I'm 50 &bwas raised Southern Baptist. Our church made us watch this every Sunday as part if our Sunday School class. This is what younger kids did while the kids 10 & up went to Youth Group. I had totally forgotten about this show & I think you just helped me discovered where my extreme fear of this style of puppet stems from. My family always teased me & called it an irrational fear. To them it didn't make any sense because I never really watched Howdie Doodie with my older sisters. Never watched a horror movie with one of these puppets in it. And oddest of all, Jim Henson creations have never scared me. Quite the contrary, I've always found his Gelflings etc intriguing & comforting. Even his bigger creations with a person inside the puppet never scared me. But THIS show, your clips of this show brought a flood of memories rushing back in & it's no wonder I have Complex PTSD that began as a result of my childhood in an extremely strict Christian household where blanket training begins as as soon as a baby can scoot & roll over & a "Bible Beating" was a literal punishment. Even though this brought back dark memories, thank-you for posting it. A healing journey with an ending is 1 thing, a healing journey with a definite beginning has better chance of success.

I'm 46 yrs old and creepy kids shows like this were common. Made me scared of puppets like this for life. It's one of the reasons that Child's Play was such a horror hit for Gen X; Chucky was the embodiment of the crap we watched as kids. I couldn't even stand the puppets in Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Anyway, just my memories of the little bit of tv I watched as a kid. My folks were pretty much "go read a book or go outside to play" in my younger years.

I felt creeped out. like someone/something was tickling my spine. back then our parents didn't know that pedos gravitate to places/jobs where they have easy access to kids in a "child friendly" setting. you are right about Chucky for sure!! the other 2 things that freaked me out were 1) the clown doll in "Poltergeist". did you see that? 2) those darn Time Out Dolls who stand & face the wall like they're in time out? ooohhh... i just knew those things were really alive & would run around the house at night!!! there was an episode of "Seinfeld " once where Jerry spent the night in Kramer's apt & a ventriloquist dummy named Mr. Marbles was terrorizing Jerry. i was screaming with laughter at that episode because it was my childhood fears come to life!! 😂😂😂

Also talked to them about being careful with adults going up to them. It’s one thing for a person to say, hello or good morning and be on their way not nothing them or stopping to chat with them, also if any adult goes to them to ask for any sort of help where they tell them to go with them to their car or home or away from our house is a big red flag and to not engage and run back home. I think one of the other reasons why they cleared every evidence of the show may also be to protect the kids involved. It’s possible they did it so no one tries looking for the child cast and during those days you could call the program or write letters to them (a lot of kids shows did this in the 90s especially), so they may have also had a ton of numbers and addresses from other kids.

If you think this is bad, Cringevision has a collection of the Ron and Marty skits (not all of them but a surprising amount considering the show is essentially lost) and watching them constantly sends up red flags but also highlights how bad his acting and writing was. @@xinpingdonohoe3978nothing, just confirmation bias. The dialogue shown in these clips of JJ is something you’d hear on any show for kids, example behavior for children wanting to be friends and have fun with their peers while being wary of bad influences. A lot of people think children express themselves towards other kids with the same cautiousness adults do other adults, so if there is an open display of platonic love they immediately assign perversion to its intent. Even the cringevision clips one commenter above mentions didn’t have any red flags. They were creepy, yes, because of that fucking puppet’s dead eyes but not because of the script.

It’s also crazy that the show ran until 2005 and somehow managed to almost completely escape public archiving. To put into perspective how recent that was, it would have shared the air with Spongebob for six years. It outlasted Invader Zim by two years, and it would have been broadcast at the same time as Kim Possible, Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom, Ben Ten and Avatar the Last Air Bender. This is crazy recent to just be so completely, and so successfully scrubbed from existence, regardless of what happened behind the scenes.
