As a child I grew up in a stuffy Victorian decorated house. As a child of an immigrant euro family every one i knew thought of this style as a mark of success. One day I walked into my mothers kitchen after coming home from school and the ladies in her kitchen were quite a buzz about a friend who had the audacity to break out of mold and critiqued this woman’s house to no end. She and her husband had built a new home and being a child i didn’t know what the fuss was all about. And in fact I personally adored this lady. She was always cheerful and kind to me when ever she’d visit my mother. After a while I visited her house with my parents and I never forget how blown away I was when we pulled in front of her exquisite spit level mid century home. I had never seen anything so magnificent in my life. I literally couldn’t breathe from excitement . After we entered the house I burst out crying from happiness. It was vibrant with style and colour and screamed hey kid play on the floor.(first time I ever saw wall to wall carpeting. My ,other so friend picked me up and coaxed me to tell her why I was crying. I told her it was the most beautiful house I had ever seen! I told her the house made me so happy! Well she kissed my cheek and hugged me so hard! My parents were so miffed but I don’t care. I grew up and when I got married my husband and I raised our daughter in a mid century ranch with happy colours and enough floor space for kids to play on the floor. I’m a grand mother now I just redecorated my condo. Yes it is mid century modern.

What a beautiful vignette. Spaces should be happy, not so much signifiers of “success” but joyful places to live.

What a progressive lady that friend of your mother was. Even mid century modern style evolves, you don't see people doing wall to wall carpeting now, instead polished concrete is on the rise. Also people use less plastics on furnishing (or more exquisite and recyclable), even the Eames egg chair is using different materials now.

They do make reproductions also at Wayfair or AllModern. I’ve found similar pieces to MCM at a fraction of the price at online mass reproduction sites. Even Walmart & target have similar products to that classic Scandinavian look.

I think he's actually mixing up mainstream mid-century (think 1950's diners with lots of colours and references to the atom and space age) and mid-century modern (think Eames armchairs, with minimal lines and natural materials). The latter have always been more exclusive and expensive.

You must live in Los Angeles. I would try shopping online - because brick and mortar stores can really be cost prohibitive
@Halbmond
@Halbmond 3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason for this is because we tend to remember only the best and most iconic designs from any era, and those often tend to be the most expensive. If you look at an Eames lounge chair or a Swan or Egg chair, those are extremely delicate, sophisticated designs that are not easy to mass-produce at high quality. I’ve got a high-quality La Chaise reproduction and even that cost close to 1000 bucks (the officially licensed one goes for 6000) because its shape is really complex. But if you look at more generic stuff from that time, it wasn’t expensive then and it isn’t expensive now when you buy equivalent products from West Elm or Made.com.

Awesome video!! I inherited some kick ass furniture from my grandma. She was born in 1927 so the furniture that she had when raising her family was mid-century. No one else in my family wanted them when she passed because they all have traditional styled houses (my sister has the live love laugh barnhouse style 😅)! I got some beautiful peg leg furniture and a chair that looks exactly like that one @11:07. I also got her sunburst wall clock. Thanks Grandma, love you and miss you 💗

I inherited my childhood home, a 1940 brick bungalow. My childhood bedroom is totally mid century modern. Other rooms in the home are more traditional but I have mixed mid century modern touches in there as well. The kitchen is genuine mcm with a still working mint green oven. I'm gently renovating it keeping the oven and the flat panel birch cabinets. The smaller of the two bathrooms is tiled in Mamie Eisenhower pink tiles framed in black. At first I was going to renovate the pink out of it but I fell in love with it and I'm happily leaning into it. Makes me happy. I also inherited a Florida room full of mcm cane and rattan furniture. I feel so grateful and fortunate to have been gifted this treasure. Mcm is my favorite style and thank you for explaining it so well. I don't want to live in a movie set so I am mixing and modifying styles. I've toned down the colors to more muted versions of themselves (except for the pink bathroom) and that is working for me. Thank you for this video and all your other excellent videos.

I absolutely love MCM! In my apartment, I’ve blended MCM and Scandinavian by mostly using furniture that’s either from that time or inspired by it, and mostly Scandinavian in origin. I’m using a bit more color than you see in many Scandinavian interiors but my colors are muted and dominated by neutrals, and while I opt for dark woods and a generally darker color palette, I also try to maximize light. I’m also mixing lots of natural materials with engineered wood, polypropylene and fiberglass, and subtle use of modern tech. I think the two styles blend really well!

As a child of the 50s, I remember midcentury furniture. We were too poor to afford it, but one of my neighbors had the most beautiful orangey coral tweed type sofa, pale oak (?) tables, coffee table and gorgeous lamps. It could have been featured in House Beautiful. It made me happy to look at it. Maybe that's why MCM is so popular now - people want to feel good.

Our very "beige" RV needed some color! After ripping out the carpet and vinyl, we replaced it with pale gray plank flooring. Took out that hideous U shaped dinette and turned the half circle table to face the window. Adding 2 lovely white and gray tulip chairs. Our colors are turquoise, orange, gold, gray and beige. Such fun to find mid century pieces to brighten our tiny place. We travel full time exploring the USA. Enjoy your channel ❤️

Nick seriously great video. I really love the recommendations of mixing in various pieces without overwhelming a space. I think there is a difference between gentle hints of mid century vs making the space look almost comical. A number of folks take mid century modern and go full on Sputnik. Very nice and educational. Great video

Being alive actually during the mid century in progressive Los Angeles, remembering my own family transition from traditional to MOD. My mom, the first divorcee' on the block, a single mother working as an RN and a blue Mustang convertable in the driveway...we were so hip and groovy. A mash up of Mad Men and the Brady Bunch. We saw The Beatles at Dodger Stadium! in 1969 Mom threw out all our traditional xmas ornaments replacing our silver plastic tree with a Pepto Bismol pink flocked live tree with matching hot pink bulbs. The other kids on the block got train sets. I got a surf board and banana bike. Other kids went to the nutcracker ballet we went to see the play, "Hair"! Good memories/ good times!

I grew up in a cluttered home and I am an extremely minimal person and fell in love with mid century style design. Thanks for this video because I was getting so overwhelmed looking at furniture. Also I was able to score a nice mid century modern chair on fb marketplace so that's a win. One more thing I reupholstered an IKEA Karlstad sofa in mustard yellow with updated modern legs and a geometric black and white rug. I'm getting there!

Basically, my husband would say my style (or lack thereof) is nuts and I would say his is boring 🤣 Would love videos on how to "mix" or compromise with styles, find the middle ground between the different styles!

I would find high quality solid wood pieces for cheap prices but after Mad Men and American Pickers came out, more people gotten into thrift, fleamarket and antique shopping and pieces soon became expensive and hard to find. My grandparents had a SF Bay Area Eichlier inspired home...and maybe that's why the grandchildren of the greatest generation gravitate so much towards mcm. It was also a very different time as men came back from participating in the battles in the Pacific and you get the Polynesian lines in some of these homes. A very dynamic period in history full of catalysts.

Being born in 1966 my entire childhood was lived in houses decorated mid century modern so it holds such a special place in my heart with fond childhood memories. My dad's recliner was that one (the name escapes me at the moment) but its iconic and we had all the formica and starburst wall clocks and tall table lamps and wall to wall drapery and the old station wagon in the driveway. With that being said I do have my grandmother's mid century coffee tables in my house but my style is so much more traditional. French country / Italian Villa / English farmhouse

I have a 1950 ranch home. I’m looking to furnish with mid century furniture so thanks for this. I have a few pieces from my parents that are authentic min century. Looking forward to watching your other videos. Very informative. Thanks!

My furniture is mostly mid century, like in actual handed down vintage furniture from the 50s. I love to pair it with art deco pieces, they go together perfectly.

I dont see mid-century design as basic! So classic and very architectural. Some of the great furniture designers flourished during this time.
@Nick_Lewis

I think I more mean simple over basic. Clean, straight lines with minimal ornamentation compared to traditional styles. It makes total sense that some of these iconic designs from the mid-century came from designers that were also architects. Hence the use of sculptural furniture pieces.

Great intro on mid-century classics. Own the Eames chair & stool and Barcelona. Their simplicity blends very well with other contemporary pieces. Will consider cushion covers next. Love the mid-century graphics and pop of colours.

Good video. Another bonus for MCM is the smaller scale of many (not all) pieces of furniture. If you live in an apartment or pre-90's home, MCM may be for you. A third option for where to buy: stores that specialize in MCM. Here in St. Louis, we have TFA "The Future Antiques." The prices are higher than what you might pay at a flea market, but it's a curated selection, and often the pieces are "like new."

Just found your channel and love it. I moved to West Palm Beach from Manhattan 6 years ago and decorated my large living room in Mid Century Modern .. I used to visit Design Within Reach downtown Manhattan because I loved their furnitures and when we moved we bought everything from the store on Park Ave. and the one they have here in WPB. I always liked their designs and designers.( I own the clock 😊) I Truly enjoy your telling us about all the different designs, would love Japandi .I do not care for home goods and loved Muji when I lived in Manhattan.

We're slowly bringing life back into our midmod ranch. She's a fixer upper for sure 😄. I think the biggest eye sore for me now is our kitchen. Plywood cabinets, painted over wallpaper, and 3 layers of floor! They could have left the wallpaper, I probably would have loved it!!

Caught sight of a coat rack from Design within Reach in this video and now I must have it! I love mid-century modern furniture, but my style is very, very eclectic. I love natural textures, interesting macrame pieces, funky color combinations, etc. Except in my bedroom which is very Japanese inspired as I find it calming. And also, I MUST have that coat rack!

I got a (literally - vintage) mid century modern danish teak folding desk for free a year ago, when we were sent home to work so I needed a desk I could put in my living room. It is the most amazing thing ever, and looks very nice despite being a bit scratched from being stored in someone's basement for years. I wasn't sure how it would look in my otherwise modern grey/white/light teal living room, but oddly enough it fits. Have since drifted towards that style :) Added: looked up that desk online, they're for sale/auction quite regularly, but relatively expensive. I recommend knowing an older person who wants to get rid of stuff before selling their house lol

Realizing every store can't be listed, a great store was left out - Room & Board. Located throughout the U.S., Room & Board offers mid-century modern furniture as well as traditional and contemporary designs. As a plus, their customer service is outstanding. Well worth checking out.

I love mid century modern with a touch of retro. I just don’t remember people adopting it as much as they do today. I have some pictures of some pretty nice pieces my grandparents had but it’s not the Scandinavian look we see today. Thanks for this video!

@Armlesscrayon

@@duanemajer3453 Mid century is not the same era as retro. Mid century is mid century. And mid century modern is more of the Scandinavian look. Retro is 70’s you know with the burnt orange, avocado green and brown. Oh.and the big round rubbery plastic swag lamps... But I will take tacos with a touch of Mexican flavour. 🙂

I really like that it's pointed out that this style of 'thing' is cheap to produce than the old hand crafted sort of style, that's a massive reason it is still around and became big in the first place.
