In this video I talk about my recent excursion to Manchester to see Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets and their early Floyd show, and also chew the fat a little on the pre-Dark Side Floyd.

Quick correction: Contrary to what I said in this video, the band did NOT perform Careful with that Axe Eugene. The tune I was thinking of was in fact 'Saucerful of Secrets' itself!! Thanks to the guitarist Lee Harris for pointing that out!

Hi James, great video. Really enjoyed hearing your reflections about the show. Its incredible how some of these musical legends appear to be forever young. They truly love what they do which makes us all more fortunate.

Cheers James. Pleased you enjoyed our show! Couple of things. Nick was actually 80 years young back in January. We didn’t play Careful With That Axe. It was Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun which closed the first set. Thanks again! L

Hi Lee, a lovely surprise to read your comment, thanks! Did you not do Careful With that Axe as part of the encore? If not, I must have hallucinated it! Hope the tour is going well.

@@jamesgriffithsmusic no. We obviously took you on a mad journey! We’ve never played it. Not enough enthusiasm amongst us for that one.

What was the instrumental tune you did at the end, before (or after ) One of These Days?

Hi Wow ......... your talking about your emotions during the concert gave me goosebumps. These years are my favourite Pink Floyd ones. I bought the Royndhouse vinyl and bluray when it was released. It's just superb. I know for sure I would have shed some tears at that gig. Music gets under your skin, and that's the best thing about music. I cried at a Paul McCartney concert and at an Eric Clapton concert. I think it's, like I said, the best thing about music. Take care.

Sounds like quite the rousing and emotional evening! Interesting to experience a change of perspective on the earlier Barrett material and how great to see the original drum set brought out. Got to catch these legends while we still can. Have a nice weekend, cheers!

I'm very much aware that there are some huge legends (Bob Dylan the main one) that I've left it very late to see. I keep wandering about seeing McCartney one more time (last time was in 1991), but his voice is shot and the tickets are so expensive! Thanks Doug.

Hi James, I'd have loved to have been at that gig. I bought their album a few months after it came out with an element of trepidation, but I loved it. For me 1968-71 was Floyd's peak period both in the studio and especially live when they were at their most experimental. And Nick was such an important part of their sound, a superb drummer. BTW the only time I ever saw Floyd was at that Maine Road gig - don't remember seeing you there 😁. All the best... Pete

Hi Pete! Wow, so you were at Maine Road too. There's another guy on the VC called Mark Hesford (don't think he's still doing videos actually) who was also there. It was my first ever concert, what a night! Thanks for dropping in, sorry I haven't looked in on you for some time but I've been really out of the loop for the last few months or so, for one reason or another. Will try and get my act together soon.

Nick Mason always seemed the most relaxed, least truculent / brittle of the Floyd members. Lovely that he's doing this project and thumbs up to Gary Kemp for being involved. I'm trying to imagine what Spandau Ballet would have sounded with some psychedelic influences 😂

Thanks John. I was just thinking tonight that Nick Mason now reminds me quite a bit of Cleggy (Peter Sallis) from Last of the Summer Wine! Gary Kemp was a surprisingly good fit for the early Floyd sound.

Hi James I know a couple of people who have seen this band perform and were highly impressed. You know how much I love Meddle, particularly Echoes, so glad that was a highlight for you. I will keep an eye out if they tour again for sure. ..Seems apt you doing this video in a pastoral garden setting with birds twittering..how very Grandchester Meadows. Gary Kemp doing psychedelia..who'd have thunk it!.

Ha, ha yes, Gary Kemp actually make a funny remark during the show about the weirdness of him being there, but he did a fantastic job. You must go and see the show next time around Rob, you'll love it.

Glad the show was so good - sometimes its weird to be a cover band with a member of the band - Jon Anderson is doing that right now, but I heard that was also a great show. Nothing wrong with any of it
