1. You have been fooled to believe that a German is epitome of success. 2. You have over paid. 3. You will never use the potential of your over engineered car. 4. Your car is not as quick as a Tesla P100D's 0 to 60 time i2.2 sec. 5. Porsche is boring.

1. Are you saying I should become a German to become successful? My German is poor but love German bread so who knows? 2. I did over pay for my car, I also over paid for my shoes, it was enjoyable, I will do it again. 3. The potential I am hoping to achieve is to transport my dog to the park at a moderate speed every day. 4. My car is not as fast as a lot of cars, I can tell you this keeps me up at night but I hope to put some more stickers and stripes on it which will make it go faster. 5. This one is my favorite, I can just see you getting to #5 and running out of ideas so you anger typed 'Porsche is boring' then sat back and thought 'that will show him!' Nice!

HAHA Nick i just did a massive LOL watching you run after the car. Your right though. I found this confusing at first. I still get confused, i just push/pull it until i head the noise.
@snark9076 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you just need a new mental model. I use the mental model of the old fashioned parking brake pedal. You push it in with your foot to set it. You pop it back out to release it.
@Bagger19786 жыл бұрын
That is where I believe they came up with the concept and the similarities in release position instead of the center console like other cars. All cars I've driven with a foot parking brake, you always pull on a release handle from that same area of the dash. Seems pretty straight forward concept to me.

I have one suggestion to add to help reduce bolster wear when you're getting OUT of the car, which is also a problem. Because the seats are so low and so deep, it's actually pretty easy to put your left hand on the bottom door sill and lift yourself up and forward slightly to reduce dragging yourself across both the bottom and side bolsters. I've used this technique with my prior 911 and another sports car with good results.

Nick, have a look at the CTEK line of battery maintaners. They have an optional 'comfort connect' adapter that plugs directly into one of the 12V ports so you don't have to clip directly to the battery. Using one on my 981 to keep the battery alive during the cold Michigan months and it works like a champ.
@NickMurray7 жыл бұрын
Yes great tip. Porsche also sell a similar product at only $120 I believe, might even be the same thing.
@cliess7 жыл бұрын
Yep, CTEK is the OEM for Porsche. Naturally, the Porsche-branded one is quite a bit more -- I got mine from eBay for around $80 shipped that came with several adapters and a storage bag.
@FishFind30007 жыл бұрын
Craig Liess that charger only works if the wiring is done a specific way otherwise it won't charge.

AFAIK (and per the documentation, and tons of homework) there is no "wiring" that has to be done to accommodate the comfort connect adapter -- it is plug + play.

I have a 981 Boxster and I can confirm that the e-brake switch is the most stupid thing ever made, it always takes me a couple of pushes and pulls to engage it because it just works the opposite as it should be! The Handbrake System is similar to Mercedes. This comes from the older Mercedes which had a manual handbrake, tightened by pushing a pedal left beside the clutch. To unlock the handbrake you had to pull a handle left beside the steering wheel.
@lonestranger7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. It's not just Mercedes, but most (every?) vehicle with a foot-actuated parking brake releases this way. Foot-actuated parking brakes are very common on American trucks, vans, SUVs, and cars that might be equipped with a full or split bench seat, e.g. :www.ford-taurus.org/taurusinfo/Features/P-brake.jpg Having never driven a vehicle with an electronic parking brake, I'd expect to pull the handle to release it, especially if it was located on the dash below steering column. With the console-mounted switches, pulling up to engage it makes more sense because that's how handbrakes operate.
@paullincoln7 жыл бұрын
Actually whilst Mercs with foot operated parking brakes use a pulling motion on the hand release handle, the older Mercs like W115 and W123 (if memory serves me right) are full hand operated. Engagement is by hand pulling a handle and release is twist and push. But its ok... whatever 911 dishes out... i'll take
@vodkatron6 жыл бұрын
Also this way on newer Volvos, maybe it's common in european cars? Seems logical way to me - you put brake "on" by pushing it and releasing pulling it "off"?.

Nick, I've watched several of your videos. I love your self-deprecating humor, communication style and knowledge of the Porsche product. Well done!
@julianjacobs59827 жыл бұрын
Nick, there's a very good reason why dash mounted handbrakes are pushed for ON and pulled for OFF (same as in Mercs). I got out out of my Merc and accidentally knocked the handbrake with my foot. If the handbrake worked in the reverse way, it would have turned off and the car would have rolled away just as I was getting out.

Brilliant upload Nick, yes worse still is my Wife's Macan handbrake works reverse to 911 & Boxster (in other words pull up for park and push down for release)! Drives me mad when going from car to car! There's loads of these quirks. For example: if for what ever reason (while in drive) you open the drivers door (even with foot on the brake) the handbrake is automatically applied which is highly annoying especially if you don't have seatbelt on, for example reverse manoeuvring in the garage! Finally, UK cars don't have an inside front trunk release ...... which is odd! Look forward to the video ref. Apple car play and PCM annoyances! I put two old seat cushions in my garage aeons ago. Now I just drive up & onto them (front wheels only!). The cushions prevent the front tires from 'flat spotting'. On my 993... I spent an afternoon 'snaking' individual lengths of nylon string to both trunk & hood latches. The spring tension on those latches is actually quite strong so a *lot* of pull force, devoid of leverage, is needed. I now have individual backups to opening my trunk & hood if the cables etc. ever fail. FWIW, that 'spare battery & cables to a micro connector' workaround is for the birds.

Good stuff Nick. As the owner of a 16 Porsche Cayman manual I can attest that the Cayman also has the "thump" when backing up at full lock. I live in California so its not as apparent when backing up with a freezing cold, firm tire upon startup.

Nick, the reason you pull to release the parking brake: that comes from old days when you pushed the parking brake foot pedal and you released by pulling that same leaver, they followed the same system/style; so to engage you push and pull to release. after finding that out myself, i stopped getting confused anymore.

You actually brought up great points. Here are my thoughts about your points since I drive a daily Boxster and Cayman: 1. The opposite direction of the electric e-brake took some time to get used to, but it's become second nature now. To avoid my car sliding backwards, I just developed the good habit of putting my gear into park and then putting my e-brake on before getting out all the time. 2. Even before getting these cars, I actually asked myself what I'd do if the battery went dead since some of my older cars have dead batteries. I looked it up and realized it would be unfortunate to have that happen in a Porsche and not have access to the battery. So I bought a portable battery and jumper cable kit on Amazon.com. I currently have the pack behind the driver's seat in case I need it. 3. There are no rear seats in the Boxster or Cayman... 4. I subconsciously worry about wearing the side bolsters of my seats, so I tend to get in carefully like you do. I'm glad I'm not the only one that worried about this. 5. This noise scared me the first time I drove these cars. For the record, it doesn't have to be East Coast cold, it could be California cold and this will still happen. I enjoy your vlogs so keep it up!

True, it does happen more with cold weather but I'm in Texas and all it takes is a 40* morning and even with it garaged it still happens. I had another unusual, but common, Porsche problem with the high oil level warning light that will come on apparently for us low mileage commuters. Thanks Nick, really helpful tips. As a current 993 CS owner, there is a manual release to open the hood/bonnet to access the battery etc. On the 991 this would have to be one of the dumbest designs when one has a flat battery. Porsche must change this design on the upcoming 992. Umm.....how about a manual release design, good idea.....da.

It's been like that since the 996 moved from mechancal release to electronic. It's a bit cumbersome, but not catastrophic. You need a boost, ok, power at the fusebox first, open the engine lid, power the car to start.

Great video. Forgetting to engage the parking brake or not engaging it correctly on the manual Porsche cars is very common problem, and watching your video brings back few horror moments. My house is located on steep hill, and I own 3 manual Porsches & 4 PdK Porsche's, and I recall running after my cars on several occasions trying to catch them as they roll back down this steep hill. Scary moments.....The problem gets even more complicated as the standard for Porsche to engage the parking brakes is different between various Porsche cars. For 911, Caymans, Boxsters the e-brake is located vertically below the ignition and as you pointed out you must push it inwards to engage the parking brakes and according to Porsche they claim since it is located close enough to the pedals it is treated as a foot brake which is engaged by pushing your foot to engage it. On Macans, Cayennes the E-Brake is located horizontally on the console below PDK lever and you must pull on it to engage it which is opposite of 911 ebrake, but matches most other cars, and the idea here since it is located next to you it is treated as a hand brake and hand brake are engaged by pulling upwards. After complaining to Porsche about why different standards and how confusing it is, I was educated about their philosophy and why they have 2 different standards for these ebrakes. So now when I am in a 911, cayman or Boxster i train my mind to think it is a foot brake and I must push it in like a foot brake to engage it and when I am in a Macan or Cayenne I tell myself I have a hand brake and I must pull it upwards to engage it. Hope this helps explain the wisdoms of Porsche.

Good video, thank you! I know exactly what you mean and I had the problem as well but: The handbrake isn’t the other way round. All cars with the switch in the center console imitate the manual hand brake you have to pull in order to lock it. Porsche has another switch position, which is imitating the manual (foot) hand brakes in Mercedes or Chevrolet’s or many others where you have to push the foot pedal to lock the brake and pull the lever to losen it. Totally intuitive if you have the right mental model :)

Hey Nicolas, have you ever heard of a trickle charger battery tender for your Porsche? So you don't have to put the huge clamps in your fuse box? And I always put a brick behind the rear wheel of a manual car as the "old fashioned" way of preventing manual cars from rolling away. Sometimes the old fashioned way works better.

The car battery thing with the hod is a brilliant design detail, one to be discussed for ages. A millennial engineer's deed for sure. Also, the seats wearing out in 3 days? We love you Nick for telling us these lovely details :)

The pups really enjoyed your dash (0-60 in 2secs). That look of do it again, do it again was priceless... by the way the electronic ebrakes are the pits. I have to look at my dashboard to make sure the brake is are on.

Lol battery issue is funny. I would just suggest a mini lithium-ion starter kit from Amazon. They are quite compact and can fit behind your seat on the floor. The leads are also pretty small. I'm not sure if speaker wire is rated for jumping the car haha.

Hey Nick, I have a manual M4 and I always leave the car in gear when parking. This will prevent the car from rolling if you forget to put the parking brake on.

so it's the cold tires that were making the thumping noise. good thing I saw this video, I was planning on taking my 991.1 in for that noise. Thx Nick.

On the topic of the parking break, unlike the other car you showed as an example, the lever in the 991is designed after those vehicles that had (and some still have) a pedal on the far left side that you depress to engage the break; those have a lever like the one on the 991 that you pull, to release the break. So, it is a design consistent with the previous mechanical design for its location, just like the other car example you showed is consistent with the pervious mechanical design for its location.

My 914 (1974) had the any-weather bump while making slow hard left/right turns amoung other issues. You’ve motivated my to seek out a real new-used CPO Porsche 2013 -2015 (65-80k). Ive watched most of your vids which are put together quite well! Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

The issue with the thump on the front tires when backing up is very annoying. I get it on my 991 on summer tires (I live in San Diego). After watching your video, I realize that it only does it when the tires are cold (like when talking it pout of the garage in the morning).

Great idea for a video series. Have you found with the release sensor in the bonnet (which allows you to simply hold your hand over an area of the front bumper to open it) when you wash the car it will open it without meaning for it to be triggered? On my 991.1 it happens when spraying the hood and I'm not standing right over the spot. Of course it means you leave the key out of your pocket and away from the car but that's hard to do if you are at a spray wash. I suppose you can just leave the key in the car and it won't trigger it as a safety precaution? I've never tried.

The parking brake on the dash works like that, even in old Mercedes had the E brake activated by pressing a pedal (near or where the dead pedal is) and released by pulling a lever on the dash ( the same {in form and shape, but it was mechanical} as the one in your Porsche)

7:42 that happens on my Cayman as well!! It took me a while to figure out what was happening All of these are really relevant to Caymans as noted in the title, so thanks a lot, Nick! Keep it up :)

Just FYI, the parking brake design is the same as old American pickup trucks. There was a pedal to push down to set it, but you pull the little lever at the bottom left to release it.

yeah people wouldn't want to put the positive onto their fusebox, but i'm more curious on what am i supposed to clamp onto with the ground side????
