There are trends that have value in some surprising ways. When the sliding barn doors hit the scene I was a tiny bit intrigued but very quickly realized that the millions (😉) of people that went to the often significant expense to have them installed will be stuck in the mid 2000’s style. Well 1.5 years ago I was unfortunately forced to become wheelchair bound and we hired a contractor to redo our entire bedroom suite. He essentially begged me to trust him when he wanted to install sliding barn doors into my bedroom and bathroom. I have since realized that they are the easiest way to open/close doors for someone in a chair. I thank goodness every day for this “trend”!

I'd also like to see more design for average living rooms that includes the 50 inch flat screen TV AND a fireplace that may or may not be in regular use. Also ideas that help for safety for older people - rugs for instance - I love them but they are a tripping hazard. Better lighting, and even reading lights by chair in living room.

One trend I see is the gallery walls with online, ordered from the same site, bought mixy matchy prints...I dunno but half the fun of putting together a gallery wall is curating the pieces, bringing together meaningful, fun, heirloom, quirky art not just ordering a handful of "go together" prints. What does a gallery wall mean to you? I know we all have different ideas!

Just started a gallery wall in my living room bc I've collected some pieces over the last year that work really well together. Never been one for portrait art but inherited my father's (yes he made them 70 years ago!) needlepoint Little Boy Blue and Pink Lady, and that spurred me on to find a 1760's sampler, a 1900 French fashion magazine with models in period dress centerfold, and hubby added his King Edward and Queen Alexandra framed pics. To me, truly elegant and I adore it. My dad's fault;) ❤

Hehehehe I get the being over boho thing because of Instagram and Pinterest oversaturation...however I LOVE the modern minimalist scandi boho look and always have. Back in my early 20s (the late aughts, early tens) I didn't know what design styles were called. I remember describing my personal and interior style as, "I am not pretentious, but I love pretentious hipster Brooklyn apartment style...like warm white walls, books, travel and found things as colourful decor, and natural materials." My cousin Matt, who lived with me at the time, said, "You can say you're not, but you are a pretentious hipster." Haha so I think if what I like hasn't really changed in 10-15 years, I think it's safe to say that's my design style. Lol

I think a boho or eclectic style is good if it is a look that has grown over time. I think I would describe my style as boho with a slant towards mid century. Every item we have has been added to our home is because we genuinely love it, and when traveling we are mindful of what we bring back, but overall we fit within a mid century aesthetic. I think the pushback is against insta boho, where every single world traveler item was actually bought at ikea or homegoods. I think any style ends up looking awful when it is clear that the homeowner just put a bunch of stuff from a catalogue page into their cart just because they were all labeled of that style rather than because they put thought into how the items serve their life or are an expression of who they are.
@_ashleylh3 жыл бұрын
@@cincocats320 agreed! Mid century modern furniture is my "background". I'm pretty functional and minimal. I don't like excess in my home because I am 3 weeks away from having my third boy (my others are 2 and almost 4), and I don't want to make it difficult to clean! Everything I bring in my home is intentional. I'm a traveler too at heart, so that's where my touches of eclecticism come from, too. My home colour scheme is warm white, warm light and dark grey, cream, black, natural weave and warm mid brown leather. Then my touches of colour from various items shine (although it's mostly earth tones!) One of my prize possessions is a large painting done by a street artist that I got in Bangkok. It hangs over my upright piano. Any other art is mostly family photos, from local shops, or etsy. I feel like this is specifically seasonal, but I was in a Joann craft store today buying some DIY stuff and I noticed that they had a completely white and mint section of autumn decor. Why? Why did Joanna Gaines curse us with this? Nature literally gave us the color palette. If you’re going to decorate for autumn at least use actual autumnal colors. They don’t even have to be bright. You can do wheat and russet brown, but please just use actual autumn colors. Nobody needs to fill their house with white blown glass pumpkins. On a side note, I actually have a stump side table I made myself from a maple stump I found on the side of the road and I still love the thing. It took a lot of work, and being maple it’s a very light wood that seems to blend in with lots of different styles. So I plan to keep it, even though the stump table craze is waning.
@koalaeucalyptus3 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree on the whole color palette thing. I love nature's palette, but I think being trapped by its colors is limiting and gets boring eventually. Shaking things up a little using unexpected colors and/or items can be a refreshment, but that of course depends on how tasteful those are.

It's heresy, I guess, but I personally hate open floor plans. IMO. they are unrealistic for a family. If you have one child practicing a musical instrument, another person trying to watch TV, a child's school project spread all over a table (which can't be moved because of wet glue and glitter) and someone else cooking, it is impossible to do them all at once in what is basically the same room without some interference. Not to mention that you have to have your entire house clean all at the same time to be ready for drop-in guests--you can't just quickly close the door on one particular mess when the doorbell rings. I especially don't like the kitchen visible from the dining room. I'm a messy cook; I don't particularly like the trauma of my cooking :) right in the face of my guests, nor do I like the inevitable cooking dishes showing when I serve my feast. There is always some last minute stirring, hence visible cooking pots when you serve your meal, if you want the food to be hot. I don't want to sit down to a meal with a messy kitchen reminding me as I eat that I will have a big clean up job, and it is more difficult to ignore them during the after-meal relaxation time with guests.
@francesh34233 жыл бұрын
Trauma of my cooking?! I snorted out loud! This is me! Love to cook but can't fathom cleaning as I go because well I'm busy cooking!!! I like having defined spaces too as well as more walls to hang things. What makes me upset is when someone buys an old house that isn't meant to be an open floor plan and removes all the walls. If you want open, buy a house that is conducive for it and stop ruining the old houses.
@SophiaCapote3 жыл бұрын
I have these thoughts for the past ten years when everything on hgtv has been "let's take down all these walls so you can see everything from everywhere". I love being able to close the door on a mess or an active project. Sometimes big spaces are nice, but you know what is also nice? Little nooks and alcoves that make you feel cozy, and having a constraint like small spaces lends itself to better design ideas as opposed to a giant plain white box.

Influencers have to show styles everyone loves but not many people have done yet, in order to be "relevant." Sounds exhausting. The rest of us can just live in our homes and enjoy them. So use that ladder if it makes you happy!

I was thinking "painted arches" seconds before it came up :) Great video. I have two suggestions for other videos if you'd find them interesting. 1) how to work with or around structural elements you don't like. Whether it's a niche (easy) a weight holding beam or a column in the middle of your space that cannot be removed or it's too expensive. 2) how much can you mix it up within a style and still keep it? I.e. I love scandi and generally tend towards minimalism, but I do have a few items from trips or gifts or family stuff that I do want to keep. But I am afraid they'll clash with the general style & colour scheme. Same with books (lots of them, not coffeetable cute ones). I don't see how certain trends can be sustained IRL. How do we keep the style essence while having things? Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

I've taken all my books off my shelves and am going to rearrange them according to colour, this weekend. Usually I arrange them according to subject and the fiction books are kept in alphabetical order. I'm not sure how I'll get on with this, but I'm hoping that as well as being visually appealing, it might work like a supermarket changing shelves around - I might find myself picking up a book that I've overlooked. We'll see. I just hope that it doesn't take me too long to put the books back in an aesthetically pleasing order!

I love quilt ladders because my grandma has one with antique handmade quilts on every rung. My husband bought one for me recently that I will hang the quilt that grandma made for me when I was a little girl and the quilt that she and I made together on it. They are twin sized quilts and won't be useful on our queen bed, so I'm really glad that now I have a way to use them and they won't be stuffed into a cabinet where no one will know they exist.

My family has a live edge juniper coffee table from the early 70’s. It’s been handed through every household, nobody wants it, but it’s a sentimental thing so no one has the guts to get rid of it for good.

You’re always right on point. I’m very over the framed quotes often created in what looks like a handwritten font. Things like “to the moon & back”. Seems like signage & quotes have just taken over interiors! Why does a living room need a giant “Family” sign? The kitchen a big “Gather” sign? No mas.

I have a small live edge coffee table with touches of resin made by a local artisan for the room where I keep my collectibles and it fits the whimsy of that room perfectly. I love it. I have a kind of ladder thing in my room but I do use it as a functional thing to put my work cloths on for the next day. I guess it really depends on how things are being utilized in their space

I used what I guess is Millennial Pink for my middle daughter’s room in 2017. She’s almost 4 and even she doesn’t like it. I didn’t want to go with pink, but my husband did and I had to give him a win. Never been a pink person and I’m so glad to see it go.

I agree with all of these. Although in some spaces these items could look nice (except for the girl boss and hustle bro decor, those will always be awful 😖). They are just way too overused, which takes the charm out of having them in your space.

Won’t lie, I am pretty much out of decore style trends. I love the ladder for hanging things. I have always loved the antique farmhouse/cabin/rustic look, so the ladders definitely fit it. I understand it’s not for everyone, but I have always been a believer that everyone should decorate a home that feels perfect for their soul. The rustic cabin/farmhouse trends has always been a style I love and of course I love pink so I will always be accenting with grays and whites and blacks.

I still love that particular Ikea wicker pendant (not so much the rougher basket ones). It is beautifully designed and good design has staying power. I think it's a victim of its own popularity. It's too bad that Ikea ran it as long as they did, instead of trying to come up with different iterations. I like how you addressed wicker in general, it is a useful and beautiful material - just maybe not in every square foot of the room.

I agree with literally all of these but what I find hilarious is that I just watched "Motel Makeover" on Netflix and they were using ALL of these trends. Blush pink, painted arches, inspirational neon signs (!!) and fake plants galore. It was horrendous... (Also, I just saw a ladder in someone's living room). My own "needs to go": barn doors and all white kitchens.

I agree with these, except that I love a soft, dusty pink. But I've liked those softer and more neutral pinks for years and before it started becoming popular, so I won't stop liking it yet lol. I do agree that it seems overused though and I also don't like the influencer style, but that just means there's a larger selection of things in that color that I can choose from in stores heh. And I also try to combine it with other shades of pink in my living room to make it more interesting. And I just love colors in general, I don't want something too bland and boring. The pink needs contrast

THANK YOU for bringing up the painted arches! They’ve been popping up all over my HGTV shows lately and honestly they just make your living room look like a nursery. I remember this one episode the designer put them on the wall and u could tell on the girls face that she hated them but she had to pretend to like them because she signed a contract saying she’d compliment everything the designer does when she agreed to be on the show.

I have ladders in my kitchen - two of them! They are not decorative, though. I'm 5'1", have 10 foot high ceilings, and my kitchen cabinets are mounted high. I can't reach past the bottom shelf of the tall cabinets without a ladder. One is a paint spattered 2 step ladder I had for years, but isn't tall enough ... so I recently added a 3 step ladder. I hang them on an open wall when they're folded. I don't use them to display things ... they are the display, assuming you like an Industrial look :-)

I, too, have functioning ladders prominently displayed (so I don't forget where they are). They are metal - light weight and splinter-free. My last wooden ladder served a few years as a blanket rack before graduating to the firewood pile.

For me decorative ladders play into multipurpose (example would be as a temporary drying rack for face towels, hand washables or other small items that need to be aired out, like stockings or socks; temporarily placing open magazines on the rungs; S hooks on the ladders that can hold smaller items including mugs, small herbs/plants, or storage pockets/cases/shelves) display and space saving aesthetics (as it's almost flat to the wall while holding multiples, think in or by bedrooms, closets or wardrobes; holding necklaces/bracelets, head or neck scarves, ties, delicates, saris, multi use wraps), bulky (a weighted blanket or thick comforter), beautiful (say custom or otherwise piece of hanging art that requires some draping or tying to the rungs, but requires less intense work like drilling or nailing something into the wall to hang it) & sometimes of sentimental value (heirloom quilts passed fro generation to generation, lace, embroidered hangings, silks, or other delicate pieces that need to be displayed without being out of sight or mind). This is also a display tactic used by online sellers and in some higher end retail, vintage/consignment stores, specialty & event spaces, galleries, pop up/gift shops, and farmers & flea markets, so I can see why someone would try to recreate this aesthetic in their own home, as it might represent the circumstances of how they were drawn to a special item acquired in the first place. However I have to draw the line at using them (or any open shelving for that matter) in bathrooms (especially where the toilet is not in it's own separate space, say an enclosed area with it's own vent fan or a garderobe) to display towels or other items you use on your body (toothbrushes, preferably with a cover or something like a Steripod to allow it to dry while reducing the chance of bacterial growth) No matter how clean it's kept, between coughing, sneezing and trace fecal matter particulates in the air (cannot be avoided if flushing with the lid open, or if the toilet has no lid, just a hinged seat) it's better for hygienic purposes if those items are in an enclosed space (like a linen closet, freestanding or built in cabinet that is as far away from the toilet & sink as can be, or a nearby shelf with glass/plexiglass/plastic windows, which will allow for viewing everything while being behind closed or latched doors). Not a deep seated hypochondriac, but sometimes people have sensitive hygienic and/or medical needs and preferably, I'd like to be able to use a fresh clean towel.

I love my 🪜 For me it is functional. I use it in my living room for throws. While a strategically placed throw on the sofa looks great piles of them do not. Putting them on the ladder looks intentional and keeps me from yelling at everyone in the house multiple times a day 🤣
