Today I review the LG 38WN95c ultra-wide monitor to decide whether or not it was worth it and if I think ultrawide curved monitors are actually any good or if dual monitors or 4k monitors are better. I mainly base my review on productivity, although I touch on ultrawide gaming which this monitor can be used for as well.

Mine is the older version with a 75Hz refresh rate and it is definitely the best monitor purchase I've ever made. After 3.5 years of heavy usage for work, the size of the monitor is perfect. My only dream upgrade is to have it with an OLED screen.

Great honest review! Were there any other 38's or 40's you considered? I'm thinking this sixe is perfect for me too but agree anything over $1500 aud is too much. I can currently get a used one for around the same as you did but still looking for other options as I also don't think 144hz is really necessary

I was looking at the Alienware 30 in ultrawide, but it was OLED and I really wanted IPS since I do so much video editing; plus the Alienware was a lot more expensive. Definitely go second hand, but I'd say make sure you can get one still with at least a years warranty. I have heard of people having issues with LG from time to time so worth covering yourself!

Thank you for the review. I have learned to embrace the USB type A 1-3ft cable for hard to reach ports. I already know people are going to say "BUT U LOSE SIGNAL INTEGRITY!" and my response is that speeds are just theoretical when talking maximums. You really have to just ask yourself does this transfer at a speed you are happy with? Does it give you access to inserting a thumb drive or a mouse/gamepad dongle? I don't care about losing 100Mb/sec when its transferring at 4Gb/sec. Thats a trade off I'm willing to make for access. Same goes for audio cables. 1ft pigtail extensions and label them.

Thanks for the review. Have been looking at alternatives for USB-C vs. TB3. Seemed to have narrowed it down to this monitor. Do you think this is worth the extra $500-600 compared to USB-C connectivity alone?
@NickKendall
@NickKendall Жыл бұрын
I can't say I know heaps about the differences, but I'm guessing TB3 will give that higher refresh rate if that's something you value. I don't think I'd notice too much if jumped down to 60hz from this at 144hz but then I don't do a lot of gaming.

Hey, thank you for the review! A quick question - the USB C on the back is a thunderbolt port. Can you still charge and connect with the monitor via the usb c? You dont need an extra hdmi or dp to be connected in order to transfer the picture? Also, what is the refresh rate you are getting on the Monitor when you MBP is connected? Are you getting 144hz? And if so, is that via USB-C? Thanks!
@NickKendall

No problem! Yep, all you need is the USB C. No extra cables required. I'm getting the full 144hz on my MBP. From time to time is seems to glitch and I only get 75, but once I disconnect and reconnect it comes good.

Hey Nick, I jut had the LG UltraWide 38WP85C, I use it mainly for editing. I am curious how do you have your display settings set up on your mac so you get true color? My last edit i noticed the colors didn't match at export. Curious if how you have your set up.

Hmm good question. Can I ask which editing software you’re using? Would it be Premiere by any chance? It actually sounds more like an export thing rather than a display thing
@MyPawesomeFrenchie
@MyPawesomeFrenchie Жыл бұрын
@@NickKendall I've been using Davinci Resolve but lately, I've been using Premier Pro. For the example I gave you, it was a video I was editing for my IG. The skin tones had more magenta in them on the screen and once I exported and airdropped it to my phone it looked it didn't look the same. Unfortunately, today there was a connectivity issue and I had to send it back. So now I'm trying to decide if I should get the same monitor or if I should upgrade to the 38WN95c. Did you have to calibrate your monitor out of the box?
@NickKendall
@NickKendall Жыл бұрын
Hmm does the export look different to the preview on the same screen? It honestly sounds like your export settings might be the culprit. Prem exports can be tricky but they’re even more tricky in Resolve I find. I export using the color space tag as DCI-P3 and the gamma tag as sRGB (from memory that is, I’m not in front of my computer right now). But I haven’t done any calibration on the monitor. I use it in the P3 mode.

He mentioned he was looking for a brighter monitor, and the 40" 5k2k is fairly dim. That's a major reason I'm not getting it. My second major reason is that MacBook Air M1 and M2s can't handle HiDPI at resolutions that large, and I use one for work. I'd like to use 5K2K native, but at 40" the PPI would make screen objects too tiny for me. I think I'm going with this 38" 3840x1600 for now. Maybe in a few years there will be some solid 5120x2160 options in the 45"-49" range, and I'll consider upgrading. GPUs should start catching up then too 😊 Edit: I got both the 38wn95c and the WUHD 40wp95c. I'm keeping the 5K2k. I do wish it were a little brighter, but man you can't beat the resolution

@@MrLaurichu It's 72hz, but I've never really used anything other than 60hz until now. Part of the reason I returned the 38wn95c was because I got a defective unit that was stuck at 75hz over displayport (144hz worked via USB-C but honestly don't need higher refresh on my Mac for work). 72hz is good enough for now, I prefer the higher resolution to higher refresh. @@MrLaurichu Not really. Apple can do pseudo HiDi, but it's not that great. Only way to really improve it is to get a monitor with a higher PPI, and unfortunately larger sizes haven't caught up due to current tech. Now that DisplayPort 2.1 is starting to be implemented, hopefully we'll see high PPI on larger screens that can also support higher refresh rates. But until then, we have to choose either high PPI or high refresh on screens >= 48" Disclaimer: I'm a Linux guy and use Apple for work. I'm also not a monitor expert. There may be better settings for you on Windows, but I have very limited experience there. On Apple I use a tool called BetterDisplay to force HiPi (high DPI) to help with my work MacBook Air

Can you use this 38" monitor as a quad screen display? I only seen two screen display. I have a 43" LG monitor from 5 years ago with native quad screen display but I have to go to the chiro often for neck/back pain and looking at alternatives. Thanks!

I believe this model only has the ability to display two source feeds at a time if that's what you're referring to? So you could have a laptop and a console plugged in and see both displayed at the same time for example.

These USB ports it has are purely for KVM and not meant for anything else hence only 2.

@@NickKendallWell for a long time I did search for the second screen for iMac and there were options for 27-32 inch 4k screens but this one will give me options as you said for 2 screens + iMac. I actually wanted to get LG 34 ultrawide but since my iMac is maxed spec with Radeon 16gbVram. and I found this LG 38 on amazon brand new for a$1499. Why not :D

Lol that stuck pixel is why you got it from the other guy, they just noticed it sooner.

haha possibly. He told me he'd had a stuck pixel on the screen previously and had it replaced. I still honestly never notice it.
@dark4o90
@dark4o90 Жыл бұрын
You're not going to get it replaced for one stuck pixel. It's a consumer grade equipment with higher allowed number of failing pixels. Only the military grade monitors are supposed to be perfect and replaced which if you can find at all is going to be probably twice or more the price

So let me ask two questions and make a statement based on my experience with Mac's Apple silicon scaling issues... 1.) How painfully small is the text at the monitor's native resolution of 3840x1600? 2.) How unpleasantly muddled is the display when you scale down to a lower resolution so text isnt so tiny? >> Dont get used Apple's poor quality scaling and accept it as normal. I run a Windows PC and an M1 Mac on the same monitor. If you look at Mac's graphics long enough, no matter how poor it is you will get used to it... until you switch back over to the Windows PC on that same monitor and realize how crisp and sharp that monitor truly is when used with a PC that can do proper scaling and graphics output. My point is: The Windows scaling and text is crisp at any resolution while the M1 Mac is dull and muddled at any resolution other than "native", which is inherently too tiny to be practical.

Hey that's super interesting about the difference between mac and pc scaling! I'd be really curious to try a pc on the monitor now. But in terms of your questions; text is perfectly legible for me at the native resolution and I have scaling all the way down to more space. I have noticed that at times text is a little blurry in some applications and not as crisp as the macbook itself, but I've never found it to interfere with my work.

Thanks for the reply @@NickKendall 🍻 I have several monitors that I run on my M1 MacMini (16GB Ram) and anything less than an over-priced 5120x2880 5k monitor is a visual compromise. However, my fix for "too small text" with a typical 4k monitor was simply to get a bigger monitor. I recently up graded from a 34 inch Dell UltraWide to a rather monstrous LG 43UN700-B flat screen 43 inch 4k monitor. That beast took care of the "too small text" problem. LoL I usually scale down one step from its native 3840x2160 to 3008x1692. I also (occasionally) use BetterDisplay by waydabber but IMHO it is not really necessary with a monitor this large. I can get the size I want without the fuzzy looking text or over-crowding when multiple apps are open.👍

PSA- You can't use PIP or PbP if you are trying to use DP and USBC. So therefore for many of us the usb-C hub is useless. Why in the world cant you split screen wit the top to connection is beyond me.

Don’t think I mentioned it; speaker quality is ok. Not amazing but not terrible. I don’t use it much though as you can’t control the monitor volume using the volume buttons on the Mac which is annoying.

It's funny how 99% of the guys show casing "Productivity setup" have some useless random youtube vide opened in half/quarter of the screen. Your productivity is 100% taking a hit if you are watching an informative video and and doing your office job at the same time.

Bro you did understand essentially nothing at all. Firstly what you see in the videos is their own yt video which they're editing/cutting in that moment and is their job at the same time. Secondly, even if they just watched a yt video it might be from some other creator who they refer to or to quote them.
