Right up my alley. Thank you! Getting to know a series well before you buy a major key is advisible in my experience. I looked at maybe 200 mint state 1912-S nickels in auction records and sale listings before purchasing. When I found it, I knew right away that the coin was more appealing in strike and surfaces than 95% of the others I viewed

Thanks for the info. I like the fact that there are coins which can be collected that do not cost a lot of money. I think these are a great place to get started in collecting, and for those of us that like having a collection without a lot invested in it.

You should probably define that, they sell for more than the value? That's a free market and value is always relative. ALL businesses must make a profit or else it's a hobby. There are some businesses that operate at the expense of others and some that operate at the service of others. It took me a long time to make this distinction. "Cheats" who operate at other people's expense are in all industries.

The No Cents V nickels were saved in the day. Just like the 50D Jefferson nickel was also saved immediately. People knew they would be sought after. Many mint state examples exist and are fairly easy to find. Unfortunately that fact makes them worth much less than you would expect from the mintage numbers alone.

I have the 1871 Shield Nickel in an ANACS slab VF-25. I would never part with it though. This coin and the 1886-S seated dime are the two biggest sleeper coins in existence! Good luck finding them in coin shops or at shows. Also have an 1867 Shield Nickel with rays in AU+

I also have nickels I collect the oldest I believe is 1938 or 39 however in my opinion they don't have much value because they are circulated . But I get them all from rolls at the bank . I buy six dollars worth of nickels from my bank and every so often I get older nickels. I collect for the pleasure of finding older coins.

Cool video Daniel! I hope you do a series on all the denominations. I know the biggest problem with the older nickels is the date being worn off. Do the key dates have any distinguishing features or marks that could tell you the year?

There are also Henning nickles 1939- 1944-1946- 1947-1953 ! They also weigh in at around 5.40 grms ! Are these worth anything or are they even legal to own ? There are a few on Ebay ! But im trying to find one in the wild !
@jeffw12673 ай бұрын
According to the law, Henning nickels are illegal to own, but the Secret Service shows no interest in seizing them, or most other counterfeit coins. ICG puts Henning nickels in slabs with special yellow "counterfeit" inserts. They wouldn't do that if they thought the feds would kick in their front door. Bust half dollars were also widely counterfeited, often with hand-cut dies, and they trade for a lot of money. The Secret Service doesn't care about those, either.

...understandable way. I bought some V nickels early on from my local coin person. A year later, I asked what they would pay me for them. After having paid them $250, they said $22!!! Yea, I felt used, taken advantage of, and generally pissed at them.

Thank you for this information. Very interesting. I'm always confused with the pricing of coins. What good is the Greysheet and the NGC/PCGS price guises when nobody seems to adhere to them? Dealers don't pay Greysheet. Why bother referring to a price guide?
@alberthanson19713 ай бұрын
How do you accurately grade coins with soft strikes? I've seen many a case where a raw coin in my opinion is EF or higher, yet the dealer says the coin is G or VG at best. I have a beautiful 1926-S Buffalo with mint luster, but, the reverse is such a soft strike that there's virtually no detail in the horn or tail. But then there are keys and semi-key dates which some dealers seem to be more lenient about the grade. I have the 1921-P and 1921-D Mercury dimes where I would grade them as AG, but dealers would grade them as F. The reverse on both coins is worn to the point where there's no rim remaining. And how do you grade SLQs from 1916-1924 with only one or two digits of the date visible? I have a 1923-S with 1-1/2 digits visible, yet the shield has about 2/3 details.
@CoinHELPu3 ай бұрын
No wear, no missing luster, that is all I can say because it takes visual experience.
@jeffw12673 ай бұрын
I have a common-date Buffalo that was so weakly struck that NGC slabbed it as a mint error. It says "Brilliant Uncirculated - Weakly Struck". I paid $130 for it, which might be too much, but there was no similar coin to compare it to. It is fun to show people.

Jeffs, in my time you could pretty much pull the whole set out of circulation exceptions 38D, 38S, 39D, 39S and probably the 50D; not many sleepers but FS in 65 or 66 and proof Jeffs of 40s and 50s with Cam or DCAM have value. Circulated coins, they simply made too many nickels, in 1964 they went over a billion at both mints!
