From someone who had never played the franchise and wanted to know a bit more: It felt a bit too much like all the reviews of all games glued together, and a few of them dragged for too long. It's the first time ever i wanted to fast forward in one of your videos, which is extremely surprising. Also, the historical and contextual information about the game's development or impact were not that strong or insider-y as other cases. Maybe this franchise doesn't have the most exciting history ever or not that much is known but... I'd shift the balance again towards this second angle.

In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, when Lambert said "You can't get a medal for this", and Sam said "Medals don't help me sleep at night Lambert", it showed that Sam cares more about people and partially the mission than medals. I really like that line.
@jericho1-4 Жыл бұрын
I played Chaos theory on a few different ports and if memory serves me right on the PS2 version the only way to get that coveted hundred% was to save the pilots, where as in the Xbox and PC port it didn't matter and was solely a personal juice without award or demerit for saving/not saving them. Pretty sure it was the same with the assassination of Dallas Tahl in Pandora Tommorow which I first played on Xbox then PS 2, where the Xbox version held no sway but the in the PS2 version if you didn't kill her you got at best 99% depending on how well you finished the mission. That's something I actually like about titles being on multiple ports, depending on which one you play the game can be mildly to wildly different in not only game play but content though can and does get pricey lol. Sometimes it's worth it other times not so much.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist remains one of my absolute favorite games and I miss it. I wish there was more!
@shamusbob79694 ай бұрын
I downloaded a mod that makes the firearms all more realistic with one hit kills and a heavier lethality, and omg it breaths so much new life into the game that I got addicted to playing it and actually preferred playing this version of Blacklist so much that I wonder why it wasn't built from the ground up to be this way, I figured they figured it'd be "too easy" but they could easily fix this by making your health system and stealth just as unforgiving, but yeah, using a makarov and taking soldiers down with one or two shots to the chest is so satisfying, and 3 of them oblivious to your presence suddenly being mowed down with you emptying your 8 rounds from your Makarov is so realistic and cinematic feeling, the loud sound design is so much fun, and of course, now going loud and killing a platoon sized group of enemies is much more attractive. I found the default "6 body shots to take one standard guard down" and "Every pistol besides the final upgraded one being nerfed" always forced you to play the game one way and that was the slasher-movie stealth "wait in cover/shadows and melee or gadget takedown the enemies" and using your silencer-only weapons was just a gameplay loop that got boring fast, since the game wasn't Chaos Theory, where it was designed to be played this way but also with incredible mission design and unforgiving consequences to "going loud". Now with this "realistic firearms" mod (I think it's something that like that, if you go to Nexus page on blacklist, it's one of the few mods that exist for the game) it completely breaths new life into the game and make you want to actually go loud, and mixing it up now feels fun and energized, stealth feels less restrictive since your weapons don't need to rely on headshots, although enemy armor and helmets are still effective, you still feel like a badass putting your AK74U on single fire only and mowing down 20 guards who are trying to out flank you. I fucking love this mod and it makes me not even wanna go back to the old way of playing Blacklist. Highly recommend playing it, it's a simple drag and drop into the default folder I believe and works fine with ubisoft connect I believe.

100% agree with this, specially now that MGS is done and Dishonored is on (I hope) a temporary hiatus, only Hitman and Deus Ex (although not so well as of late) are left to carry the torch for triple A stealth driven experiences. Sure there are great stealth hybrids, like Ghost Recon Wildlands that merge stealth and action gameplay well enough that it creates an interesting dynamic between the two. There just aren't enough fully stealth driven games anymore, and this trend could potentially mean now would be the perfect timing to reboot the franchise. I wish Ubisoft could pull a reboot as great as the one Santa Monica did with God of War, a boy can dream... BOY! My favourites were the very first Splinter Cell game and Conviction. I feel like I'm the only person who actually really liked the monochrome effect to show when you were in the shadows in Conviction. Although I loved the original night vision goggles too, once I had played Conviction I actually found it hard to readjust to the green and fuzzy vision in the first game. Great video for a great franchise!

Fantastic doc, Nick, huge congrats. Really well-integrated commentary and visuals, not as easy as it looks and the quality of the writing is high. I've played through all the PC iterations except Double Agent and loved them all, wasting many hours in map recon to compete effectively in Chaos Theory's Spy vs Merc mode. I am even considering re-installing Blacklist, which I enjoyed but found that the scripted missions, such as the final face-off with the villain were over-linear, tedious and unavoidable. Thanks again for the excellent work.

Chaos Theory is my favorite Splinter Cell title, for the Campaign, Coop, definitely the Multiplayer. But I enjoyed Conviction, and I loved Blacklist as well. I kind of wish they went with the Rouge Sam on the run in Washington D.C version of Splinter Cell: Conviction. I like how they tried to turn him into a highly trained version of Richard Kimbell from The Fugitive flipping tables and being improvisational. I like how they stripped him of his gun, suit and gear. While I don't hate the version we got, I think this version that they dropped could have had real potential to revolutionize not only Splinter Cell but 3rd person action games at the time. This was the Gears of War era. Every game had to be super bombastic so to have a game where you'd be expected to be smart and only fight when your back was against a wall would have been a breath of fresh air. Also who doesn't like bearded Sam doing sick body slams in a cafe? *I still want it!*

Though that 1 area looks cool, I think that the mechanic would have been hard to implement for multiple levels without getting stale. Would every area be a big "bubble" with a crowd? I mean, you'd need it to be like that for the huge importance placed on NPCs. Idk. Maybe if they made a single "city", gta style, and had the character need to wait for events, time of day, influence events through his actions with multiple storylines, etc., which now that I think of it sounds cool, but would not be at all a Splinter Cell game. It would be more like some kind of mafia, or, poltical influencer, hacker game (maybe like a Mr. Robot (tv show from amazon)), but not a rogue spy game. Idk.
