See how Nick (🇩🇪) shows Lex (🇺🇸/🇲🇽) some obscure version of Dream Theater that was released in sort of an "experimental" way (logo change and all!). Lex was VERY SURPRISED!

Kevin Moore left the band after the recording of Awake. That's actually Derek Sherinian on keyboards for this album. Derek and Mike Portnoy formed a band a few years ago called Sons of Apollo which I highly recommend. Definitely check out the track "God of the Sun" from their first release Psychotic Symphony.

I also recommend all of Kevin Moore’s other project…OSI! First 2 albums have Mike Portnoy on drums….albums 3 and 4 have the legendary Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief on drums! And I gotta say, Kevin Moore’s singing voice is awesome and very unique! Check that stuff out….all of it!

Underrated DT album. Besides them trying to change their sound for the label, the Sherinian influence makes it unique, with his signature keyboard sound. The whole album has an "organic" vibe to it, whether it's the album they actually wanted to make or not.

Completely agree. I've been a DT fan since '92. I am in the minority by admitting this album is in the top half of their discography for me. FII gets bashed way too much by fans and I get that it's not their typical record. But that also makes it unique. I think it's a little more "accessible" than other albums. I love the guest spot by Pinnick. Awake is actually my least favorite Dream Theater album. So when Falling Into Infinity was released, I was excited to hear what the band was currently offering.

Agree with you both. FII its unfairly criticized by DT fans. Sherinian brings unique elements to the band. His work particulary in hells kitchen, lines and trial of tears is flawless. I love the groovie side of lines in the sand, and I really miss it in the Mangini era, where i feel that its all more machanical (especially mangini and rudess). The drumming on this particular track its on the spot, and petrucci’s solo is my personal favourite. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱

One of my favorite moments in the DT timeline…first time I met the band after the show. Then on the 6 degrees tour…saw them twice but the second date was in Hollywood. We followed them after Phoenix show. Saw them at Greek Theater. They co headlined with Joe Satriani….. but the best surprise was KingsX opened! So they did Lines in the Sand and had dUg sing with them on this…..so so amazing! KingX is also one of my all time favorites. Holy cow can they groove!

There was a lot of record label meddling on this album. "Just Let Me Breathe" is literally them talking about/to the label and the record industry at large. "You Not Me" was basically a song the label had (re)written FOR them for marketing. It's amazing that they still managed to put out some good stuff on this album despite all that. I still tear up at "Take Away My Pain," and of course "Hollow Years" is still a hit when they bust it out live. And "Lines in the Sand" remains my favorite Dream Theater song, to this day. 7:00 Nick mentions the different keyboard style. That's Derek Sherinian, folks. Only around for an album and a half (this and _Change of Seasons_ were his two releases with the band) but he's still got a great style. I think he also wrote a decent number of the parts on Metropolis 2, though he didn't play on the album. (Rudess mentions that most of his parts were written before he joined the band).

Liked this release when it came out .. it sounds the way it does because of label interference that almost made them stop making music .. this is the last release they didn’t self produce I think. All releases after this one they have had total creative control over their music. And what was their first sled produced record? A little album called Metropolis Part 2. Thanks for the reaction ! Falling Into Infinity is actually one of my favorite DT albums. Definitely in the top half of their discography for me. I love the fact it's more accessible. And knowing there was turmoil behind the scenes is simply a testament that this band can make great music even amidst strife. Awake is my least favorite album from the band and I was still reeling from the bad taste that Awake had left me with. So when it was released, I was excited to hear what FII had to offer. I'm a huge King's X fan so the fact that Doug Pinnick is featured on Lines In The Sand is an added bonus. As for the Dream Theater logo being removed, I've heard the guys in interviews say that was due to the cover art designer who wasn't a fan of band logos. It's unfortunate this album doesn't have the classic DT logo but in my opinion, one of the few flaws.

Mike Portnoy has stated that the guy they hired to do the cover art would only do it if he didn't have to use their regular logo. He wanted total control to do what he wanted. I guess he had been a big deal doing classic album covers in the 70's, or something, so they reluctantly agreed. I still enjoy this album very much even if it wasn't how the band wanted it to be. It strikes me as VERY weird that Storm could not just take the master pdf. of the logo (yes, there was photoshop then ;) and just super-impose it over his art. I mean, he did it "by hand" with YES "Tormato" and "Going for the One". Plus, they (the band) could have just taken the art, and had DT's art director just place the logo over it (sneaky sneaky).

Hehe! Nick, singing along with the guest "chorus" vocals and not search out for "Kings X"? That is 1 of 3 vocalists and bassist Doug "dUg" Pinnick. I'm going to "help" with that soon, so stay tuned NickNLex ;). But note Lex, that was LaBrie all the way through the song, dUg just sang a few words in the chorus. "Hells Kitchen" is gorgeous, I loved that right off the bat. I think Lines in the Sand gets a lot of its inspiration and "groove" from Kings X, which they took on tour in different parts of the U.S.. Note too; DT loves Pink Floyd, and they performed "Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety. After: When Dream and Day Unite (their debut), Images and Words, Awake, and being fully engrossed by their music since that debut (on "Lp"), I was already a huge fan, and got to see them finally on the Awake Tour, (and each tour during the Portnoy era). There was a momentum with DT that started to feel lost, after awhile many of us at that time were wondering when the next DT album was coming out (no internet for a lot of people in 1996-97). When it finally came . . . I can remember a few of us DT fans were a bit _disappointed_ with this album at 1st - as their 3 previous albums started with a BANG, and as a Brazilian co-worker at Tower Records said; "This one starts off: weeORweeOweerORweer" other than Awake where Mike just hits you in the face with his drums!" (and the whole story of the album art/logo as explained by Dennis Moore and others). This album had to grow on me, but these 2 tracks, and "Take Away the Pain" (that one hits close to home), "Trial of Tears", and "New Millennium" (the opener, finally grew on me), and the few "tracks" that really showed their skills as "song" writers, and holding-back the virtuoso side a bit, much like the few tracks on the previous 2 albums. Here's more info of the album and the idea for a "double album": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falling_into_Infinity Also more about the contentious relationship they were having with Elektra execs, where they almost threw in the towel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpXYiaeKaMqXoqs I think in many aspects; Falling into Infinity and "Images and Words" are the same timbre/tone, closer to Progressive "Rock", but IaW is a bit heavier on a few tracks and the stronger album as a whole. The keyboardist "Derek Sherenian" who replaced (the great!) Kevin Moore, also made his debut on the Ep "Change of Seasons" (before Infinity) which ALL of us want you to react to, he was more influenced by the "guitar", especially Zakk Wylde as he has said in interviews. He also had side-bands after DT; Platypus/Jelly Jam with Ty Tabor, guitarist/vocalist from Kings X, with John Myung on Bass (DT) and Rod Morgenstein on drums (Dixie Dregs, Winger), Planet X with Tony MacAlpine on guitar, and is now with "Sons of Apollo" with Mike Portnoy. Mike is a beast, and I personally LOVE how he uses various cymbals, especially with DT. Also, one of the Bonus tracks from the Japanese edition: "Speak to Me" is a MUST see/hear "Live", which is 20 times better than the studio version. It also shows that they could focus on shorter _songs_ and hold back the virtuosic gymnastics (which they have done on MANY songs). Its a beautiful track that I hope you can react to as well. - More more more NickNLex . . . but one day . . . ONE day, the Fathers of Prog Metal; *Fates Warning* ;).

It was awesome. they played songs from the latest album, Distance Over Time then the whole Metropolis Part 2, Scenes from a Memory. It was so good. I could feel the drums pound in my head, giving me a headache and heart, also just to sing along with Scene Five- Through Her Eyes and Scene 8- The Spirit Carries On, I was in heaven, literally. You should react to those songs. They are beautiful. I see you react to Scene 6, that's nice. Not sure if you reacted to any others from that album. It's all good. Love you guys, You have this chemistry together. You should also react to Illumination Theory, it's an epically long song, but worth it. Yes, it is different than how they sound now and in recent years.

The record company wanted to make them more "radio friendly" on this album. For lack of better term, a lot of people have said this record was "dumbed down" for that purpose. So, yes you are very correct- there is something different about this record. Portnoy didn't want to do this- It caused a lot of conflict in the band. I bought it brand new when it came out, and right upon putting into my cars CD player on the way home, I noticed right there. Would love to hear some Winery Dogs too!!

The combination of different genres, the polyrhythmic and the transitions remind me of Gentle Giant. But the style is unique.

Can't believe they kept 'The Way It Used To Be' off this album. I also preferred the alternate version of 'You Not Me' to the album version but, this was during a time when labels told every band DON'T do what made you successful. 🤔🤔🤔🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Take away my pain und Anna Lee, lt. New Millenium, Burning my Soul … Das Ergebnis : Scenes from a Memory … Kommentar überflüssig. Und deswegen fristet die Falling into Infinity in meiner Sammlung ein "Stiefkinddasein"... bin mal gespannt was bei euch als nächstes von DT kommt.

I love this album in that it is not metal indeed. I wish they could do more of this kind, parallel to metal stuff. Prog is always nice, no matter what flavor (check out Thank You Scientist, for example). In this album another great on is New Millenium. The middle part is fantastic! You have to listen each time and focus on a single instrument

Criminally underrated song(s), Lines in the Sand is my favourite Dream Theater song and one of my favourite songs of all time in general. I think a lot of fans simply don't like Falling Into Infinity because Portnoy has been so overly negative about it in the past that the fans feel they should feel negatively about it too. It's worth remembering that Portnoy was struggling with his own demons at the time and that may have coloured his perception of the production process, and it doesn't seem the other band members dislike the album as much as he does. It's still a fantastic album, and not just "more of the same" as you get from so many bands when they get a few albums into their careers, and I'm grateful it is so different to anything they made before it and after it. To me, none of the songs that were cut(apart from Raise The Knife) would really have added that much to the album, although most of the songs that were cut were more simplistic "poppy" songs, which I personally always enjoy because they keep things fresh and interesting throughout a long double album, but they would not have changed the tone of the album. Portnoy also writes in the liner notes for the demo disc how Kevin Shirley and others outside the band members changed some of the songs on the final version of the album, but when it comes to Lines in the Sand for example, I much prefer the "Kevin Shirley version" to the original demo version. I really feel some of it is just "hate for hatred's sake"(to quote a line from Lines in the Sand) because the record label situation was so negative for them at the time. And this is all coming from someone who thinks Mike Portnoy is the greatest drummer of all time and does not like many Dream Theater songs from the post-Portnoy era(not Mangini's fault, I loved his drumming on LaBrie's solo albums).

Ok Nick n Lex... I have now returned once more to congratulate you on a remarkable reaction. Nick, you can tell that you knew the song very well, and must have impressed into your mind very solid. That's a good thing. Anyone that has ever really gotten into DT have there music imprinted. But I'm on here today because, you asked for a response to this Album. I got curious about the album myself. It slipped my mind too. So I had to go and look thru all my DT albums and see which album Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand was on. And low and behold, it was Falling into Infinity. I Love that Album! It is Powerful because it shows the spectrum of Dream Theater. It was just another chapter on the journey thru Dream Theatherland. In my opinion, bands die because they Kill themselves. They do so by Playing the same ole, now it's getting boring, music. No versatility. There Locked in a spectrum they only know. Well, Dream Theater is that Spectrum. And they can go anywhere in the spectrum and leave other bands behind. Remember, DT has been playing now for 36 years now. They have never stopped playing for 36 years. Members change, but so does your underwear. lol. But anyways, I Love this Album. Lex is right, it's Backstage time. lol. This album really shows the Greatness of LaBrie's Voice. Blessings you two.

She is crazy. James voice doesn't fit every song but more are hit than miss. I can't imagine anyone else singing this song or many of their others. James has a unique voice with plenty of range and Doug (guest singer) adds nice flavor to it during the chorus. James killed it on this song though. Even without Doug the vocals are great.
