There used to be more diversity in horse race ownership. Nowadays, we see the same 10-15 owners/syndicates entered in all the big races.

Every year these days the majority of above average three year olds are retired to stud. In the meantime there are about half the number of foals born each year than were born in 2000. Field sizes are pathetically small in many races, especially stake races. People don't want to bet 5 horse fields especially when one trainer could have 2 or 3 of them. Not just Baffert, you see it with Brown and Pletcher sometimes and with Brad Cox. So the product is less attractive, the stars disappear before they are 4 and only a few of them produce many good horses. Now tracks are disappearing so the fans that will go to the track don't have a track nearby. Need to get more horses into each race. Need more good horses running at each track to develop fan favorites. At the end of the day need more owners with deep pockets who will run a good horse when they are 4 or even 5 and need more breeders who wll breed more horses. America always had a lot of horse lovers who happened to be wealthy and could support the sport. People can't bet horses who are not there. Soon the sport won't be there if something big doesn't get done.

Also need more wealthy people interested.....I see majority of the people most interested today can't afford the shirt on their back in a sport of billionaires who are interested in the status que. You are right, we need more horses, but horses that are bred to run, not bred to go to stud and cover 200+ mares a year to produce nothing burger mediocre genetically inferior progeny and then by the time the horse is like 15 they have a heart attack and die because you are over breeding them to death. I don't hate the commercial breeders but I do extremely dislike them because they are not breeding commercial horses, they want to breed patrician stable quality horses and then throw them into a commercial market.....that is clearly not good genetics....and it shows with the current capabilities of the breed today vs yesteryear, they are not running any faster than they were 50 years ago but they are certainly not capable of anywhere near the same stamina or soundness as they used to be....the breeding is the first and foremost biggest issue, it is pathetic when horses just a generation ago could run 30 races on average as a 2 year old and now today, they complain you run a horse more than 5 times a freakin year...because the horses are genetically weak and can't handle it. You are going to have to get tighter on how and what you breed, and the commercial breeders HATE that idea, since they have been strangling the sport for literally the last 100 years.

This is the same individual who not that long ago was going to start his own BC because he thought NYRA had been shunned only to find out that NYRA had not sought it. I only hope his horses do not get contaminated by the heart rate meds he surely is taking.
