I resonate so completely with this video. I love how you marry your aesthetic with your values and everyday life. We love the same things, manual labor and making things, art, music, friends, flying, weather. If you also included leaving the West coast for the East, medicine and motorcycles we might be related in the multiverse.

You both look great with the time off behind you. For you adventurists, I commend you on your where for all. You are made for the water and exploration. Beautiful choice to enjoy your birthday in F Polynesia. Wonderful to see you out smiling and enjoying life again. Love that you’re from Portland. We lived on the westside for many years. Beautiful there, know it well. Quite different from the exotic treasures you so obviously enjoy. Coming from the northwest (predominantly Seattle) where sailing can easily be one’s second life, I wonder if the come again, off again stress, in seeking the perfect sailing vessel, really worth it? For you, I believe so. For us, we gave it up to be near family, enjoying the snow, sun, rivers and mountains, and the activities they provide here on land. Sailing and boating remains a part of our lives, but in a different way. It’s an activity rather than a lifestyle. For yourselves, you fit in well with the lifestyle, you enjoy it as your staple full-time life. Wishing you the best in your search and hoping it leads to the ultimate and perfect decision. I’m excited to see how you come out on the other side. 😊 Wish you nothing better than fair sailing, sunshine, and grand adventures. Now go buy that dream boat and have some fun!
@TheOKellys3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the note. Completely understand the activity vs. lifestyle equation. At some point we will do exactly what you are doing. Among the experienced cruisers we know, taking a while, being patient, and looking for just the right fit is not unusual. We know several couples that took 3-4-5 years to find their next boat. I think that once you know what you are getting yourself into, you're more discerning. Sharing the drama publicly on KZbin is pretty weird. But.... it's real life, and maybe it helps others ....if only to say..."we're not going to do it like that!" Regardless, we're on the edge of our seats, and that's the mark of a true adventure. This has been one! Cheers!

I was sailing in French Polynesia earlier this year - I think my fifth visit since I first crossed the Pacific in 1989. The feeling there has changed completely in the last five years with an obvious local resentment of cruising yachts. There are so many seldom visited parts of the Pacific where the locals are happy to see you that I am more than willing to give the residents of French Polynesia what they so obviously desire so I won't be returning until something changes.
@TheOKellys3 ай бұрын
I wonder...and I mean I do wonder if some of this perceived resentment is because of social media. Follow me...someone has a not-so-great interaction, talks about it on the internet, then others start feeling guarded and vulnerable and become chilly toward locals....and then the locals feel that coldness, and all of a sudden there is a vibe that wasn't there before. Not saying there aren't real rubs or conflicts, but I wonder whether we are talking isolated situations or pervasive attitude. Our interactions over a collective month and half in FP have been...well, really nice. Warm, friendly, helpful, interesting, cool...good! In our travels, by land and sea, domestic and international, we've heard all sorts of stories about this or that place being dangerous or awesome, good or not worth it, friendly, cold, etc. And...sometimes places live up to the reputation, but often they don't. Mostly everywhere we go, we've found people to be incredibly tolerant of our lack of local language, confusion, and even downright stupidity. I think the best course is to just be grateful for the opportunity to visit, and take every opportunity to chat, even about the weather, instead of marching up to anyone who makes eye contact to ask where the garbage is or how to get a bus. Not saying things haven't changed because how would I know? But I am saying regardless, we are all human beings, and often times not taking the opportunity to engage comes doesn't come off right or reflect what we are feeling on the inside. Which should be...happy to be there.
@deerfootnz3 ай бұрын
@@TheOKellys what has happened in FP is that some bureaucrat decided that the max allowable stay in FP for foreign yachts would change from 12 to 36 months. Unhappily this coincided very roughly with the onset of Covid so the lagoons of FP were full of hordes unwelcome boats during the pandemic during which there were very high infection and death rates, almost as bad as the US. Some local indigenous politicians saw an opportunity and started campaigning on an anti foreign yachtie basis citing a lack of spend from yachts with indigenous businesses, sewage and other pollution in the lagoons, and fleets of boats freeloading and spoiling their view. Demonising outsiders for political gain is hardly a new tactic. This has taken place against a background of a poorly performing French economy reducing payments into FP and high inflation and falling tourism reducing the GDP and disposable incomes of indigenous people. Yachties are perceived as rich people not paying their way. I have been through FP twice in the last few years and I have had a variety of negative experiences which stand in stark contrast to the welcome I have received there prior to 2019. I have no need to go where I am not welcome.

I’m going to say what the others won’t. I’ve been watching your channel since before Covid. I dream of selling all my shit, cashing in the 401k, buying a boat and seeing the world just like you. There’s a few things stopping me. I’m afraid of getting eaten by sharks, getting lost at sea, and as a guy from Pittsburgh, I have no idea how to sail. The sad reality is, I’m living my dream through YOU. That being said, YEARS!! You’ve been a part of my life, we’ve never met, but I can’t help but feel I know you guys, and we’re old friends now. I don’t care if you ever buy another boat or go back to traveling the world, just make videos of you two going to the bank or eating scrambled eggs or more importantly Megan taking baths or swimming up for “morning coffee”. Still looking for my long term boat. But what ive noticed is boats are now more spread out then when I started looking in 2019. Its amazing how many I see listed and they expect you to pick it up in tahiti. Now these boats are only in the 50k-150k range which while expensive I can not see myself flying to Tahiti the cost and the time and then hoping it works out and then trying to figure how to get it back to the US and the Caribbean where I'm happy to stay. And after traveling (just a few hundred miles) to look at boats and realizing like you that it was totally crap. I just cant see for any price to leave the the US to buy a sailboat.

I sleep in a 6 ft memory foam bean bag. Mine is flat, so it is 2 ft tall but 6 ft around. It is the most comfortable bed I have ever had. That said, I had to add 25+ pounds of more foam to it, which means it weighs around 100 pounds! I am currently designing a platform for it to live on that I will be upholstering myself. It will be designed so cats and dogs can't get under it and padded with foam so I won't hurt my toe when I stub my toe bumping into it. I plan to buy another 5-foot regular foam bean bag for my living room to hang out in.

I have written quite a number of recommendations for young people applying to medical schools. Invariably, they have been accepted, but often not at their 1st choice. They would ask me; what should I do? The answer: GO!!!! There is no best medical school. They all provide the same degree, the same entry into the profession. Just do it! Now, because I am now "old" and "wiser" (which is debatable), I have given up cruising. I sold my last boat. I will never own another. However, I believe that the medical school lesson applies to boats. What is the best? There isn't one. The question that you should ask: does it float? Sabado is not, what you would call, a "performance" catamaran. However, it floats. It does the job. It gets you there. And, in the end, your life style is the same. Harvard is no more than an ego trip. You get the same degree and the same entrance to the medical profession that you would get at all accredited medical schools A "performance" boat is no more than an ego trip. So, once again: Stop talking and do it!!!!
@TheOKellys3 ай бұрын
To push back and use your analogy, if you knew (or were fairly certain) that Harvard Medical was going to open up more slots and tuition was going to drop significantly in a few months, you'd have to agree that going to Texas Tech instead just because you could get in today might be a poor career choice even though you could become an MD either way. I don't know if a "performance" boat is no more than an ego trip, but I get your point...it is a question we've asked ourselves. We don't look down our noses at any boat, really. Some people prefer slippery and quick, others prefer low and slow, and there isn't a right answer. As long as it gets you out there safely, it is a good boat in our book. We all swallow the hook eventually. If we are lucky, it's for good reasons. Cheers and thanks for the comment.

I think in the years you've spent looking for a boat, you have spent more traveling to look than if you would've simply built a new one. I don't think you'll ever find a boat that's perfect to your liking, so you might as well bite the bullet and build your own. At 51 you are smack dab in the sweet spot of life, this is not the time to sit back, This is the time to grab life by the horns. I say that as a 73 year old, who's starting to see my ow mortality, and realize I could have done so many things and thinking I will get around to it some time, but it's all slipping away and i am beginning to nest, although my wife (15 years younger) is encouraging me to keep going.
