The Peanuts specials have always held such a special place in my heart, and I think that's because they treat things with real weight. They aren't afraid to address the fact that children face a lot of confusion, sadness, and uncertainty in their lives as they try to figure things out for themselves, and that's okay.

When I was a kid, I never understood that the play they were trying to put on was the story of the birth of Jesus. They have an inn keeper, his wife and a shepard, but no Mary, Joseph and the baby. Once I figured out what the play was supposed to be, it made Charlie Brown's frustration at everyone for doing it wrong make so much more sense. It also makes the part where Linus tells everyone the real Christmas story and they all listen and learn from it hit really hard for me now. I love this simple little heartfelt story!
@PrayerWarrior43 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: this was almost never shown on TV because the program managers didn't want Linus to quote scripture near the end, the creator Charles Schultz pushed and when it premiered on TV it broke many records and is still played today on TV even though Schultz is no longer with us. He created such lovable characters and lovely stories, the comics are amazing, the TV show was fun, the TV specials and movies are amazing, and the books are so cute! At 9:28, Linus says "Geez, do they still make wooden Christmas trees?" That is because people used to have aluminum Christmas trees in their homes during the 1950s/60s. It was abandoned when people prefer real trees. Nowadays, we have fake trees that can pass as real trees that can be reused every year without cutting down real ones.

The Nostalgia Critic also brings up a very good point in this special. After Linus quotes the bible, it would have been so easy for Charlie to go to a Nativity Set and the kids sing around it, but no. Charlie takes what Linus said and applies it, following through with the true meaning. Incredible.

Or since its obvious they play they're putting on is a Christmas pageant, they could have had the kids suddenly understand and put on the "best show ever" or something like in some Christmas movies but this one is honest about it. The kids don't understand. Charlie takes Linus' words to heart but he leaves the theatre and really goes to think about it. Then the others still don't really understand either but they follow him and through his actions start to get an idea of what it means. And I think that's really special too because I think it strikes a perfect balance between getting the message to the audience without trying to drive it home. Yes they read the Bible verses but they don't lay it out for people what it means. The words can speak for themselves and Charlie's love for the little tree is his own way of showing it without any big spectacle. Which even a lot of religious stuff ends up doing is still making a spectacle of it.

Charlie Brown Facts: Okay so a little background this started as a long running comic strip called Peanuts by Charles Schulz even though he hated the name, but it was called that because of Howdy Doody’s Peanut Gallery. Anyway this was the first Charlie Brown special and Coca Cola who was the sponser for the special were fine with it as long as the message that Linus gives was taken out where he quotes the Bible, but Schulz and his team were fervent it stay in and it payed off as not only did the special win an Emmy, but also a Peabody award for excellence in television which is an award fnamed for the American businessman and philanthropist George Peabody, honor the most powerful, enlightening, and invigorating stories in television, radio, and online media While there are a total of 5 Charlie Brown films so far I would recommend watch multiple specials of various kinds besides the holiday ones to get to know the characters and what the kind of vibe they give off before jumping into the films. Also the reason basically everyone is mean to Charlie Brown is Charles Schulz made him as a character for the audience to relate to, as someone to root for even when things almost never go his way and the shows and comics were never afraid of having children talk about various grown up situations in a mostly mature or unique way and the way the holidays were being portrayed in the 60’s with over commercialization of Christmas is what Schulz wanted to tackle, To break down some of the main characters that you saw in the special: Charlie Brown is the main one and his dog is Snoopy, Sally is Charlie Brown’s little sister and she has a crush on Linus and calls him “My Sweet Baboo”, Lucy Van Pelt is the older sister to Linus and the main jazz theme that is basically the main theme of the specials and heard on the radio around Christmas time is called Linus and Lucy, they have a younger sibling who is introduced later named Re-Run, Schroeder is the piano player who loves Beethoven and is Lucy’s love interest even though he wants nothing to do with her and she will usually talk while he plays on his piano also notice in this how he plays various high quality versions of Jingle Bells, but what Lucy likes is the most simplistic one finger press version, Violet, Patty, and Frida are the girls who usually are with Lucy and pick on Charlie once in a while, Pig Pen appears in a special once every now and then, Some other notable characters that would be introduced in later specials include Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Franklin, and Woodstock, Also the adults in the specials you never hear actual words from as it is a trombone sound which was something that was inspired by Schulz real life as he had a hearing problem for a long time and that is how they all sounded to him “wah Wah wah wom” Also the whole point of the special is character driven and it’s beauty is through it’s simplicity and just a heads up basically all of the specials are half an hour or less like this one. They are not out to tell a grand story or have a big bad villain sometimes a story can have the simplest plot and just let characters breath and talk about various things, Now some of the specials to list off include: Happy Hew Year Charlie Brown, Be My Valentine Charlie Brown, It’s the Easter Beagle Charlie Brown (watch after It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown), It’s Arbor Day Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, It’s Magic Charlie Brown, You’re Not Elected Charlie Brown, It’s a Mystery Charlie Brown, It’s Christmas Time Again Charlie Brown, Charlie Brown Christmas Tales, He’s A Bully Charlie Brown (which was the last one Schulz approved of before his death), there is a ton more, but this is just a small sampling, The films that have come out in release order are: A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home, Race For Your Life Charlie Brown, Bon Voyage Charlie Brown, and the most recent The Peanuts Movie,

Lots of cool fin facts here! I thought the reason the adults talk with the muffled noise was because there's never any adults in the comics. So usually the joke showed a comment / question to someone off screen and the punch line being a reaction to the response the audience can interpret in a number of ways. So they wanted to translate it to the film the same way where there's a presence just never seen. I had no idea about Schultz hearing problem

11:32 Linus's speech is a direct passage of the Bible, Luke 2:8-14. Which is interesting, because Charles M. Schultz was an atheist.

Peanuts was originally meant for adults, that’s why the kids act so grown up. It started as a newspaper syndicated comic strip, so the kid appeal came later. The strip started in 1950, this was produced in 1965. The music was composed and performed by Vince Guarldi and he continued to do it for other Peanuts specials. He died in 1976. This genre of music has been referred to as West Coast Jazz. Dave Brubeck is probably the most famous of that genre. His music also reminds me of this.

A Charlie Brown Christmas on television always let kids know the Christmas season was at hand and Linus reminded us the meaning of Christmas. On the radio they would play "Snoopy's Christmas vs the Red Baron", also known as "Snoopy's Christmas Bells." The 60s group The Royal Guardsman had great success with the song Snoopy vs the Red Baron and made a Christmas sequel song which was also a hit. The song also references the 1914 Christmas truce of World War 1.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but, a cool thing about this special (and all the Peanuts/Charlie Brown specials & shows that followed it) is that the characters are all voiced by actual kids. In most cartoons, the majority of the voices are done by adults pretending to be children. That's partly what gives the Peanuts characters that unique sound and gives them a kind of genuineness that's just different from when an adult or teen actor is doing a childlike voice. The kid voicing Charlie Brown was only 8 years old and the little girl voicing Sally was only 6. (Since you mentioned that you loved Sally's voice, I thought you might find that interesting).

The music is definitely one of the best things about this! Yeah, back in the day there was only Saturday morning cartoons and a little bit of kids' programming in the after-school hours. So these TV specials, which were usually only a half-hour, were exciting and they only aired the one time per year. (this was pre-cable, and before you could rent stuff). So this would be on with another half hour Xmas special. You'd get an hour of Xmas programming, a bit of Charlie Brown and then one of the others. It's ok if you didn't love it! The soundtrack itself is a classic and you'll hear it in supermarkets and on the radio around the holidays. It's definitely evocative and I'm happy you felt the same way about it as I always have!

I'm glad you watched this, Nick. Back in the 60s and 70s the comics were a kid's favorite part of the daily newspaper, especially the Sunday paper when it was in color. The Peanuts cartoons, as the Charlie Brown and Snoopy comic strips were called, were always the top of the first page because they were the most popular. We also got a lot of the printed books with these cartoons in them. So we knew all these jokes in the Charlie Brown tv specials, including Lucy having a psychiatric booth instead of a lemonade stand, Linus never being without his blanket, and Snoopy... well, being Snoopy. So yes, when you say there's a lot of nostalgic value to this sweet little cartoon, you're absolutely right. And I agree with you, the best part for me as an adult is the music and whether I watch the show or not, I definitely listen to the music every year.

Linus is the kid with the blanket. 3. Lucy (the girl in the blue dress) is pretty rude. 4. Charlie Brown has depression and anxiety. 5. Lucy likes Schroeder (the kid with the piano) but Schroeder doesn't like her back. 6. Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, and Sally were all introduced into the Peanuts strip as babies/toddlers. 7. There's a local tree that eats kites. 8. Woodstock (a tiny yellow bird) is Snoopy's best friend. 9. The dirty kid is named Pigpen. 10. The current 'Peanuts gang' consists of Charlie Brown, Sally Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Pigpen, Snoopy, Woodstock, Linus, Franklin, Peppermint Patty, and Marcy. 11. Everyone calls Charlie Brown by his first AND last name. (u don't have to do this tho..)

Before there was home video and 24-hour cartoons on TV all the time, and before everyone was so blase' and cynical about everything, something like this was intensely awesome for a kid. I remember running home from a friend's house at dusk one evening to catch the beginning of it. Charles Schultz's long-running "Peanuts" comic strip (still rerun in newspaper syndication) was beloved through the 1960s. There was even a lunar mission where the vehicles were named after Peanuts characters. The Christmas special was the first time (other than a few commercials) that people watched these characters animated. They hired fairly inexperienced child actors, which (combined with the need to splice together long speeches the kids didn't manage in one take) gave it a distinct peculiar feel. Combined with the unexpectedly jazzy Vince Guaraldi music (which became instantly and permanently associated with these characters), the whole production was an instant classic. Most of the gags were lifted bodily from the comic strip (though sometimes in different contexts; Charlie Brown being unhappy with a holiday that emphasizes his loneliness was from a Valentine's Day strip).

This might sound odd. But I think the best part of of Charlie Brown’s specials (all of them, not just this one) was how unconventionally cruel the kids were in comparison to how other kids cartoons can be. Or, I guess the way that Charlie Brown interacts with them. The kids aren’t even over the top villainous, they’re just insensitive, mean kids. Charlie kinda represents the Everyman who is trying to live in a world full of people who don’t understand him. He tries his hardest but it often isn’t enough. And usually the way the conflict is resolved is small, cause the stories are small, but still emotionally satisfying. The low budget animation does kinda distract for me sometimes but I’m always blown away by the writing, though it seems simple on the surface. I was always challenged by Charlie Brown’s stories as a kid, it made me think deeper about things. Edit: Have you seen the original Grinch? From the 60s? :) I’d love to see you react to that one! Also, Klaus :) one of my new favorites for Christmas

At the time this movie came out, the audience was well aware of Charlie Brown, Snoopy (the dog), and the whole Peanuts gang. Also, most kids would have been culturally aware of Linus's Shepherd speech from the King James Bible version of scripture from Luke 2: 8-14. The audience would pick up on the subtext quite easily. The Christmas play didn't need much explanation because this was a common thing for those who attended a traditional American Christian church. Your reaction contrasted to some of the comments show how America has shifted culturally from the "standard Christian" model to a individual preference model.

Snoopy's always my fav. My mom was more into it than I was but I still liked it because old cartoon looks were great.

1965: "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is about to change TV just by being broadcast. First, it has a Jazz soundtrack by The Vince Guaraldi Trio, Second, real children are the voice actors. Third, It's about the over-commercialization of Christmas. Fourth, Linus reads a passage from The Bible. Fifth, there is NO laugh track, unlike most cartoons of the era. Sixth, the Peanuts characters are quite aware of "Adult Concerns." Seventh, this "crude animation" animated feature has been playing on TV somewhere/everywhere during the Christmas season ever since. Addendum: "A Charlie Brown Christmas Tree" is a real thing, even if they're plastic/vinyl instead of real.

I once had a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Obviously it’s a fake tree but it came with one red bulb. You can still buy them on Amazon.

we performed this as a play when i was in grade school; i played sally (charlie brown’s sister)! because of that, this special holds a very special place in my heart. and you’re right; the music in this one is amazing! vince guaraldi and his trio are so good and their work on this special is always part of my christmas playlists. happy holidays, nick!

Thank you soooo much Nick!!! It's not Christmas holiday without Charlie Brown!! I couldn't believe they took it off airwaves! How cruel! Yes you can get it on Apple TV but I don't have that. You made my Christmas 🎄!! It was fun watching 👀 you enjoy all the characters! I know you had to maneuver around not showing the complete video, otherwise you would get sued!! Great job!! 👍 like I said you made my Christmas! Merry Christmas to you!!🥰💜💚🧡🤩

My favorite Peanuts special! Oh, thank you so much for posting this! You should definitely look up the making of this because it was NOT an easy task back in the day, and not just because it was taboo; they didn't have a special ready yet. Also, the dog's name is Snoopy. 😂 Also, Linus, the kid with the blanket, was reciting the Nativity Story, a.k.a. the birth of Jesus who is the real reason for the season. 🎁

I saw this when it was first broadcast. Kids don't always 'get it' at first, but it grows on one. There's one thing I never noticed until it was pointed out just this year: though Linus is very attached to his security blanket, the first time he lets go of it is when he's telling the Christmas story, on the line 'Fear not'. Trivia: animator Bill Melendez was a tall, burly man, yet he provided the voice of Snoopy. He died in 2008, so when the 2015 Peanuts movie was in production, the sound department went through all the animated TV specials to choose sound clips for the film, a great tribute to Mr. Melendez.

When I was a kid, I used to love looking at Charlie brown pics in my view master. Felt like I could touch them. Loved the different shades of sky as well.

You know what? This definitely is a nice surprise of a reaction. (I'll still recommend "Arthur Christmas" by Aardman Animations, but this is definitely a good classic). Also, the part at 11:07 is part of the story of the birth of Christ AKA the Nativity AKA the Christian part of Christmas. The section Linus goes over involves the Shepherds of Bethlehem being visited by an angel bringing good tidings of the birth of Christ (aka the Savior) and letting them know where they can find the new-born child of God so they can worship him and spread his good name.

Thanks so much for covering this Christmas special, Nick! Watching the Peanuts Christmas special is an annual holiday tradition of mine, one of my favorites! I love the humor, gags, and some of the facial expressions, they get me laughing every time. The music is also memorable too. A Charlie Brown Christmas is a true delight in my overall opinion!😁🎄🎹

Growing up there were very few animated holiday shows, and they were the reason we got to stay up late a few times a year, Nostalgia is a factor for sure, but the music, yes, peanuts animation has the best music 💜

When I was Little, there were 3 television channels and it was before Cable and NO HBO and NO SHOWTIME and NO NICKALODIAN or anything of the sort. Charlie Brown was a News paper Cartoon and regular TV cartoons were on Saturdays or for an hour after school and most of the cartoons were as old as the 1940's. At that time there were not even a lot of other type of Christmas movies or they were all old or they were on Variety Show Specials and not really geared at all for kids, SO, when Charlie Brown Halloween or Thanks-Giving or Charlie Brown Christmas was shown on TV it was a real treat. THE CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS Music really first takes me back to late fall early winter nights, Soft and pleasing and inspiring of Christmas and I still feel a bit anxious for the excitement for Christmas day.

I love the kid in the green shirt and the orange shirt. The one in the green to me is doing the running man dance while the one in the orange dance is so cool too. Been watching this every Christmas since it's first air on tv. Very timeless 🎄. Also the jazz music is as cool as ever

The music in this is by the Vince guaraldi trio. A popular jazz band at the time. Vince composed all the music and wrote the famous “Linus and Lucy” that people know as the peanuts song. The song “Christmas time is here” he wrote for this special is one of my all time favorites

I feel that Charlie was upset because everybody was like gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. Just focusing on what they wanted for Christmas or what they could get out of it, rather than Jesus, love, and self-less giving.

Now that you have heard the soundtrack you will find yourself dancing in that same style as on the stage whenever you hear it. It's just a fact. The wimpy tree has become a traditional Christmas decoration for many of us, symbolizing that bringing people together to help each other is the best gift of all.
