This coming from a dude that calls a working "studio". We can take a jabs at creators and art directors and their designs, but at the end of the day. EVERYBODY. HAS. THE. RIGHT. TO. DESIGN. THEIR. CHARACTERS. ANYWAY. THEY. LIKE. I don't think we need to forget about the time Fanboy and Chum Chum first introduced their design or when Superman: The Animated Series completely changed the designs for Batman: The Animated Series. Hell Rise of the TMNT is disaster in redesign, but everybody still applaused it.

The African American family trope is nothing new to the media and has been distributed to throughout television for over 40 years now, but how those characters are fleshed out on the drawing board sets the tone. I mean you could create the most blandest of character designs, but still can make the scenarios and personalities interesting, but I digress. Regardless "association" is different from plagiarism those twos don't even mesh well unless a studio department stole the said concept design line for line. If you want the key word for today then that would "Inspiration" if that is the case.

@@TheMightyN You ask me, 2 parents that are supporting and loving and 1 girl, that's all for now. When it comes to family dynamic you're right you could create it quite easily, but what about adding more characters? Why not a grandad or grandma, brother a sister, cousin, it's easy creating a a diverse family. The show easily wanted to create the triangle dynamic, but why not add more characters to easily evade the controversy. And most importantly, why did the creators and nickelodeon go back on it? If they didn't copy it or take inspiration then why not continue on and not care?

​@@nutsandbolts1264 That's more of a hit or miss that I like to call a bland statement. You don't need a large cast to create an outstanding show. Hair Love only focuses on 3 characters and supposedly one of the characters are dead so the family dynamic is broken as I explained earlier. The total you need at best are 1 to 6 characters (in rare cases sometimes 8 characters) whether it is for a show or a series of shorts, of course more characters will be added in the long run that doesn't matter at this point. Now, I also say that because they did include more characters in the form of Maddie's friends... hence the six characters.

Dear Nickelodeon, just tweak the design and let the show air. Having similar character designs also isn’t enough to declare plagiarism or art theft. Universal Studios v. Nintendo proved this claim when Universal lost the court case regarding Donkey Kong’s similarities to King Kong. And you can’t steal art b/c art isn’t created in an empty void. It’s create using pieces of concepts and ideas derived from the creators environment and the media they consume (i.e. art)

I think it should be checked for copyright but limiting shows based on the fact that they have natural hair is limiting content with characters with natural hair. Personally we should celebrate both as long as they don't infringe on the other. Power and Empire thrived although I've never watched either of them. Not much on the black criminal entertainment drug stereotype. So why can two or more shows thrive with characters showing their natural hair and a full family unit. Ideas are limitless and both stories can take different positive directions

I always wonder if people tend forget the word "Coincidence" when they speak. True this black edutainment show does share similarities with the characters from the short, but that is just it. Under no circumstance are both Made by Maddie and the Hair Love the same thing not only are the plot points different, but their themes are as well. Hair Love is about a young girl that wants her father to style her hair, a way to express herself and pay tribute to her mother (hence the name.) Just from the clips this family is broken and trying to get by with what they have which while making it visually appealing through an artist/child's point of view. Not only does that settle in the realism, but tone. Made by Maddie is about some Jesse's Ant-Farm kid, obviously named Maddie, that has a rich family and rich friends that go on remarkable adventures solving all the problems in world while she tries to become a FASHION DESIGNER and develops social skills, blah blah; you see where the differences come in and how quickly the tone shifts from Lifetime to My Little Pony levels of bullshit? *I don't know what you all in the cartoon and art community deem as plagiarism nowadays, but I wouldn't be surprised if the entire line of ya were on some drugs.*
