Head north to Peterborough, Cross Country to Leicester / Birmingham / Reading / Basingstoke / Southampton, you won't get a direct service, I'm not sure where you will need to change. Southern to Brighton then head north on Southern or Thameslink to Coulsdon South That I think avoids any out of station interchanges.
@nathanw97702 ай бұрын
You'd change at Birmingham New St and then get a train to Southampton or Basingstoke. You can also go from Basingstoke to Wimbledon and then Wimbledon to East Croydon on the tram instead of making the long trek through Hampshire and Sussex.

It doesn't qualify as crossing London if you bypass it entirely LOL 😂😂😂

@@abdullahsarker3595 If you want to avoid "Zone 2/3", then you have to. The furthest North you can re-enter London is Feltham, which you could do from Reading.
@petermichaelgreen2 ай бұрын
Regarding routes without "out of station interchanges". If you allow "zone 2/3" stations and only avoid pure zone 2 stations then it's possible to do Crews hill -> Stevenage -> Cambridge -> Tottenham hale -> Stratford -> Woolwhich arsenal -> Elmers end -> Wimbledon -> Tulse hill -> Coulsdon south. (I avoided changing at east crodon because, while it's shown as a direct interchange on the map, the tram stop is not really part of the station, unlike elmers end and wimbledon) If you avoid the "zone 2/3" stations" then going round the east side seems to be simply impossible. So we have to go round the west side. We can do slightly better than katrina's route by using the southern service from Reading to Gatwick, cutting out Basingstoke/Southhampton/Brighton and we could use Nuneaton to Leamington spa to cut another small corner off at the cost of an extra interchange, but it's still an extremely roundabout route.
@ccityplanner12172 ай бұрын
You cannot use trams because trams are part of the bus fare zone. You would be charged a zone 3-6 train journey, a bus journey & a zone 5-6 train journey. To avoid the trams, bail at Catford Bridge, 🚆 Catford - Shortlands - Beckenham Jn. - Crystal Palace - Norwood Jn. - Coulsdon.

the trick: 1. Take a southbound GN to Enfield Chase, then take the 307 bus to just before New Barnet, then change to the 326 to Brent Cross, then change to the 83 to Wembley Park. From Wembley Park, take the Metropolitan to Rayners Lane, the Piccadilly to Heathrow via Acton Town, and then find the SL7 to Teddington. From Teddington, take a Southwestern to Wimbledon, then the Tram to East Croydon, and you know how to go from there...

Surely don't need to go all the way to Heathrow... Wembley Park to Northwick Park, OSI walk to Kenton, Bakerloo to Willesden Junction, Overground to Richmond. Then to Wimbledon either via Teddington or via Putney and East Putney. There might be a bus route directly to the Bakerloo line rather than going via WP too, my NW London bus knowledge is limited though!

Great video. I concur that zone 2/3 stations are fine for avoiding zone 2. I do however have an issue with using the trams. That requires 3 fares instead of 1. Elmers End is also a gotcha station if you don't touch the right validators. You could instead have done Clock House to Kent House and then Penge East to Penge West for an entirely rail option. As long as you completed it in 2hr 50m or less it would have been one fare.
@garybroadhurst35482 ай бұрын
I agree, and it would have been two fares anyway as 3hrs (approx.) is over the maximum journey time. Thus even your suggestion probably would have been not much cheaper than going direct. With the third fare for the tram, probably more than direct.

It's easy to go through Z1 without paying for it ;-) I grew up in canning town, I watched the station being built as a kid. It used to be at the other side of the flyover, served by the North London Line (The Current Overground from Richmond to North Woolwich). The DLR now uses that entire stretch of track and platforms from Stratford to Canning Town. The Lizzy-line uses the stretch of track from Custom House to including the old tunnel under the Victoria Dock. It was set on fire in 1995.

If you get the chance, I'd suggest taking a look at the weird London Necropolis station. It's weird because it was only ever used by funeral trains. Mourners would board a train at London Necropolis, travel direct to Brookwood Station, where the train would enter the cemetery grounds by means of a siding. It existed to solve the perceived problem of a lack of burial space in London. Although a commercial failure, it wasn't what led to the station being closed. During WW2, the station had a direct hit, which destroyed the station, though if you know where to look, you can see where the station entrance used to be, on Westminster Bridge Road

Harringay to Harringay Green Lanes is NOT a marked OSI on the tube map, because that's not what the dashed line between stations mean (though its the natural assumption of what it means). Luckily, it is an OSI - several of them aren't (eg St Pauls - City Thameslink, or Green Lanes - Manor House) and it is highly misleading of the map to show them because of the natural assumption that the dashed lines show interchanges...
