen plenty of times where people have to serve to the point their right wheel leave the road. Luckily it's gravel right next to the road, but as you can see from this clip, it really isn't that big of a deal to just delay your acceleration. I've also seen people pretty much scrape the hedge to the right, but there is a driveway immediately after it. I once saw a near collision with somebody coming out of that driveway, since they can't see anything coming until they're pretty much on the road. The stones below the hedge were added not too long ago, because people would sometimes damage the hedge with the vehicle.

1:45 those temporary lights will likely have detected the emergency vehicle or even the pedestrian on the left and will trigger from those. I can speak from experience this year just walking past many temporary lights in my village (we've had countless roadworks this year) that they've often triggered just from me walking past (even at times on the opposite side of the road) when there has been no traffic around whatsoever!

At the 1:11 mark, the lorry is foreignregistered. If you have ever driven on the continent that is exactly the way lorries take roundabouts (in mirror image, of course). I'm not sure we can expect foreign drivers to drive exactly as a British drivers would. You have to be very caerful on continental roundabouts as there is very little indicating, and in Austia you will frequently see signs on roundabouts saying 'beim verlassen' (hope that is correct) meaning 'indicate on leaving'.

Exactly! I also walk a lot (I don't drive) and I'm teaching my 6 year old to always decide for for himself, and to wave on drivers who stop (unless, for example, it's at the end of a one way street and the car is going to have to wait to pull out anyway). I've explained (an demonstrates) to just walk away if they try to insist and he doesn't think it's safe. It's the pressure some drivers put on you to cross that I don't like, and some get quite aggressive about it, which can be intimidating to a child and make them cross without properly checking the road is clear in both directions 😢

The clip of the white van and the car with the canoe at about 6 minutes flags another issue. Pulling from lane 3 to 2 at that angle to the car in lane 1 means the van was approaching in the car drivers blind spot. With modern B pillars being so wide it is incredibly difficult to see someone coming from that direction. Had the car driver not seen it and pulled out they would both have been approaching the same spot at the same time. The van driver then must either brake while changing lanes or veer back to lane 3 at what is, for motorway speeds, quite a sharp angle. Neither is safe. I was never taught this but picked it up through a strong self preservation Instinct and always approach far enough behind to be steering straight in lane 2 before I pass a vehicle in lane 1 or get past the vehicle first and then change lanes.

Also don’t know if you’ve seen but that driving instructor released a new video and I’d say this one’s even worse than the last one. 1:40 - Depends on settings, it could be that these lights are set to cycle on interval; but given they're temporary, it's extremely unlikely, and is probably set on vehicle motion. However, given you can *see* the opposite queue (the White Van[?]) towards the end of the clip, you could potentially go for the idea of waiting until the opposite side has cleared and then proceeded through with caution (as that doesn't mean there isn't a concealed junction I can't see). Personally though, if it were me, given the police car is acting as a rather big christmas tree blockade (stopping anyone from progressing from the opposite direction) I would be inclined to proceed through behind them (even though its now changed to red), albeit with caution; if the person immediately behind me follows me through, that's their choice (though I wouldn't as the lights are now likely to have recognised 'motion' and tripped the sensor.

0:20 I'm curious. Do pedestrians legally have priority in cases like this or is it one of the cases where the Highway Code says that drivers 'should' yield but it is not backed by a binding law? Over here (DE), pedestrians do not share the priority rules for vehicles but drivers and cyclists must yield to pedestrians who are crossing a road they are about to turn into. Even if they haven't started crossing yet.

0:18 The pedestrian priority rules do apply at cross roads, however if you are going straight ahead you are not turning right or left in to or out at a junction. Then they do not relate to you. I am not saying this example of driving is bad or commenting on what we see. The point I am making is they are worded in a very bad way.

Good to see some of the kids stopping and looking before crossing, not sure on the numbers of people run over whilst on the pavement but I bet it is considerably lower than people being on the road. Its an easy rule to remember, vehicles on the road pedestrians on the pavement, if you need to cross just stop and look, it's not rocket science.
