Not to be the person who says yeah, but... but... Yeah, but unfortunately, he wasn't always on the right side. For every few people he saved from abusive cults, there were a few people he made questionable 'rescues' of. I remember one story about a cult member he saved from a cult on behalf of another cult, which I thought had to be a joke, but was the Elma Miller case, where he was hired by one obscure Amish group to kidnap a woman from her new obscure Amish group. If he'd just stuck to rescuing people from groups that were breaking laws, groups like The Family, etc., his story would be great, but sometimes he worked to rescue people from "cults" whose only problem was being seen as insufficiently Christian by a person's parents. It is absolutely maddening, because nearly all cult deprogramming resources are currently run by groups most of us would consider cults and the newer cult fashion in the US seems to be cults that base their belief on enemy cults that don't exist, but whose existence is used to justify terrible things. (Like that guy who wanted to shoot up the pizza parlor because of kids in the non-existent basement.) It's icky to even think about because it's great that he saved people from awful people but also he probably brought people to awful people.

I feel like it's important to note that TFI is super anti-LGBT, and as such (including in the case of Ricky) the primary abusers of young boys were women, not men. Likewise, the whole Flirty fishing thing meant it was primarily women being used to indoctrinate outsiders, not men dragging their wives/girlfriends into it. Bit worth noting that the women would regularly abuse the children too, not just the men. In fact, because they were vehemently anti-LGBT the men were forbidden from "abusing" the boys in that way, so as in ricky's case it was women victimizing young boys rather than the stereotypical scenario.

Motivated reasoning and cognitive dissonance. She's too young to understand what has happened to her and how not normal her upbringing was. There are a lot of other religious cults that still operate, maybe not to the extent of this abuse, but brainwashing children all the same. When you're raised into thinking a certain way you get upset when other people tell you that you're wrong.

I live in Paris, and in primary school and middle school, i knew a girl whose family was part of The Family. I never got to see her outside of school because of their weird restrictions. She had many health complications that led her to stay in the hospital for a major part of her childhood, which i sincerely hope allowed her to not go trough the abuse that they practice on children. We are both 16 now, and i have had no news of her since high school, even from her close friends at the time. She was so sweet and fun to hang out with. All i can do is cross my fingers and pray that she'll realize the hellhole she's been raised in, but after a life of indoctrination, it's very hard to get out. You'll probably never see this, but i hope you're doing well Thais...

That line at the end of Joker about people walking past a dead man on the street was almost certainly Joaquim putting his own life into the story. I've never experienced anything like in the video but I've seen a lot of similar twisted beliefs enforced on my friends and is still prevalent in my community even to this day, like misogyny, beliefs that women only have certain roles which is very degrading. The line in the video "obey because there's no other way" really hit me because a friend of mine felt like she was just being used by her own parents to do things for them with the goal of attaining finances in ethically quastionable ways and was always told "you should just obey because you are just a daughter and we are the parents" ...
