I’ve owned a Carrera S, a 992 Turbo S and now a 991.2 GT3 Touring and 993. All are great cars, but in no circumstance did the Carrera outperform the Turbo S in the corners. The turn in, grip and cornering speeds on the Turbo S are way higher and the steering feel is the same, if not better. The Touring owns all when it comes to this stuff and I get why someone might prefer a RWD, manual 992 with a more linear engine. Personally, I think the Turbo S is more fun than the PDK Carrera S. The air-cooled cars and GT cars are on another level. For me: Carrera S < Turbo S < GT3T/993

Nick, your points are all correct. What you miss, is this car is exactly what it is designed to be. The perfect Grand Touring automobile. Spend a day in a Turbo S carving the Alps or driving through the city, and you will exit feeling refreshed. Try driving a GT3, or even a Carerra T for more than an hour, and your back hurts, your ears ring, and your arms, legs, and shoulders are tired from constantly shifting. It is true that a GT3 will out corner the TTS (easily), but I have yet to see a track without a straight bit sufficient to often make up the deficit in time. Put the same tires on both cars and watch the advantage of the lighter track built car further fade away. As far as a stock Carerra walking away in the twisty bits…well I would have to see that for myself. If you are a person that grew up with an automatic transmission in your moms Vista Cruiser and have always dreamed of grinding gears like the old race car drivers of yesteryear, I can understand the fascination with shifting. However, there is nothing fast, or efficient, with gear grinding since the PDK was released. The same with loud pipes. The only people that enjoy a loud car are the ones that made it that way, and that is only if they are not subjected to the drone for more than an hour at a time. Finally, I would say that anyone could easily drive a TTS a 100 miles to the Nurburg Ring, take three laps, then drive home and be ready to do it again the next day. To do that in a Carrera T, well you could, but it would have to be someone who enjoys the punishment of the experience, rather than the comfort of luxury. Oh, BTW, the TTS would kill any other 911 (short of track focused cars) in virtually any kind of street driving (and most tracks), because it is not running on a go cart track without a straightaway.

I have 3,000 miles on a 2022 Turbo S Lightweight I custom ordered in June 2021 and received in June 2022. Solid as a bank vault Launch control entertaining as the car truly puts the power down with its AWD. Is it not as engaging as lesser Porsche models? I would imagine .My McLaren 600 LT feels so nimble /lithe/sporty in comparison. I have the carbon bucket seats Alcantara steering wheel and bits plus carbon roof and mirrors all of which I like and all make the car a visually more appealing and sporty feeling to me personally as I have decades of exotic car ownership after getting away from boring (styling wise)P cars. So the TS is an awesome piece of engineering perfection that can be engaging when driven fast on a track or in the mountains/canyons The more I drive the TS the more I like it . Nevertheless I agree there are certainly more engaging / fun to drive / sporty choices /way less expensive choices out there

In the smoky mountains, on some of the curviest roads on the earth, literally, Turbos dominate. They're so capable in the corners and explosive in the straights that nothing can really keep up. I can't speak to the fun factor, I've never driven one. But Nick will also tell you that manuals are more fun. On the twistiest roads in the smoky mountains the PDK is honestly a lot of fun. You're constantly, and I mean constantly, shifting between 2nd and 3rd. The paddles make that a lot of fun. I'd say the guys/gals who drive in the mountains with us are split 50/50 on which transmission they prefer. But you won't find anyone there claim the Turbo is not fun. My guess, it's not fun going straight

Wash your mouth out Nick. The Turbo S is the king of 911's and sets the benchmark for the rest if the 911 range, not to mention every other sports car. It's being doing this for the last 4 decades. I'd argue that 4wd and PDK enhance the 911 Turbo S way more than they detract from perceived "feel" which is arguably quite engineered "feel" in most modern cars anyway. And every lesser model Carrera makes me want for more grunt. And let's ditch the manual gearbox snobbery. Sure in the past they delivered a little more engagement but Porsches manuals really aren't THAT nice and their PDK is simply the best 'box in the world. Yes a GT3 is more thrilling on the track, as it should be, but the Turbo S is simply monumental. I have one and will be buried with it.

Everything Nick says in the video is pretty spot on. Compared to the other normal 992.1s in the line-up, the Turbo S feels heavy, and below 7/10ths or 8/10ths it feels just like a normal car. It can be great for grand touring and is noticeably quieter and more refined than the main 992 line-up. With the 930 leather package and other standard upgrades it feels very luxurious. Closer to the limit, beast mode comes out, but that almost never happens. Also there is significant turbo / power lag that is not present in the main 992 line-up. For day to day driving it is very nice and comfortable, and it is very practical (for a supercar). But, at the end of day though it rather boring to drive day to day especially compared to the other 992s, the power lag gets annoying, and the extra weight out back is not wanted and can certainly be felt. If you want a sporty feeling and engaging car, the 992 Turbo S is not it.

I'd disagree that the Turbo S is what most 911 owners lust after. Retired, paunchy, balding dentists 60+ on their 3rd marriage, maybe. Those who don't need Viagra for a stiffy would much prefer a GT3 Touring IMO.
@Uhmph2 жыл бұрын
Im none of those things. Also disagree that we’d all want a GT3. Such a randomly presumptuous comment.

Ours handles incredibly. No matter how hard you try to push through or out of a corner, it grips and digs its claws into the road. Ive actually tried to get it to get squirmy, and it wont because the car knows exactly what you want to do next, and it helps you do it. We threw an Akrapovic exhaust on ours, and its one of the loudest cars in the entire area.
@neilbradley2 жыл бұрын
I suspect that most drivers don't drive it AWD. We have a V10 R8, the Turbo S, two AWD track cars, a Ford Transit, (used to own an X5), etc.... and yeah, the key to it is the throttle for AWD vehicles.

That is the whole point… it handles “too well” and is thus boring, think that was his point… if you want to go fast without drama then yes, you got the right car…

@@pezzu73628 Lol. Well, have you driven one? No matter how much grip its got, theres drama when you’re going too quick around any corner. You might feel more confident, but its not like it turns into a calm light breezy ride when you’re doin 90 around a turn. The car helps, but you’re still fully responsible for reacting.

@@992turbos 100%. I drive mine like a slot car. Even 90 degree corners can be taken without braking on most lower-speed streets and roads. Nothing like just having no fear, crank the wheel in and if you get a little slip then it's all the better. Then rail out of them with the rear of the car fighting for grip and sometimes getting a bit tail-first. It's all in your skill and comfort level, these things come alive if you want them to or you can cruise in them like a grocery getter. You HAVE THE CHOICE. That's what detractors miss. It's a Jeckyll/Hyde car.

The reason the Turbo S doesn't come in stick is because it would be a second slower to 60. I used to only drive manuals, but once I drove my friend's Turbo S, I had to get a PDK on my Targa 4 GTS....
@Uhmph2 жыл бұрын
They don’t come in stick because there’s no manual clutch that can handle 800NM of stress. BMW removed the manual from the G8X M3/M4 Comp version for this reason.

I completely disagree with your negatives on the Turbo S. As one who owns a fast, manual transmission, rear wheel drive 911, I always find myself yearning for AWD and PDK when I am driving the car hard. One just cannot shift a manual fast enough when a car is very fast. AWD prevents oversteer from too much throttle in corners, which can be very alarming. Then there is always the concern with a manual of an erroneous down shift blowing the engine. I personally find needing a diaper for hard driving hardly a pro. I will take the PDK and AWD any day over the alternative.

I had one of these and spun out a couple times. Once was taking an exit ramp (a little too fast obviously) in the winter and the back end came out. 2nd time was on the highway, it started to poor rain and I spun out. Thank God it was late at night with not much traffic. So, yeah the back end is heavy and it does compromise the handling but it's also a pretty dam good highway cruiser amd looks out of this world. But now I drive a gt3 manual and I would want to add another turbo S to the garage

Nick, Love you brother. Long time fan.But, as is often the case, you are wrong. Again. I kid, you're only wrong sometimes. EVO (a rather large respected publication) tracked a model year 2015 991.1 Turbo S around Anglesey circuit (notoriously short and twisty) in 1:13.6 sec in their "Leaderboard" youtube series. Leaderboard is where EVO take all the cars, as sold, and run them all on the same track to give some relative, albeit imperfect, performance context in a "controlled" environment. 1:13.6 is 4.2 sec faster than a 991.1 Carrera. 3.3 sec faster than a GT-R, 0.06 sec faster than the mighty 458 Speciale and the EXCAT same time a 991.2 GT3RS lapped Anglesey. As I am sure its not strange feeling for you to be humbled, feel free to search KZbin for "Porsche 911 Turbo S | evo LEADERBOARD" and bring a fork for a large helping of pie. And as in typical 911 fashion the 992 is even faster than the its predecessor. Heavy? yes, yet faster despite it. Again, love the channel.
