Also with Woodhead that it got electrified in the 1950s and I don't think the overhead lines could fit into one and two as well. Don't quote me on that. But do love Disused stations, great video
@MidlandMark10 күн бұрын
Correct: A new station was opened in 1953 by the Eastern Region of British Railways on a different site in conjunction with the opening of the new Woodhead Tunnel and electrification of the line. The station was closed on 27 July 1964 but the line remained open for passengers trains until 1970 and to freight traffic until 1981.
@martinreed95659 күн бұрын
@@Sim0nTrains if you look at some of the earlier pictures of the Woodhead tunnel before the war they clearly is overhead wire aiming towards the two twin tunnels so they must’ve changed their mind partway through and built a new tunnel. I can’t find any information on that whatsoever of course the new tunnel didn’t open until after the war. Another silly fact about the tunnel I understand that the wire was generally much much higher than its sister wire on the great Eastern and would’ve taken 25 kV without any problem. Shame you could’ve had electric trains from King’s Cross via Sheffield to Manchester.

Brilliant video Nick, the section about Woodhead Station was particularly interesting. As a regular user of the Stockport to Sheffield line and it's associated overcrowding problems (what a complete P in the A that is!) I was quite gobsmacked to learn how a possible solution to this was discarded in such a crazy, shortsighted fashion, relatively recently. Great work in exposing this!
@jameshodgetts75417 күн бұрын
Thats the thing, its relatively recently, and with todays eyes it seems bonkers. However, rail travel was in terminal decline and was still declining 30-40 years ago. Its only the last decade or two we've really seen rail take on its role as an important infrastructure again.

We'd go there regularly and I've been in the signal box while it was operational. You should have looked for it on the Manchester-bound platform. You can still found the outline of where it stood. I like this as a new series - there are SO MANY cool abandoned stations for you to discover.

Middleton towers station is currently getting funds for repairs to turn into a museum and coffee shop and if you time it right youll see the Middleton Towers sand train freight parked up in the freight loading site literally next door to it. Wolferton is very well preserved and was one of the stations on the Hunstanton line gen royal family used to use to get to Sandringham

I remember being on a stopping strain after Meadowhall opened, when there was only 1 or 2 trains day at Brightside and Attercliffe Road. Another two stations I can remember actually going to and getting off at were the old Rotherham station, and Melton Halt - near Hull, when it had one train a day in one direction - so I had to walk back to Brough to get the train back again. I also went to Altofts too in the early 1990s just because I could LOL.

Brocklesby's track plan kept changing, there used to be four lines to barnetby (now only 2 downs 1 up.) But in the 80s BR removed both extra ups and downs, The line that serves the freight only side of the curve were torn up aswell. But people argued that the route sustained enough traffic to deserve 3 lines aforementioned. During this time, there was a normal 2 track junction instead of the single track ladder. There was also a single down line from habrough passing the other side of the station building, but that was torn up before all of this.
