Hi Nick, what a great tribute to an inspirational musician.. I'm sure Roger's passing is a big loss to the NZ Jazz scene. A true Kiwi legend. Thanks for sharing.

So instrumental in so many of us getting into big bands and Jazz at high school and onwards. First heard the Big Band at Tauranga Boys College in the early 90s. Turned my whole understanding of music around. What a legacy.

Thanks, he had that effect on many people. Cheers

Hey Nick, reaching out from the UK to pass on my deepest sympathies to you, the band and Rodger’s family. I only discovered the band recently after my girlfriend and I visited NZ in April of this year, on returning to the UK I bought the albums with King Kapisi and “Plays Hone Tuwhare” and felt so inspired by the band that I have since been scratching away attempting to finish some charts I started years ago. I was looking for a way to write to Rodger to tell him how much I loved those albums when I saw the terrible news. Obviously a legend and a true inspiration to so many people. Thinking of you all and sending my very best wishes. Pete. P.S. loved your solo on “Can’t stop, won’t stop.”

He was very well known there, having toured a lot, and bought many top level artists to NZ. He played trombone and was a big band leader. I played in his band for over 10 years and he was a close friend. Cheers
