Hi James, really cool to get the Robin Gibb solo album. The only one I have on vinyl is Robin's Reign, the one that was released around the time of Cucumber Castle. Those Bee Gees "wilderness" years are very underrated especially the excellent Life in a Tin Can. If you don't have it, snap it up if you see it.

Mold is perhaps an unfortunately named place in which to hold a record fair! Apart from Head Hunters I'm missing all those 70's fusion Herbie Hancock records. Really unpardonable and something I ought to correct one of these days. I have never seen that Billy Preston and wasn't aware he had done My Sweet Lord before George. Still think poor George got shafted in that lawsuit, I don't hear any great similarity between it and the Chiffons song he was found to have subconsciously plagiarized. Nowadays whole songs get ripped off (so blatantly I can't even call it "sampling") and no one seems to care. Never heard Robot, curiosity piqued. Nice to find Cucumber Castle, missing that one - in my early days collecting vinyl again I thrifted Trafalgar and Odessa (not an original with the velvet cover however), gosh I must revisit those. Got the Brian Wilson on CD - deep in the Dr. Landy period there. He is not doing too well, health wise, the last I heard. Great haul!
@jamesgriffithsmusic4 күн бұрын
Thanks Doug! Ha yes, I hadn't spotted the irony of buying records in Mold! I recently picked up Head Hunters but it hasn't been through the cleaner yet. Funnily enough, 'Robot' by Robin Gibb has a bit of a cod-reggae vibe to it!

Hiya James, Firstly great you met up with Sean he is a lovely guy he was at leeds earlier in the year as you know i hope the gap until the next meet up isn't as long as the last. I know there's a much maligned Andy Gibb solo disco album people joke about i liked 'you win again' at the time I'm not familiar with their output much outside of Saturday night fever tbh. Specials is a great album. I've slowed down record buying and not sold at a fair for about a year now but I've things in the pipeline and have been sitting down listening to alot more music whether at home or driving about with work. Cheers Martin.

First off. I am not one of the ones that would smirk when I see Bee Gees or Bee Gees related records shown. I was very happy to see you showing some of Brian's solo work. I am a longtime fan of the Beach Boys since I was a kid. In fact it was my first full length outdoor concert at 15 years old in 1975. I did have a tougher time with most of his solo albums excluding Smile and the album you are showing. I kind of feel that Dr Landy messed up his genius. But I still love him. <> Some great R&B/funk records. That Stevie LP has a lot of synths. I thought that it was really enjoyable. Wonderful update James. Did you get to see Squeeze on this current tour? I may catch them in Sept at the Wang Center with Boy George~ Rob/Boston

Nice that you got to meet up with Sean. I loved the way you said A Message To You, Rudy, in the way they sing it in the song by using an up inflection on the final syllable. I think I'd find it hard to say it with a down inflection, despite that's how I'd say Rudy in any other context.

Might just well be my fav Stevie LP. I heard Superwoman on KTel Superbad comp in the mid 70s as a kid and it just is part of my DNA.... all those Rhodes and Arps/Moogs really impacted me as I am surrounded by them to this day. Also have the Herbie, my Thrust from 1974 isn't a gatefold...neither is Headhunters, Secrets nor Sunlight so not sure he had any of his funky LPs in any gatefold releases..

Hi Neil. Yeah, MOFM gets a bit overlooked I think as it was the first one in that great run of Stevie albums. I really must do a collection video now I've got the set (or does Secret Life of Plants count as one of the classic ones? I don't have that yet!). Thanks for the info on Thrust. Hi James. Fantastic Stevie record. “Superwoman” is probably my favourite Stevie track. And the Stevie track on the Herbie album is also a treat. He was everywhere in the 70’s, and that could only be a good thing! Check out the album before that famous run of albums, “Where I’m Coming From”. It’s an overlooked gem. I always think of it being the start of his purple patch. Man, those records are good.
@jamesgriffithsmusic4 күн бұрын
Thanks John. I remember you talking about 'Where I'm Coming From' in a video you did a while back. I forgot to mention that Stevie is also on the Herbie record. Funnily enough I hadn't checked the liner notes before spinning the record, but I recognised it was Stevie from the first note he played. He's like Bob Dylan on the harmonica in a way, you can tell it's him immediately.

ahhh the funk groove going. nice. Stevie was touring for a year, then MusicOMMind came out, then he toured with the Stones in 72' summer. There was a falling out with his Drummer on the tour, as Stevie took away some solo drumming time and that pissed off his drummer. That is when Ollie Brown came in to pick up the tour. Wales is on my bucket list, wished you showed some footage of the show there. cheer
@jamesgriffithsmusic4 күн бұрын
Hi Steve! I didn't get any footage of the show as it was so small and there was hardly any elbow room. Hope you get to see Wales one day - Snowdonia is where you need to head (north-West-inland), but the north-west coast is also beautiful. We just got back from Llandudno which is an essential place to go if you're visiting Wales - a classic Victorian seaside resort. Just don't eat fish and chips on the prom though, or the seagulls will attack you.

I think Surfs' Up is a fabulous Beach Boys album, and for me their last classic record..of course being the early 70s Brian Wilson was no longer the sole creative writer and Al, Mike etc were chipping in ideas, but for me theres' still that transcendent vibe and coherence with the songs. I was never a particular fan either of The Final Cut, but agree that 'Two Suns In The Sunset' is a very poignant ballad..Waters clearly like it too as he apparently kept it in his live set for years afterwards. Funnily enough I was listening to ' The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking ' yesterday for the first time in many years and surprised myself with regard to how much of an immersive experience I found it..Claptons' guitar is superb and actually makes the record as good as it is...gritty and visceral as per usual for a Waters record, but so much more enjoyable than either of the 2 Floyd albums thst came before it. Stuart Copeland wrote some great songs for The Police, I love his quirky sense of humour too, particularly on songs like ' Does Everyone Stare' from Regatta de Blanc..really odd chord changes and time signatures..it almost swings, but not quite. I try to like early 80s Robert Plant and I think Big Log is a decent song, (particularly the key change on the refrain) but the production is horrible and for me takes it into Chris Rea territory..about as far removed from Zeppelin as you can get. I really must get a copy of that Squeeze album sometime. Another interesting video theme James..hope you're enjoying the summer weather.. All the best Rob.
@jamesgriffithsmusic4 күн бұрын
Thanks for the detailed comment Rob! Tbh I've always really struggled with the Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking. In fact, last time I listened to it, I decided it was possibly the worst record in my collection! I'll have to go back and give it another go. I know what you mean about the eighties production on 'Big Log' but I can forgive it. Apart from the horrendous 'snare drum', I think it's actually quite restrained, particularly when compared to some of the terrible production on his next album 'Shaken'n'Stirred' - another contender for 'worst record in my collection'!

The 80's were not always kind to icons of the 60's and 70's. I've often pondered on how and why the same talented human beings who created works of genius early in their careers seem to struggle creatively in later years. Maybe they were better off keeping things low key and honest and not trying to stay abreast of changing fashions and trends. A lot of factors come into play I suppose - was watching The Last Waltz recently, a work of brilliance on every level but then you read about these horrible drug addictions they were going through at the same time. The Beach Boys' 70's albums are patchy, but beautifully so in an odd way - with these little gems mixed in with the addled or uninspired moments. Big Log, evocative and mysterious for sure - still no clue what it's on about, but bloody hell it sounded cool then, and still does. Cheers James!
@jamesgriffithsmusic8 күн бұрын
When you think about it, there's no reason why inspiration should be endlessly forthcoming. There's a great quote from Robyn Hitchcock about Syd Barrett, where he said something like, 'Syd squeezed his talent out of a tube really quickly and loved all the pretty colours so much he just squeezed it all out in one go then realised the tube was empty'. Ashamed to say I've still never seen The Last Waltz or listened to the album!

Empire Burlesque is my least fave Dylan album or at least with Self Portrait. Can't think of any good songs on it. McCartney II is also a weak album. I think it had couple of good songs on it, but it's the sound of the album especially that i don't like. I prefer the last two Police albums though i would say my fave is Regatta. Sweets From a Stranger is def. among my top 3 Squeeze albums. Black And Blue has grown on me over the years, really like it even though it does have the puzzle feel to it being collection of songs rather than cohesive record. The camera is very sensitive to sound so it makes your garden sound like a noisy place where you wouldn't want to really hang out. I've noticed this especially on videos where there's a wind going on. Pasi

I can't really think of any. Effectively, it amounts to the last track being the best one in some ways, which might infer poor sequencing. A famous example of this might be Japan's Quiet Life, but even there, it doesn't end with the strongest track. The best I can come up with is Aztec Camera's Knife album, but even that might be debatable. I'm sure there are other examples, but it's a tough one.
