By the Way you actually reacted to Neal Morse before, because he was in Spock's Beard and he sang on At the end of the Day, which you reacted to. Neal is a great Songwriter and is also in the Prog-Supergroup Transatlantic, also with Mike Portnoy on Drums, Pete Trewavas (from Marillion) on Bass and my favorite Muscician Roine Stolt (from The Flower Kings) on Guitar. Alright!!!! So happy you are exploring this artist. Neal is one of the most prolific artists in the prog genre for the last three decades. Lookup his discography on progarchives. He also performs faith based music. FYI Steve and Neal Morse are in a band together called Flying Colors. The guitarist in this song is Eric Gillette. He is a monster. Dream Theater sound similarity is most likely because you hear Mike Portnoy on drums. There is so much to explore with this artist from Spock's Beard through Transatlantic and other bands in between. NMB is simply stunning live. I am looking forward to attending Morsefest in Tennessee later this year to see NMB and also seeing Transatlantic at Morsefest next year and on Cruise To The Edge. Speaking of Steve Morse you should react to the Dregs.

Thank you for reacting to this one. After reading all the comments I don't think I have anything more to add. If you feel like tackling more concept albums do The Neal Morse Band's "The Similitude of a Dream." It's 100+ minutes, but full of very diverse musical styles, often paying homage to 70's acts the band are fans of. It's based on a novel written in the late 1600's called The Pilgrim's Progress. Along with the lyrics, multiple musical themes interweave through the songs and tie the album together as the main character is led on a journey from the City of Destruction to the City of Light via dreams. Party on, Nick N Lex!!!

This is so cool because The Call is the song that kept drawing me in, even though I wasn't quite ready to dive into the deep end with Neal Morse yet, it was the seed that eventually produced an entire Garden of Eden for me. I finally quit resisting and started truly exploring Neal's music and then discovered all his fantastic Worship music after I became "Born Again" because I had some very real Spiritual experiences eventually including a moment when the Spirit of Jesus came to me, no joke, very profound once in a Lifetime thing but no mistaking it. Next, the new NMB album-2021's Innocence & Danger was released on the weekend of my Birthday and that record is EXPLOSIVE, BLEW MY MIND. So yeah my Life has been changed by this music, seriously. As others have stated Neal was the main singer\writer in Spocks Beard (who you already reacted to i think) for their first 6 albums. To add to some others comments Neal has been recording prog music since the early nineties with a Band called Spock's Beard (1992). With Neal the band recorded 6 studio albums. He left around 2003 to become a solo artist. He has several prog records, several singer songwriter type albums and a few praise album (he is a christian). Also almost none of this music is on spotify or other streaming services by his choice. There is a difference with albums released under his name which he writes all the music and those under the Neal Morse Band which is an actual collaborative band. (The song you played today is from the latter). The Neal Morse Band started in 2015 and have had 3 studio releases with a fourth due out later this year. Mike Portnoy, ex Dream Theater drummer, has played on all of the prog solo albums of Neal as well as being the drummer of the Neal Morse Band. Same goes for Randy George on bass. Eric Gillette and Bill Hubauer while members of the NMB have only guested on the solo Neal Morse prog albums. Neal and Mike are also members of the band Transatlantic (1998) with Roine Stoldt from The Flower Kings on guitar and Pete Trewavas on Bass from Marillion. TA has 5 studio albums . They are also members of a band called Flying Colors (2010) along with guitarist Steve Morse, bassist Dave LaRue and lead singer Casey McPherson. This is not as proggy as the others as they are more song orientated but still some really great music. They have 3 studio albums out.

Love, love, LOVE The Neal Morse Band. They are every bit as good as Dream Theater and they have at least two absolutely stellar albums. Those being The Grand Experiment, where this song comes from, and The Similitude of a Dream, which is a double album. They do have a third album that came out in 2018 called The Great Adventure. While it’s good, the previous two are superior in every way, IMO. They just have better and catchier songs. Neal Morse also has many solo albums that he recorded after he left Spock’s Beard. You have to check out Testimony and Sola Scriptura. If you don’t know, Neal is a Christian who has devoted his music to being more spiritually based than what he had been previously. Mike Portnoy has been Neal’s primary and almost exclusive corroborator since the very early 2000s on various projects. Neal’s solo albums, Transatlantic, The Neal Morse Band (different from his solo band), and Flying Colors are their best known projects and bands but they have a few others. They’re all worth checking out. Nick’s spot on in his assessment of their influences. I’ve always heard Kansas, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and even Electric Light Orchestra in many of their songs. Well done! Anyway…Here’s a list of songs with Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy that I highly recommend. I guess by now you're aware he was a founder of Spock's Beard, which he then left to pursue a solo career. Neal Morse Band (NMB) is an offshoot from that. Of course it sounded like Dream Theater because Mike Portnoy was on the drums. Like a lot of fans, I was bummed when Mike first left DT, but as it turned out, he's worked with so many musicians since then, it's completely to the fan's benefit. So, in addition to the aforementioned Spock's Beard and Dream Theater; you might like Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, Flying Colors, Pain of Salvation, Sons of Apollo, and Marillion. Looking forward to more!

Neal only has a small selection of his music on Spotify. He actually made his own music streaming service called Waterfall, since he has such a massive discography between his various bands. He also features a few other artists on there too. I second what someone else said: you should eventually do an album reaction to Neal Morse Band’s “The Similitude of a Dream” from 2016! An epically EPIC double-disc concept album, to say the least! Reacting to the whole album will have a greater impact, IMHO, but some songs that are highlights are “Long Day/Overture” (the opening two tracks) and “Ways of the Fool.” BTW, just want to say I really enjoy your channel! Portnoy played drums on all Morse solo albums since 2002. They are also bandmates in Transatlantic. I'm pretty confident that DT and Spock's Beard were an influence on each other. Also I have to point out that DT was quite obviously influenced by the big shots from the seventies and also by Saga. But DTs stylistic blend of metal and prog was unmatched for a very long time. Then came Haken🙂 You should definately check out Transatlantic and The Flower Kings.

Also, Steven Wilson side bands (his own solo stuff of course, but also Blackfield, Storm Corrosion, No Man, Bass Communion). Blackfield, at some point listen to the title track off their first album - Blackfield - Blackfield, also the songs "Once" and "Open Mind").

Neal comes from a band called “Spock’s Beard” very progressive challenging music.. the Neal Morse band is very much like another band he plays in called Transatlantic, another very awesome group of super prog rockers!!

Neal Morse became known as the brain child of Spock's Beard and as a member of Transatlantic. He is prolific. The Neal Morse Band is amazing. If you want to do a monster album reaction, do The Similitude Of A Dream. As for other other Neal Morse solo, do Author Of Confusion. For Spock's Beard, do The Light.

Hopefully this comment won't make this worse... There is a Neal Morse Band, and then there's Neal Morse as a solo artist...same guy. When he releases a solo album, he basically does the writing himself, at least initially. When all of the artists are involved in the writing together, then he releases the album as the Neal Morse Band. Both incarnations are freaking amazing!! God bless!!

Eric Gillette definitely has a lot of John Petrucci influence and definitely Steve Vai and Randy George's bass also reminds me of the late, great Chris Squire from Yes. Amazing band!

I am a big fan of you two and have wanted to comment and suggest many songs, however I watch you on a smart tv and that does not have the option. I know you are a big fan of Mike Portnoy. You have recently reacted to Neal Morse Band and Spocks Beard. Neal Morse is keyboard player and singer in both bands. You have also reacted to Marillion. The bass player is also a part of Transatlantic, of which both Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy are members They are joined by Roine Stolt the guitarist for the Flower Kings which is a deep deep rabbit hole. I could recommend a ton of their music but instead will recommend you listen to the Whirlwind by Transatlantic. Trust me :) you'll dig it

I am 67, so i grew up listening to all this stuff. I want to make a comment about all the hate you felt with your SRV comments. You guys are jazz and rock fans. SRV is Blues, blues is about feelings and TONE. SRV, Ronnie Earle, BB King and many others focus on tone. Probably one of the greatest is Eric Johnson (I recommend Zenland) but he is also proficient in fast multi note songs too which I believe is more in line with your tastes. The Blues doesn't get a lot of love, but you hear it in everything once you learn to hear it.

Neal Morse is a progressive rock legend. You'll also want to check out Spocks Beard. That was his 1st foray into the genre. The guitarist, Eric Gillette i call the Swiss Army Knife. He plays drums and keys equally well. He does it all. You may want to check out some of his releases as well.

Hey, Mike Portnoy is in this group. From DT. The ex-drummer. Good job guys.

Love the comment that the song has influences of Dream Theater. Haha! Of course there's some Dream Theater influence especially when the drummer was from Dream Theater and a founding member.
@adamjj853 жыл бұрын
Great reaction! You really nailed all the influences pretty quickly. If you want even more NMB, go for Alive Again off the same album. Also, another related Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy project rooted in classic prog is Transatlantic. Stranger in Your Soul is a pretty epic choice from them.

Neal Morse story and his music very Christian based...listen to the lyrics..they marry the music....they are amazing for sure so glad you guys had a chance listen and experience NMB..much more to hear..

Hey, I don't blame you one bit for taking down your last video, in light of the response you got. I agreed with everything you said though, but most people don't know what you know, when it comes to playing the guitar, so the response wasn't surprising. It's sad how many can't handle constructive criticism.
