Nick Kyrgios admits he wanted to hit Rafael Nadal ‘square in the chest’ | 2019 Wimbledon Presser

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios gave a typically combative press conference following his 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 defeat to Spain’s Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in London, England. Kyrgios admitted he was aiming for Nadal’s chest and said ‘why should he apologise’ for it and that he ‘didn’t care.’ He also chimed on his compatriot Bernard Tomic getting fined $56,000 for not playing up to the “required professional standards” and said that decision was simply ‘outrageous.’

Pretty sure he plays the way he does (“cool” and nonchalant) because he’s afraid to lose while actually trying. When he plays the way he does, he can always have the excuse of “I wasn’t even trying” whenever he loses to ease himself. But when he loses while actually trying, it’ll be a dagger to his huge ego. Obviously, we know he’ll never have the mindset or play-style of a champion.

So Kyrgios wants to bring a little in your face thug aspect to the game. He's obviously envious of Nadal, and Nadal is professional enough to deflect the shot and not get down in the dirt with Kyrgios. Kyrgios complains about Nadal's bank account and the referee? This is all Kyrgios' problem and he should know how to deal with these issues by now. Rule #1 in any sport is not to tick off the referee or show disrespect toward them before the match even starts. Most referees are professional enough to not let this cloud their judgement, but even unconscious feelings can indirectly influence calls. Pros know this.

He is jealous on Nadal's achievements (Roger's, Novak's) but he doesn't want to admit it to himself. He often criticized the treatment that these player have on GS tournaments, especially Rafa and Novak, but the thing is that he is so jealous and aware that he will never be such a great tennis player. He has talent, but that is only one component needed to become a great player. Roger, Rafa, Novak, beside their talent are all emotionally stable players, focused, determined, hardworking etc. If Nick played in some other tennis era he could maybe win few big tournaments. I compare him to Marat Safin, who was also great talent wasted, but who still managed to win few Slams in this short period after Sampras retired and before Roger emerged.

If he comes in to net and can't react fast enough or has charged in off a iffy shot, there's 4 ways to beat him , to the left, to the right, lob, or straight through him. I never understood why people would get angry if I went straight through them. Get back if you can't handle the pace at net.
@johnbcollier
@johnbcollier 5 жыл бұрын
A rocket straight at the body is a perfectly legitimate shot. Like he said, Rafa is one of the best players in the world. If he can't take a fast shot to the body, he shouldn't come to the net. And for all of those people who say Krygios is going nowhere, he is a professional tennis player traveling the world, making millions of dollars, and having fun. Does he have the potential to perform at a much higher at tennis? Of course. But should he? Maybe he doesn't want to give up his lifestyle to be the best, at least not for now. How is that so offensive? Why should he adopt the world's expectations for his life? Nick is authentic and incredibly entertaining to watch.

What he’s saying is that he knows that he has talent, which he does, but he doesn’t want tennis to be the only thing in his life like it is for those winning slams. He went to the pub the night before because tennis is just a game to him and he doesn’t want to dedicate all of his time to that game. If he ever changes his mind and does want to train and focus more on tennis to try and win slams then that should be his choice and he should not be pressurised into it by the media and the public.
