Keep in mind that prior to this, a children's television channel was never tried before. Therefore, they thought the best way to launch Nick was to make it "safe" and educational for children, and without commercials, which would attract parents. Note how they say "parent-approved programming". It took the network almost being bankrupt for them to figure out that this was not what kids wanted.

And that's when the Silver Ball era and Nick began their 1st evolutionary step to become a iconic name for kids television. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3XXk56ih7hmjM0si=ckkDolfYZTDsx6Wz

I had heard that during this era, due to how kids actually felt about Nickelodeon, it was sometimes referred to as "The Green Vegetable Network".

You're actually correct. The reason why they got that moniker is simple...it wasn't what the kids *_wanted_* (which let's face it, Disney Channel's missteps actually saved Nick). It was what the adults in the room *_thought_* kids wanted.

Exactly, when this was shown at Nickelodeon on 92nd Street, the audience was just laughing out loud of how this stupid this was.

Wesley Whiteside Anyone would be after watching their content back then...think about it, just Pinwheel, Video Comics, America goes Bananaz, Nickel Flicks, and (Pocket Money) aka By the Way. 5 straight hours a day, times 3 blocks, repeated 7 days a week. 😑😲 And remember parents, you're paying to buy and watch it from Warner Amex and Cy Schnider.💰📺 Doesn't that sound like fun?😐

It's a shame they don't still hold to those values! Thank you for posting this.

Funny thing, the 1980 Nickelodeon is nothing like today's Nickelodeon.

Well, this comment aged poorly. Because Nickelodeon is in a MUCH better place now than they were when you made this comment. They’ve made tons of great reboots and revivals, they’ve gotten rid of some of their garbage content, they’ve been making TONS of great original content again and they’ve been willing to take risks again. That’s mostly thanks to Brian Robbins, a Nickelodeon veteran who became the new president of Nickelodeon in October of 2018. He’s promised that he’s going to make the entirety of Nickelodeon 100% creative driven. He’s also promised both good original content and more reboots and revivals to their classic shows. So I can safely say that Nickelodeon has a very bright future ahead of us.

1:51 - That FCC logo..... how hold is it? I think it must be from the 1970s; until I saw it here, I thought it was only first used in the 1990s.

Uh did they think showing kids looking bored af was the best way to sell the network? Could they really not get another take of them smiling?

You may call Viacom the hitler of youtube copyright claims, but honestly, after they bought nickelodeon.. they fucking saved it.

Yes, that is 100% true. Warner Amex was using Nick as as Loss leader to sell cable boxes pure and simple. However, the era of Transformers (and other branded toys) happened.
