Nice Guys and Chads in Ice by Anna Kavan

In this video, I discuss Ice by Anna Kavan the narrator's desire to love and protect a woman who is with a possessive, abusive man (or men?) named the warden. I also discuss 1st person narration, slipstream fiction, and the perception that women need to be protected and how this can be possessive and objectifying.
I read this a few months ago during quarantine, but I was delighted to see it mentioned in Charlie Kaufman's latest film on Netflix, I'm Thinking of Ending Things.

I enjoyed your thoughts about *_Ice_* . I read it long ago without putting as much thought into it as you have. For me, the chaotic story was a difficult read, but at the same time I couldn't put it down. It has stuck with me through all the decades, gnawing away at my subconscious. If someone wants something different to read, I suggest *_Ice_* .

I forget if I mentioned it in this video or the one about the film, but I saw the film, haven’t read the book. I think the feminist themes are distantly similar but ice is more about possessive men and I’m thinking of Ending things is more about idealizing women, in my opinion.
