WANNA REVIEW THE BEST ELECTRIC GUITAR SOLO EVER? - I'm not kidding. Uli Jon Roth is the #1 guitarist on Earth, his solo work is a mind f¨ck, and the most amazing solo that will ever be written is a song called "I'll be There" from the Electric Sun (Uli Solo) album "Beyond the Astral Skies". A deep cut for sure. The song is like 10% intro, followed by the most amazing guitar solo ever. The sound, the build, the changes, the nuance, the structure. A few years ago at a gig in Redding, CA, I had the honor of telling Uli in person that this was the best solo ever. "To be clear, Uli, I don't mean your best solo ever, I mean the best solo ever, by anyone." He seemed moved, thanked me deeply, and said he worked very hard on that solo. Prepare to have your mind plastered against the back wall of your rock room.

Everybody here's dumping on post Uli era Scorps and that's BS. They didn't go full on Pop until Savage Amusement which was mid to late 80's. Prior to that they released 4 really good albums, including the multi-platinum hit Love at First Sting, They still rocked in early 80's, just not as complex as Uli era Scorps.

To a western ear the solo and the groove may sound "Arabic" (Phrygian mode always sounds "Arabic") but in reality this is also a staple of Greek music as well. Greeks play Phrygian mode differently from Arabs and the Sails of Charon is definitely built upon the Greek style rather than the Arabic which is reinforced by both the fact that the song in inspired loosely by Greek mythology as well as the fact that since the 1960s Germany was host to a large Greek community and the Scorpions definitely were listening to Greek music, in vogue back then. The way Uli shreds here is actually very reminiscent of Greek bouzouki players. In fact you can transpose the solo to bouzouki and you would not even know it was written by a German hard rock band known as Scorpions. For the record, Scorpions were extremely popular in Greece (they were all over Europe but Greece even more so) and Klaus has stated that one of their favourite countries to play is definitely Greece.

I love that you did this one! It's one of my favorites. The whole album is great and has some interesting variation. My favourite Scorpions albums are probably this one (Taken By Force) and the next one called "Lovedrive". This is the last album by the "1970's Scorpions" and Lovedrive is the first of the "New Scorpions" without Uli Jon Roth. They are great songwriters and Klaus Meine is one of the best singers of all time. They are quite famous for their ballads and for a good reason. They really know how to write such songs. This album has a song called "Born to Touch Your Feelings" and Lovedrive has "Holiday" for example. "Holiday" has one of the best intros with an acoustic guitar solo. I recently went and listened to that on Spotify and the new remastered version sounded much worse than the original though. All the real warmth of the original was gone and everything sounded thin and more trebly. I'm not a fan of some of the remasters but this was much worse than usual. Oh well, just wanted to share my frustration I guess. :-) You talked about Yngwie J. Malmsteen and I'd also like to share some words about him. He was outstanding especially in his early years. Most of the people hadn't heard anything like that before. He wrote some fantastic songs as well. I like the first three or four albums a lot. He knew how to write some great riffs and melodic neoclassical themes, which sounded very good especially when played fast. As we know, he wasn't the first neoclassical metal guitarist but you could say that he perfected the genre. Many people started to repeat those things later including himself. Sails of Charon was an important song for him but I'd also like to mention at least one other song. It's "Gates of Babylon" by Rainbow (which had Ritchie Blackmore on guitar of course). There are parts in that song's middle section that have clearly inspired his music. Uli Jon Roth is a fantastic guitar player. He didn't just inspire Yngwie Malmsteen but many others as well. At least the members of Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Testament have been praising him in some of their interviews. Those are some of the most influential thrash metal bands and favorites of many people. it's always nice to know what has influenced our own favorite bands. So, sharing this music is important. I'm so glad you're doing this. Take care and have a fantastic weekend!

5:30 it's from that minor second interval. Or major 7th I guess, depending on how you're looking at it. But those two major chords are only a semi tone away from each other. If you start the harmonic minor scale on the dominant chord (5th chord of the scale) and if you tonicize that chord as your root chord, then you are officially playing the Phrygian Dominant scale. This song takes advantage of that little bit of music theory, and it gives it that vibe she is describing. Minor second = super dope sound. lol
