Awesome tips! Here are translations for the IKEA names, Swedish to English. Greetings from Sweden. Konstfull - Artistic / Artsy Applaryd - an old Swedish townlike name. Appla/apla=old Swedish name for apple (nowadays "äpple"). Ryd=old name for cleared ground, specific dialect for the district of Småland where IKEA is situated. So, Applaryd = cleared area for apple farming. Nymåne - New Moon Ypperlig - Excellent Ekenäset - Townlike name, meaning peninsula (näset) with oaks (eke). Ullerslev - A town in in Denmark. Gullviva - The flower Cowslip / Primrose Lohals - A town in Denmark. Markfrost - Ground frost Molnart - Literally translates to "Cloud type". Fjädrar - Feathers Kärleksgräs (imaged pillow) - Love grass Sanela - a name, not Swedish Aina - a name, quite common in Finland and Sweden. (Red: Fun addition. Aina is also Swedish urban slang for the police.) Långfjäll - the long mountain. "Fjäll" is a mountain or high elevation area without trees. Bumerang - Bumerang Tillagd - Added Ombonad - Snug Solklint - Sun cliff. "Klint" is a flat area above a cliff. Tjabbig - Cruel / Disgruntled. Old Swedish, not really used nowadays.

That's funny, I just bought an Applaryd sofa (and it's much cheaper here in the UK, wow!). It is beautiful and I don't really regret my purchase but I should warn others about two negatives I'm experiencing: it's not deep enough and the back cushions are surprisingly hard.

Its really made to sit up straight, like you would sit in an office chair, its not lounge around the house furniture, and that would be a problem. I have a couple chairs that are like that, people hate them and I'm like "sit up straight" and then they are like 'Oh". Mostly people avoid them, which is fine by me, less wear.

I got the cream Langfjall for exactly the reasons you. mentioned - I wanted something that was comfortable but that looked good, and wouldn't dominate my space. I live in a traditional Japanese apartment which has an open-concept kitchen/living/dining area, and my 'office' is in the corner of that area. It'll be never be beautiful, but I found changing the chair made a big difference. Like others have mentioned, I also have added a pillow for a little extra support but I've been very happy with it.

The problem with cheap feather down pillow inserts is over time the feathers start poking through, which doesn't feel great and they get everywhere. I switched to polyester for that reason and found them much more comfortable, too. Maybe that's a personal thing, but still be careful buying cheap feather pillow inserts.

On the topic of hangers I've heard that velvet hangers are a good option, my closet is 50% gorgeous with wood hangers, and 50% a disaster with one of just about every hanger you can possibly imagine. Velvet hangers gently trap clothes with friction so they keep any items that wood hangers struggle to hold onto without needing to use pegs or clips.

An IKEA chair that has a designer look and superb quality that often gets overlooked is the FLINSHULT armchair. Especially in what they call brown/beige with what looks like a chevron pattern. I think that fabric color looks more like a neutral grayish-sage. The chair is gorgeous and timeless, the fabric is chic and it is built well. You have to see this chair in person and sit in it to truly appreciate the comfort, quality, and construction. Remember, not all the pieces in your home have to be exactly period matching to the era that you like. This has a little bit mid-century modern vibe, a little American traditional vibe. It's a little on the higher end price point, but well worth it.

The other great thing about Sanela is that it is 100% cotton velvet! (Or at least the curtains are, not sure about the pillow covers.) This is extremely hard to find!! (I am a natural fibers snob, though even I had to compromise on one set of curtains because there just wasn't a shade in Sanela that fit for the room, but West Elm had some poly velvet curtains that worked...*sigh*.)

Wooden hangers are a lot nicer to use, and they last a lifetime. I have some 80-100 year old wooden hangers and they're still going strong. Even when treated carefully, plastic hangers eventually wear out. After a decade or so the top hook stretches out. If wooden hangers wear out or break they can at least biodegrade.

A couple things though, every ikea sofa I've had has had squeaky springs, applaryd included. Sitting down and getting up can be a little noisy. Also, as someone else said, the back cushions are a little hard. But what I love is that the seat cushions are integrated to the base so they dont move and crumbs and dirt don't get buried under them. The fabric is also pretty wash and wear with any spot treatment I've tried.

Fun /random tip: due to IKEA being a Swedish brand and using a lot of random Swedish words for their products, it could be a fun idea for your ikea videos to translate the products names into English as well so that the names aren't just gibberish xD Just a thought :) The lamp NYMÅNE that you talked about for example means New Moon in swedish Note: some names are just gibberish, but it could make a bit more sense to know what the products names native meanings are :) Edit/ update: A few people has left some good and constructive comments that mentions and specifies "why" and "from where" IKEA products gets their names from and their background / meaning. I had no idea about this but it was interesting to learn so thank you! :) I'm Swedish myself and when I wrote that some of the names are "gibberish", was that from my perspective of having never come across some of the more niche / uncommon words/ product names. It was also from my perspective of watching a lot of non native Swedish speakers (English /American /Canadian KZbinrs) that often had difficulties pronouncing the products names correctly which added to them sounding made up to me (and presumably for a lot of other non swedes). That is why I took the liberty of assuming that some of the names were scrambled together due to them sounding so abstract and unknown to me, based on my native language / vocabulary. I was not intending on spreading misinformation about IKEA, I was just unaware. Thanks for the likes though :) It would be fun if Nick would see this and would like to start implementing some of the translated Swedish IKEA names and turn them into English for more culture and substance :)

I'm swedish, none of the names are gibberish. This is how Ikea usually name their products: Bathroom articles = Names of Swedish lakes and water connections. Bedding = Flowers and plants. Beds, wardrobes, hall furniture = Places in Norway. Bookshelves = Professions, Scandinavian boy names. Bowls, vases, candles and candle holders = Places in Sweden, adjectives, spices, herbs, fruits and berries. Boxes, wall decorations, paintings and frames, clocks = Swedish slang words and places in Sweden Children's products = Mammals, birds, adjectives. Desks, chairs, swivel chairs = Scandinavian boy names. Fabrics, curtains = Scandinavian girl names. Garden furniture = Scandinavian islands. Kitchen accessories = Fish, mushrooms and adjectives. Lights = Units of measurement, seasons, months, days, shipping and nautical terms, places in Sweden Rugs = Places in Denmark Sofas, armchairs, chairs and dining tables = Places in Sweden Fun fact, some of the products are actually named after their employees.

Hi, Swedish IKEA specialist here. For those interested - the names of IKEAs products are not actually that random at all. The rugs are named after places in Denmark (Ullerslev is a place in Denmark), the outdoor furniture are named after islands in Scandinavia, curtains all have female names (Aina is a woman's name of Finnish origin), sofas are named after Swedish places (Äpplaryd is a place in southern Sweden), and so on. Exceptions exist of course. 🙂

Non of the words are gibberish, they are also names of places, people etc as well as words with meaning.

I love learning technical interior design terms such as the squishibilty of pillows 🤣 But seriously I get what you are saying, I will try to remember next time I go to Ikea to look at pillow inserts! Closest Ikea to me is 2 hours drive away so I don't get to go often ☹️

Love ya channel mate ! Lohal rugs are awesome have two and they are solid ! What about the new Vaghojd lamp ? It’s incredible a big pricey at $230 bucks here in Australia but I’ve seen similar here in big designer boutiques going for upwards of $2000-$5000 love it for high drama or minimalist interiors as it’s huge with the arm at nearly 2.3 meters … Keep up the awesomeness mate 😉

thank you for the nice video Nick! I got some new ideas for my new home now. Excited!!! I went for brass silverware from HomeSense instead of IKEA. HomeSense has a even better price point and better quality/look on silverware I believe. So if you’re in Canada I think that’s a great place to go to pick silverware 😊😊😊

To add to what you were referring to with IKEA and furniture designers. My grandfather was the designer for the Poäng chair in the 40’s and was business partners with Ingvar. I know very well of the practicing IKEA has been doing since before they even existed outside of Sweden. They are too big to even begin to fight with.

Re: Flatware. If you spent $280 on the longer lasting set, you would save a lot of money over time, especially if you have to replace an $80 set every 2 years. I'd rather take the plunge and never have to replace it ever. Otherwise, right on Nick.

Yes I ultimately came to that conclusion too. However I also totally get that $280 isn't even an option for a lot of people so the Tillagd is a good choice.

Yep, agreed. My Grandma bought my stainless steel flatware for me, something she started when I was a teenager. She would purchase one place setting per month (in today's money, something around $40 per place setting). So yes, it took more than a year for me to get enough place settings as she was also buying flatware for my sister, as well. Then, my Mom purchased the companion pieces (serving spoons, grapefruit spoons, pie server, etc) for me as a Christmas gift. I've had that same flatware since the late 1980's, and it still looks beautiful.

@@JillWhitcomb1966 Wow what a thoughtful and creative gift. My MIL bought me some nice flatware after seeing I didn't have enough when they came over for dinner. It's just not something you really think about investing in until you get older so what a great gift for a grandma or even parent to get their teen for when they fly the nest!

@@striketochill You are spot-on. My Grandma thought it was important, so she made the monthly investment. Every time I eat a meal, I think of her time, effort, and energy going into buying that flatware for me. It's a really nice memory !

Been buying this sheepskin for years. My cats love it. I put it on arms of my sofa. My sofa is totally intact because of this item. It's only 10 dollars more right now, since I starting buying it when ikea first came to the US. Do you have Virgo planets? I just love your taste and your videos in general.

I had the feather inserts from IKEA, worst idea ever! The fabric of the insert is super cheap and the feathers are so hard that poke through the fabric and you could feel them poking your skin. As some time went by the feathers started poking through the cover and I had tiny feather pieces all over my apartment. Seems like a good deal, but definitely the quality is not great.

While I usually agree with most of the things you recommend Nick, I have to disagree on the pillows. I bought the IKEA FJADRER on your previous recommendation and they drive me nuts. As soon as someone uses them, and then they get up, I’m left with squished pillows. They’re also not that comfortable to actually lean against because they squish down so much. Perhaps I bought duds but I just can’t get along with them. So I bought replacement pillows, which are much more supple and do bounce back a bit more. I can lean against them and get comfortable and I’m not constantly readjusting them after every use.

Another great video. I find Ikea very overwhelming at times so I've made a list of all of your suggestions for next time I go. The fluted glass light shades may look good in my new kitche....I have a barrel vaulted ceiling with 3 original hooks hanging down the centre...thought it could be good for light fitting. Any thoughts? Will use the green vase in the cloakroom with my Charles Darwin inspired Graham & Brown wallpaper. As I said, I have a lot of finishing touches to still complete. Thanks for your videos Nick.

Nick the description of the Fjadrar at 12:37 on video states filling is duck feathers, no down. Is the materials listed incorrect? I bought a feather and down pillow at another store which must be all feathers as they are consistently popping out and on the living room floor.
