Regarding that sincere wholesome ending, I think that's very important in comedy: No matter how many jokes you cram in, you can't make a joke out of everything. Fun Fact, movies like Space Balls, Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Academy, Hot Shots!, etc. are categorized as "Dead Pan" movies. Or "Dead Pan Humor", usually characterised by doing silly/dumb things, while treating it seriously. I absolutely love those types of movies, and am very sad that the "genre" faded out in time.

I honestly can't get enough of this movie and I've been watching it any chance I got since I was a child and it came out. But even as funny as the movie is....... I've watched quite a few reactions to this movie and the two of you got almost all of the references to older movies in this. The guy making noises with his mouth is Michael Winslow and in Police Academy he played a police recruit that could make almost any noise imaginable. In Spaceball city the twins chewing gum was a reference to the Doublemint Twins gum commercials from the 80s.

It's really subtle and easy to miss, but the radar scene when the camera is coming in close you can see Col. Sanders standing next to Dark Helmet notices it's going to hit them and his eyes go wide, he makes a face like "Oh shit" and backs away out of the sbot. That scene and the "Keep firing assholes!" scene are the two best in the film.
@sabinebruhns66322 жыл бұрын
During the scene, where the beaming goes wrong, you see the "beaming engineer" with a strange looking hat. That is part of a scotish traditional clothing - to go for "Beam me up, Scotie". As you said, in every scene there is a ton of jokes and references. You can watch the movie over and over again and it never gets boring.

@6:50 They didn't just get the actor for that scene. He did ALL of the sound effects for the movie. @12:34 the scene with the guy showing "We ain't found S***", that's Tim Russ, aka Tuvok, saying that. @18:32 if you had shown the entire outside of the diner, you would see the Millennium Falcon parked there. This is the second of my favorite Mel Brooks movies ever, the other one is "The Producers". There is a very subtle connection between them (other than Mel himself of course); the person initiating the transformation, or metamorphosis, from Spaceball One to Megamaid is named Kafka. The real Franz Kafka wrote a book called "The Metamorphosis" in which Gregor Samsa turns into a giant insect. In the "The Producers" movie the script for a musical which started with those words was deemed too good to not be a flop. And Spaceballs was made 20 years later.

I saw this when it was in theaters with my dad... we LOVED the commercials that featured the "Moichendizing" bit... and my dad was a huge Brooks fan.. which is why I was shocked that, while I was enjoying it, he was flat out board. It didnt work for him.. and I kinda get it. Brooks' 70s movies were on another level.. I think this one lacked some of the subtler wit of those films. Theres still a lot to like though. And now that star wars is so much more than 3 films this maybe resonates more these days.
