Magnum were a cracking band. I roadied for them once, in the mid-80s. "Marauder" is one of the best live albums of all time.

Well, moment of nostalgia: 30 years ago Magnum was my older brother's favorite band, he went to see them for their first concert outside Great Britain, in Gent in Belgium. He listened to that all the time and because I was there, I kind of grew up with that music. When I left home I became interested in other styles and stopped listening to hard rock, heavy metal and prog. Many years later, around 2016/2017 I would say, I was playing with my band in Holland at the Patronaat in Harlem, and we were playing in the small concert hall. Before the concert, we ate at the catering next to the large concert hall in which a group was already playing, what was my surprise to hear a Magnum song, I said to myself "Incredible, this group has did a cover of a Magnum song!", and then the next song I was like "Amazing, they're playing two magnum covers in a row!!!" before understanding that it was Magnum themselves, it took me so long to understand because I never would have imagined that the group still existed... And now I learn that it lasted until 2024! It's impressive! Hi from France.

Magnum was my favorite rock band besides Marillion between 1983-2005. I have their first single in promo edition from 1975 and the usa album edition of Kingdom of Madness from 1978. Of course i have all the regular and special records including picture discs. I have seen them 5 times in the 90's. Well...enough bragging 😄🤘

They were at the Reading rock festival on saturday the 27th August 1983, the same day as Marillion. I was there but don't remember Magnum at all although I do remember Marillion were as awful as I expected them to be, so bad that both me and my brother were so bored we left the arena and missed Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble who took over the headline spot due to Black Sabbath not appearing as the singer for them at the time, Ian Gillan, had voice problems. It's not that I don't like prog as both Pallas and Pendragon were excellent the day before, but Marillion really suck, and I mean really, really suck, a second rate pretentious Genesis and that's being kinder than I want to be.

One of my all time favourite bands - they were my first proper gig in 1986, and I saw them several times after that. They released their last album earlier this year, just days after their guitarist and sole songwriter, Tony Clarkin, passed away. Kingdom of Madness was the first album of theirs that I heard. An amazing discography.

I'm lucky to have seen Magnum live many times. Great memories. You can sense their potential in this early track. They achieved so much musically, carving their own path, ignoring fashion and trends. Obviously they peaked with Storyteller's Night, but many other great albums and tracks.

I remember an interview with Tony Clarkin describing how they rode out the punk and new wave music (which I lived through and enjoyed), how they just carried on making what they liked to do.

I like the 70s, 80s. the 2000s, and the 2020s. My least favorite eras were the 90s and the 2010s. They split between 1994 and 2002. However, Bob Catley and Tony Clarkin continued as Hard Rain. Hard Rain released two albums. The Avantasia collaborations with Bob Catley inspired them to restart Magnum again.

I missed out on Magnum as I was already in SA when this album was released. So this was my first listen and it was great. I will certainly listen to more from them. Thanks Narvik. BTW Nick, when I had my CD store in Cape Town I displayed the CD cases and stored the discs separately, so customers could listen to the album on one of four listening stations before they bought it. I could never understand why some of my competition would not do that, but I didn't mind, it was good for business.

Their sound changed in the 80s to Pomp Rock (similar to Journey. Survivor etc). During the 90s they switched to Hard Rock. They returned to Pomp Rock after the 90s, but with heavier guitars.

Bought this album not long after release (I was18), having heard it on a rock show on local radio in Birmingham England. Quite liked it but never bought another one. I guess it just wasn't the type of music that was fashionable any more in the UK in the late seventies. Good to hear it again though . Thanks!

Wow what kinda music was that ? I really enjoyed that. I’d listen to this any day over boring Floyd and overrated Rush - it was awesome its sounded like a tv show or action movie song it sounded super old but much better than most the 80’s era sounds! Loved it ❤

I never considered Magnum truly Prog, but, like Styx, rock with a few Prog touches. I got their first album when it cam out in 78, and saw them live supporting Whitesnake the following year. On A Storyteller's Night is considered their best album. Sadly their songwriter/guitarist, Tony Clarkin, passed away recently, so the band is no more

Saw them live in the early 80s, listened to several of their albums but never really got into them, always came across as a pale shadow of the Fish era Marillion.

Tony Clarkin was an excellent songwriter, and Bob Catley had a great voice. Magnum were never quite the right band at the right time, prog instead of punk, pomp instead of prog, not pretty enough for the American market. Wings of Heaven was the peak of their success, but there's a lot of good music to catch up on.
