On behalf of all the cyclists, drivers doing things like in #15 are really appreciated, especially on a wet potholed lane like that where staying in the middle of the road is paramount to staying upright! Not all riders will realise what you are doing to help but we thank you!

Absolutely, but unfortunately it's rare as rocking horse poop., the number of times I'm out and there are passing places and motorists just will not pull into them and then come past you so damn close, this is why primary position is important, not just to see further up the road but to dissuade motorists from driving hell for leather on narrow lanes. In fact when I do drive the missuses VW Fox it's almost the same thing, particularly when the other motorist has a significantly bigger machine.

@@ynotnilknarf39 I'm a cyclist and a driver. I totally agree! Get this a lot where I live. More often than not it is the normal "you are in the wrong" German car culprits that help out in my area. @@collynkieranmclaughlan6983 @ynotnilknarf39 I certainly don't disagree with yourselves and I find it really dangerous and irritating how other road users treat cyclists on roads like this. I just think that every once in a while we can step back and be thankful for the few who do make an effort😊

As a driver and cyclist, I try to think from both perspectives when I'm on the road. Driving on the road like in #15 one of my thoughts would be "what if there is a cyclist or pedestrian behind the bend?". I adjust speed being ready. As a cyclist, if I see a stream of cars behind me I usually look for a place to stop and let them all pass (it won't kill me to pause for a few seconds). I do what the driver in #15 did as well when I see cyclists coming my way and there is not enough room for the cyclist to feel safe. Again, stopping for a few seconds won't kill me either, but what's more important it won't kill that cyclist. As a cyclist, I always signal (and it is so annoying trying to guess what a cyclist on the road will do) and look behind. I learned that establishing eye contact with a driver behind me makes both parties more comfortable. As a driver, I would like the cyclist to show me, he's aware I'm there so we can safely proceed with our manouvers. Many cyclists don't realize that overtaking somebody on a bike can be a stressful experience. We use roads together, we should learn to cooperate. Although, I don't know if I would develop these habits if I wasn't both a cyclist and a driver :)

You learn with country road driving to take corners wide so you can see around them further, but always be ready to pull back in if there's a vehicle or something. It's also worth remembering that on blind corners there may be a cyclist, sheep, cow, whatever on the inside of the car corner hidden by the hedge. Always be ready to stop if you can't see the road ahead. (Yet somehow people fly around those corners like crazy people still!)

Where it's calm voice "hey man its a one way no worry I made the same mistake" and moving on instead of shouting and flashing his beams. Fixing mistakes even if its not your fault and keeping as calm as possible. And just making the roads that slight bit safer. As said this video may be a year old. But god damn it was beautiful to watch and Kudos to all the drivers in this video who kept calm and made the road a safer place.

"It's not what you say, it's how you go about saying it" Thisthisthisthis! So often on the road, problems arise and tempers flare simply because of how people speak to eachother. A simple "it's a one way street, I've made this mistake myself" is much better than rolling down your windows screaming obscenities and calling the other driver names. If everyone could keep so calm and collected I think the roads would be safer.

I think it says it all that there's a tendency to assume the worst when someone wants a word. Understandable because, often, it's irate. But I've seen a situation of the car behind flashing lights and honking etc, pull over, "the hell's your problem?" ... "I just thought you might want to know your brake light's stuck on" (I can't remember the exact issue but something like that).. "oh! s**t sorry, thanks mate"

I applaud the driver for how he handled this situation. I am a new driver and I recently went down a one way street the wrong way (long story short - I was going to a car park, didn’t know the area, my satnav said turn left so I did upon seeing a car park, and entered a one way street the wrong way), as I was driving up the wrong way street, I saw other cars driving the other way, I thought “oh Christ am I going down a one way street the opposite way” but as I had this realisation, a car pulled up beside me and said “it’s a one way street”, I said I didn’t know the area and I apologised and he started shouting at me saying “I should know” (also to add I have P plates on my car to inform other drivers I will make mistakes). I completely owned up to my mistake but how the other driver handled the situation made me extremely upset as I’d hate to upset anyone in any way, and this was 5 minutes before my job interview so you can imagine I was crying right before (maybe I need a tougher skin but because of how aggressive drivers upset me, I am always polite and considerate to other drivers). If people make a mistake fair enough to tell them but other drivers have no excuses for being aggressive or yelling at someone or whatever. It’s horrendous how other drivers treat others on the road. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind
@anglaismoyen
@anglaismoyen 2 жыл бұрын
The worst is honking though. I can be calm right until someone honks, because that's like a loud, mechanised "f*** you". I agree though, and I wish honking didn't trigger me so much.

I try to so hard to drive like this...but I've only been doing it for a year, and it's tough. I find myself trying to anticipate situations and it doesn't go the way I expect and end up coming off looking like a bit of an idiot! hahaha. You have to be constantly switched on and aware. it's so easy to zone out and just become a bit robotic on the roads. This will seem a bit weird, but maybe a video on maintaining concentration might be good - like, do you play mind games with yourself to keep yourself aware? Do you chew gum? What are your strategies?
@georgecromar4094
@georgecromar4094 3 жыл бұрын
Techniques like looking or creating situations where you don't need to signal or practicing acceleration sense help us with concentration. But may be you're not planning fully in the beginning. You shd consider joining a ROSPA/IAM group. They help us with stuff like tht and it is mostly the advice that Ashley is offering in these videos.

Hi Michael. A couple of great suggestions already here. However, Do you give yourself a constant running commentary, either out loud if it helps or, just an internal monologue if that’s easier? Call out all the road signs and markings and what it might mean for you. Call out the mirror checks and speed adjustments based on what you’re seeing and do the same with the regular mirror checks you’re doing every few seconds. What are the people behind, in front and at junctions joining your road doing. Does it match what they should be doing, what will your response be if not. Essentially, all you can do will be to slow down a little, or a lot. Stop, in a good place and be ready to move again soon as you can or keep going at an already slightly lower speed as the problem clears ahead. Always working to keep space around your vehicle. You could try a commentary on the clips shown here or elsewhere. Have you watched Ashley’s ‘how to drive like a driving instructor’ series yet? Reg Local, also on KZbin is an ‘advanced driver trainer’ and, in my opinion, has a great commentary style. Please keep up the good work though. Slowly but surely we can make a difference!
@MrFluteboy1980
@MrFluteboy1980 3 жыл бұрын
@@ianhares9476 I have watched his instructor series. I really enjoy the commentary and there are some great lessons in there. His most recent one on signalling I think was the most important one he's done in ages. It encompassed not just signalling bit everything from position in lane, to speed, braking. It was a bit eye opening (but at the same time, so obvious) to realise how much every signal you are showing, consciously or not, impacts on everyone around you. I like the commentary idea. Sometimes I drive and talk myself through situations with the radio off. When I'm driving my partner though, it's more challenging to do that because talkimg to myself as if I'm alone with her in the car is a little bit weird!! Haha

I came across exactly the same situation a few years ago. The cyclist was approaching from my left on a steep hill. I estimate he was doing over 20 MPH. I could see that no way was he going to be able to stop to give way to me. So like Will I slowed to allow the cyclist to pass in front of me. Suddenly the cyclist shouted loads of abuse because, unbeknown to me, it was his plan to whip behind me as I passed. He suddenly moved into the middle of the road at exactly at the same time as I prepared to give way to him. I was very upset about the abuse. I could hear him still swearing from several metres away. He had no idea of the dangerous situation he had created that he blamed on me.

I couldn't creep forward to see to the left because roadworks were immediately in front. 🙃 I considered reversing a bit so they could see at least, but just as I was going to do so, they turned anyway. I agree re the first cyclist clip, we all make mistakes, it wasn't the worst thing in the world and at least they acknowledged their error and pulled up so as not to exacerbate things, but I'd probably think I'd rather have the motorist in front given I might have peed them off. As much as the lorry driver wasn't right up the back, it's still intimidating for many even at that distance, ATEOTD we shouldn't have to feel we have to 'get out the way' and if the situation makes anyone feel intimidated/pressured then it's the environment/road set up and other road users that are making you feel that way, plus of course past experience of far too many doing it all very wrong.

It's nice to see these examples of good driving rather than having a constant diet of crash, bang wallop clips. If everyone could drive like this it would be great. It is also amazing how driving like this sometimes confuses other drivers, who can't understand why you are not barrelling along at or above the speed limit, regardless of conditions or potential hazards 🙄 The van overtaking the HGV and bike on solid whites was a prime example.

Ashley, It's nice to see you pointing out all of these correct road situations that are doing such good for all of us drivers that really care.The sad thing is that there seem's to be more of the impatient & recless type these day's & it's only getting worse.I am talking about the ones that become absolute monsters when they get into their cars.I had a grype about cyclists riding on the pavement ,until i last rode my bike on the road,which was about a year ago.There are far to many Iresponsible drivers now.

I love these vids. I'm a delivery driver myself so see all these situations, time after time, especially the country lanes in Wales and Shropshire. I'll have to invest in a dash cam and share great stuff people do and unfortunately the bad. Always looking to improve my own driving at the same time too. The ability to remain chilled like, Ashley after so many near misses, day in, day out is one I hope to achieve but it's difficult when these fools risk you not going back home to your family that evening.

A great tip I was given for country lanes by a police instructor (I was on the "you done fucked up course")...if your view of the road is closing you're going too fast, if view remains the same you are at max appropriate speed, if your view is opening, you can speed up (with caution obviously) It's the method he teaches for rapid response driving but transfers really well especially on lanes you don't know. I'm sure Ashley knows this method, I may not have explained it well...would be great if he could do a little demo of what I'm rambling on about.

I've generally considered speed on country lanes as safe if you can stop in half the distance you can see. I'm not sure if that's a rule or where I've picked it up from, but it seems sensible to me.

And not do the speed down a hill that a young woman in a Volvo towing a horse box containing two ponies did when she saw a bus coming the other way. Though there was a fair distance between her and the bus, it was still not enough to stop, especially as it had been raining. A curious feeling sitting in a bus watching a vehicle coming towards you for several seconds and knowing it will not stop in time. Ever seen how fast a bus driver can jump out of his seat and run down a bus.

Thank you, Ashley! John is the antithesis of the aggressive cammers that we mostly see on KZbin! I have been driving for fifty five years so I am no 'Boy Racer' but I still like to 'take chance' on speed limits, i.e. +10% +2mph (GPS Speed!), even occasionally >60mph on country roads but mostly 30 - 50mph according to conditions. On congested motorways / dual carriageways I have 'brake checked' a tailgater but without reducing my speed, a quick dab on the brake pedal with my left foot usually reminds them that they are too close and I also would like to be doing 70+mph. I refuse to give way to vehicles (usually 'white vans) that aggressively threaten my low value '07 Clio but if they signal their need and wait patiently I will hold back and let them into my lane whatever they are driving, from a rusty old Transit to a Bentley. I will continue to heed Ashley's wise words and hope to become a better driver! OTOH, careful, considerate driving during this C19 crisis is even more important than ever. Even a minor incident could involve recovery services, a serious incident rescue services, both involving more miles on the road and therefore a greater chance of further accidents. A major RTC will increase the workload of our already busy Ambulance Service and hospitals.

Clip #4 (visibility) reminds me of a somewhat different situation.I was turning right onto the A2 from Shepherdswell, before there were lights at that junction. I pull out into the gap in the central reservation. The guy behind me pulls out into the same gap, on my left, so I can't see what's coming on the dual carriageway, then waits for me to go.

1:50 I applaud the driver for how he handled this situation.

100% more aware. I am slowly learning from patterns on how to see if something is about to happen. Obviously, not the biggest necessity but it helps at the end of the day. Just yesterday I had to tell my Dad to slow down because that biker was about to pull out in front of him. He has 30+ years as a driver so he knew anyway. At the end of the day it all comes naturally. Currently still learning to drive but remember this. If you're from the UK that 99% of electric scooters have no respect for road users. Since those things have come out more than 7 times in my 12 hours of driving. Hope you pass mate!

The thing is with driving is that we ALL make mistakes sometimes! However, these mistakes are not helped by other drivers going full-tilt Mr (or Mrs, Miss etc) Angry, sounding the horn, accelerating towards the problems and swearing out of the window! If more drivers were like these examples then the roads would be a nicer place to drive! 🙂
