First of all, have a great trip and enjoy the time with your family. You bloody deserve it! On the improv thing, that thing with the father you mentioned brought home to me everything I have always felt was wrong with classical teaching (not classical music, which I love). Almost all the musicians I have ever met, who started off with classical training, find it impossible to improvise, and I find that immensely sad. Apart from anything else, most "classical" composers were improvisors themselves... particularly the earlier ones. I mean, Bach was apparently a master improvisor! I've long felt that kids should have the opportunity to learn basic improvising BEFORE they start reading notes on a page. Safe and fun travels! S

ALASKA such a lucky man. "Untouched wilderness" or some such thing. I have a pretty good friend who lives up in Fairbanks. Take a look out the plane window coming in, I hear it's a religious experience.
