Half the time is even being generous in my experience. 9/10 times the cammer speeds up/touches the horn before the brakes/brakes way too late or even cuts off/brakechecks someone he/she doesn't like. You'll sooner see a pink elephant in the wild than a cammer going around a mini roundabout at reasonable speed.
@KATCompositions
@KATCompositions 3 жыл бұрын
I distinctly remember one where a car emerges onto a roundabout and the cammer had plenty of time to stop but instead races toward them to have an accident. Ashley's comment about people trying to have a crash on roundabouts is actually very on point

5:35 The staggering also means they are much easier to see by other road users. 7:54 Add eye contact to the list. An amazing amount of information can flow in context and brief eye contact. It makes the other road user feel so pleased with life that they'll be an even better road user than normal for the the next 10 minutes.

3:08 This thoughtful lorry driver reminded me about a thoughtful school double decker bus driver I encountered after I had an accident. He stopped the bus full of children and came over using his nearside entrance to exit the bus. I was driving along a 40 mph dark section of dual carriageway when I hit something and stopped. I could see no damage on the car at the time and said something black had flown up in front of the car (this eventually turned out to be my plastic inner wing) nobody else stopped. He spotted a dead Muntjac deer lying in the road in lane one ahead of me in a lighted section of road. Like a true hero he lines up with the corpse and does aerial press ups to keep everyone safe. First driver through is in an eight wheel rigid tipper which fails to notice the situation. He ploughs straight into the corpse bursting it open like a giant boil and most of the entrails fly straight into the school bus driver. He says "Dirty f****** bas**** and the stinking bus driver walks past me back into the busload of kids and drives off.

03:41 - I've said it before a few times on here, I have a dislike of being in the blindspot or alongside these big vehicles (lorries, buses, etc.), especially when they're doing any sort of manoeuvre. Either get past or stay back, I don't sit alongside them if I can avoid it.

Absolutely. Been 11 months since I passed my test, still stuck with a black box and that's the only thing I'll break the speed limit for temporarily. Spend a lot of time on the motorways for work, within the first month I think nearly got taken out by a truck because I was in the blind spot and he started moving over.

Great video Ashley. I've been watching your videos for about a month, and I have to admit my driving has changed over that time. I've had my license for 19 years and other than one minor accident in my 1st year, I've never had any issues or speeding tickets, so I've considered myself a good driver. However, the way you describe some of these scenarios and the little observations you point out has really made me think a little more behind the wheel!! I have to confess my one weakness is allowing myself to get irritated and angry by other drivers' incompetence , but since trying to preempt and make a little more allowance for other people's poor driving, its also made me a lot less angry!!! :) Keep up the good work!

I love the positivity in this clip. Of course, it's so important to see how people do things badly, but it can be easy to let negative feelings fester when you do. It's nice to see some good driving as an alternative example. I found myself thinking I would make a lot of the same driving decisions as these drivers, so it's also great to have that positive reinforcement on my end :)

Appreciate the cycling tips. Right turns are hard on a cycle, esp. on fast country roads on a blind bend like that. Always try to get over quickly with a signal. The hardest part is if a car comes around the corner at the last second. Often have to stop suddenly then in the middle of the road. Good tip Ashley, I usually find if put hand out intending to turn drivers behind will slow down and give way. Best done early for sure.

Great video Ashley, it’s good to see people are getting that you cannot bully your way through our roads. One thing I would say is whereby someone ( and many people do ) lets an emerging vehicle join the motorway from a slip road ( by creating the gap by pulling over or coming off the gas ) when the are not able to do that often the emerging vehicle creates a problem because they are now expecting a gap to be made for them and I’ve seen many instances where accidents have happened in these circumstances.

The van emerging from the right at 7:30 made me smile. It was good to see him take the opportunity when presented, without having to be told. Earlier today I had something similar, but with so much more time and space ahead of me. A van from the right had emerged almost to the centre line, I slowed, a lot, but still he sat there. So I went on by. I guess he was waiting for me to make his decision for him - not going to happen.

Great video. One thing to look out for when letting cars out from the left, is to watch out for oncoming cars pulling in. Made that mistake a number of years back, but fortunately avoided collision by moving steadily (and to some degree of good fortune). This could apply to other situations as well. Don't forget general move-off checks. Some drivers, or even pedestrians will take advantage of your slow down for someone else, and not necessarily wisely. If your generosity hasn't been well planned with plenty of space, it will likely be better to just continue.

Ashley I would like to mention a situation I was involved in. I was about to turning right into a junction at an offset crossroads. I noticed a bus waiting to turn right out of the junction to my left, so I slowed ( I didn’t flash) so the bus knew I was going to wait for him to come out. Unfortunately he didn’t notice the car coming from the other direction and the young lady without attempted to stop drove into the bus. I parked up and both the bus and car driver tried to blame me for flashing. I explained I hadn’t flashed and it was the responsibility of the bus driver to make sure it was safe to leave the junction and the young lady should have also been aware. I have kept a copy of the Dashcam footage to send to the insurance companies if requested.

In regards to the flashing side of things, I never take it as an ‘it’s safe to go’ but instead ‘I’m giving you priority over me’ - after all, it’s still my responsibility to make sure it’s clear and safe to manoeuvre. If the ‘flasher’ is giving mixed signals (flashes but doesn’t slow, for example) then I’ll wait until all their signals match my expectation / interpretation, or they go past.

On the subject of taxi drivers, I have recently become one back in February. When I don't have passengers in I give way as much as I can. When there is passengers you have to be mindful, some people will pick up if you're constantly letting people out and will accuse you of taking the piss - our meters go up as "wait time", when we are stationary & it increases the fare. Obviously I know there are some poor taxi drivers and I've seen it first hand on many occasions. So just bare that in mind before you go slagging us all off - it aint always our fault :)

On the subject of flashing; I generally don't flash as I don't want to be liable if they go on to have a collision, but quite a few people will just stare at you and not go if you don't flash. It's not clear enough for them just to give space and almost halt in the road. On the subject of letting people out from side roads; I'm generally for it but there's a cross-roads near me followed by a side road and every day I see people going over the crossroads then stopping to let people out, causing a queue of traffic back across the crossing. It's bad because it's a tramline so you can end up stuck on the rails. The traffic lights only account for the amount of traffic they've let through, not the extra cars joining afterwards :/

At around 4:26 onwards, the clip with the white van overtaking the cyclist by straddling the double solid white centre lines along a straight stretch of road with good visibility. You comment that the van should not have done that. However, Highway Code rule 129 allows you to: “cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph (16km/h) or less.” I'm not sure whether in this case the cyclist was travelling at more than 10 mph but just to mention this "exception" rule. Great set of clips as always Ash. One added feature I feel would be useful (and I mentioned it before) is if you numbered each clip for easier reference, as long as it's not too much work for you.

@@ashley_nealYes I did wonder about that Ash and hence mentioned the cyclist potential speed in my posting. Speed aside, I somehow have a feeling that many drivers aren't aware of this " exception" rule. As you will be aware, it was introduced a few years ago. I'm pretty sure even that some drivers who overtake a cyclist moving at less than 10 mph may actually think they are " deliberately" breaking the law when in fact they're not. Similarly if another driver observes such a manuevre they may be thinking "Cor, look at that driver illegally crossing the solid white lines".

Hi Ash. Here's one I've come across for bad mentality. On the A38 near me, there's a short slip road which comes around a sharp corner. The vast majority of drivers I see absolutely tank it around the corner to gain speed to join but you can't make safe judgments at that speed. Then they indicate to pull out as if indicating gives them right of way and look shocked if you don't move into the outside lane or hold back. My approach is to plan ahead and let them join where safe but there have been times where I am being overtaken when they come tanking it around the bend pretty much level with me and so I've got nowhere to go and yet they assume they have right of way by indicating. Whenever I join at that slip road, I come around the corner much slower so that I can judge the traffic flow safely and any risk. Having an automatic gives kickdown so I sometimes use manual mode for smoother acceleration particularly in poor weather. Thanks 👍

A good tip is before you turn left at a junction onto a road think oncoming car overtaking on your side of the road. Don't think it's ok just to look right to see if it's clear & possibly you rolling it in 2nd gear not stopping properly at the junction just because it's perfectly clear to see to your right & not visibly clear to the left well before the you arrive at the junction. Stop dead at the junction and look properly left & right.

Sainburys publish a beware of cyclists message on the back of their trucks. That's the EASY low-cost thing that makes them look good. The real thing to do is not have drivers with tight schedules so that they can afford to take a wrong turn and work their way back on route, without having to scramble to make one in case it messes up their schedule. Also, better driver training helps. And encouraging civilian car drivers to send in bad examples of their drivers - which they would take action on. All this is miles better than a sign on the back of the Lorry. And I am a cyclist! My brother is a Lorry driver.

It's so nice to see nice driving videos without all the honking of horns and swearing like on other dash cam channels, I wish more cyclists acted like the ones in your video then there would be a better bike/ car relationship on the road.

That's a two-way street though. It has to be remembered also that many cyclists do not hold a driving licence for one reason or another. Accordingly, some really have no idea what it's like to drive a car. Conversely, these days many drivers have never ridden a bike or motorbike and that shows too.

4:15 Overtaking cyclists and crossing double white line lines used to be illegal years ago irrespective of other circumstances. It would appear that it is now within the law where it is safe, the road is clear and the cyclist is travelling at 10 mph or less. This guy is probably going faster than 10 mph pushing the van's move into the illegal category.

At 2.15 I'm not sure all drivers refuse to let the lorry out, some of course are like that, it could be more they dont think about the lorry in the lay by and how the lorry they are over taking would like to keep momentum and change lane. At 2.35, those left hand country roads, I'm considering the possibility of a pedestrian walking towards me. At 7.55 for me a reason not all the reasons but one of them is that if I let a vehicle out in front of me there is no likelihood of them barging out and causing me to either brake hard or even collide with them . I hope the taxi was thanked :)

With the flashing, I've had it both hinder and help me. I think it's very situational, somebody slowing and potentially letting you out but wondering if they have seen you or just slowing excessively for the traffic in front, a flash sometimes confirms they have seen you and are indeed allowing you through. Personally I give a wave of the hand if they can see me, however.

I wish i had my dash cam on, yesterday i was on a road, quite narrow and cars parked both sides, about 15 cars long, i could see there were 3 cars ahead coming towards me, so i puled into a side road to let the cars past, (i didn't flash) , just as i moved to the side, a car came speeding past me from behind, I said what the eff is he doing, but as he went past, the other cars moved off safely and waved at me to say thank you

4:20, is there not an exemption here for cyclists, tractors & other slow moving road traffic? Other than that, fantastic video, there are so many drivers out there who consider themselves to be good & competent simply because they look after themselves, not enough consider others & overall traffic flow.

Honest question from a driver that learned in another country - at 2:38 you say drivers should be 'able to stop in the distance you see as clear'. Shouldn't it be half that distance? It was something my instructor made sure I really understood (and it still relies on the other driver being able to do the same...)

4:25 More than 10mph? Highway Code rule 129 allows you to: “cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph (16km/h) or less" In saying that, the overtake looks a bit close to the bend but that could be perspective.

I would like to add, if it alls goes wrong, you could still be done for dangerous driving or driving without due care and attention. Just because it says you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it. Rule 129 gives us the ability to get past a hold up, but we need to be careful.

Yer highway code 129: You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

@@ashley_neal That's pretty difficult to determine from this clip. The cyclist is certainly not pedaling particularly fast or often, in fact he seems to start pedalling as the van starts his pass so could easily have been going closer to 10 as the van was approaching. I'd certainly not fault the van for that pass.
@kwlkid85
@kwlkid85 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashley_neal I also in general disagree with the highway code's 10mph limit, I think it's more about the difference in speed between the car and the cyclist which determines if an overtake is worthwhile and safe. For example basically everyone would overtake a cyclist over double lines on a national limit road if it was clear/safe to do so.

Can I correct you Ashley? At 2.40 “you should always be able to stop in half the distance you can see” as on narrow roads you both potentially need to be able to stop! Do you agree?

Hey Ashley, in the clip where the guy moves over for the bus and the bus keep going, do you think a lot of the issue is that most of us have never driven big vehicles so have no idea about the types or depth of blind spots they have? I know for certain I would of used the logic of if I can see his mirrors he can see me which is plastered over the back of HGV on British roads?

4:29 but you are allowed to cross this lines when cyclist traveling less than 10mph (you should point out bend more than lines I think as people may understand you can't overtake cyclist at all on double white lines )
