Well done video. AND. You had some fun too. When I wanted to sell my boat, I went to a brokerage and said that I wanted to sell my boat THIS SUMMER. I didn’t want to keep it another year. The broker said that he should be able to sell it “ within a year”. He didn’t listen so went to another broker and went through the same scenario. This guy listened ( what a concept). We had is sold in a month! Done. I was willing to bring the price down to a reasonable amount and it sold right away. I didn’t fight, grind, bicker, I sold the boat for a good price to a young coulpe that will really enjoy it. Win, win!

For several years I looked at Catamarans and thought for sure that is what I would buy (Year 2020-2022). After realizing the premium on cats, I went back and reconsidered a mono. I put a short list of things I was looking for and one was "waterline" but still able to sail short handed and even solo. Last year I bought a 2007 Jeanneau 54DS that was in the NE and in great shape for roughly 250K. After a lot of projects and about 100K worth of upgrades I have a boat that will take me anywhere I want to go, is as roomy as a cat, I can single hand thanks to technology like autohelm and electric winches. Most of all she looks and sails great. As for speed 9-10kts motoring and sailing which is as good as many of performance cats and far better than the floating condos. Just another option to consider!

Honestly sounds like a good move. I've been hunting for a sailboat and, despite a glut of inventory, the prices are remaining high. I think a lot of people got into the sailing life during the pandemic and now that it's (largely) over, they're getting back to real life...but they want a return on their investment as if it were an amortizing house and not a big, depreciating vehicle. Looking forward to hearing about your journey from here on, boat or no

100% agree with your take on the market. Cats are listing for higher prices now than they were 5 years ago. Not to mention some of them are 20+ years old and asking more than they were new. Sellers are fooling themselves. Anyway, my investment accounts have quadrupled in the meantime. Maybe prices will be back to reality in another 2.5 years.

It would be one thing if these boats were selling, but they aren’t. I have to correct myself…some are still selling at “unusual” prices, but many are just sitting. @Vallecaucanisimo just to make clear, from my part it was an honest question, not criticism. For example, would you rather go for a boat that's $50K cheaper but located on the other side of the world or go for a closer one that's more expensive? Or maybe a smaller but new(er) one? Once one budgets the cost of flying, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of time I'm not sure what the answer is. What I do know is that if something sounds too good to be true (e.g. way below comparative listings), it usually is.

I have been keeping a very close eye on the market (here in Australia) and cats are more or less 100k over priced. Be silly enough to pay those prices and you will take the financial hit on the other end. My wife and I are now "Out' of the market. No longer even looking and there is a real freedom to that.

Your analysis is interesting, another point in your favour is the number of youtube sailors that are simply building new vessels. The problem with boats is that they are like cottages, valuable to the people who own them but far less so to the people looking to buy one. Brokers don't help the process and have little inclination to do anything. They get paid if the boat sells but only if they were retained by the client. High-priced boats in your listing show you have inventory. the best brokers are those who have high turnover. Good luck

But is that your perfect boat? Wouldn’t you be that much happier if you lived on a barge with its very own taco truck? Add an airstream and a few tonnes of sand and you wouldn’t even need to get in your dinghy to go to the beach. You like the perks of a 24’ beam? Imagine what a 100’ beam would be like. I bet that combo would be more than 50% cheaper. And when hurricane season comes, you just hook your taco truck up to the airstream and your happy place goes wherever you do.

Sadly, many photos and descriptions are quite aged. 2. Thoughts on building, or having built, your own vessel. You have a pretty good idea of what you desire. A few of your friends are currently in that sphere. What are your thoughts, plus and minuses? 3. If you had unlimited resources, ie, you won the lottery, before retiring to the island you purchased in the San Juan Islands, what would you buy/build? 4. Next time you travel to Vancouver Island, let’s get you out fishing Chinook and Halibut!

Funny how some people look at life. Obviously with all the thumbs up, I suppose you all share this sentiment. But let me enlighten you. Your assumption is that any time and money not spent on a boat is a waste. What an impoverished viewpoint. First of all, we have learned more about different boats, builders, designs and designers than we could EVER have had we purchased another boat right way. Secondly, we have spent incredible time with friends we’d NEVER have met other than through looking for our next boat. Same goes with all sorts of non-boating-related experiences. Last, as the boat market is shifting exactly as we expected, while the stock market has been better than we could have hoped for, financially we are way way way ahead of where we’d be if we’d bought a boat close to the top of the market 18-24 months ago. So…friends, life works out the way it does…being grateful for what does happen and NOT ungrateful or even regretful is the only way to be. Your thesis that we have somehow wasted time or money or both…doesn’t hold for us.

Actively watching cat prices since late last year, even the charter market sale prices are dropping (sort of stalled currently due to the summer hype, but will probably fall a bit more before the end of the year) on Leopards and Lagoons (can still even find some 2016 to 2019 powercats in the 40-50' range for under $500k if you're willing to look at former charter boats as well). The last pandemic was just one cause of the huge rush on supply, and now folks are realizing how expensive boats are, and/or have to adjust because of other financial or employment issues. So there is now actually a rather large supply of boats out there, as long as you're not chasing brands, but we all know cats will always be more expensive than a monohull.

I was fortunate enough to have been able to live Japan over several periods totaling thee years. I love the country, the people, and the culture. It is a beautiful place. I think it would be a tough place to sail to, but a delightful place to sail around cruising. Hopefully, you'll have more to share about your Japan trip in your next video. Kampai.

you two are just fantastic and I love your video's. It is really smart to hold on your money especially in vulnerable times. You two are really practical and it shows you are clearly making a good decision. I love your sense of humour in video's and keep up the good work Sheila Vancouver BC

I can't imagine the level of frustration (and the cost!) of going around the world looking for a suitable boat like you guys have done for a fairly long time now...

Oh we been having a good time. Time of our lives actually. No worries.

I liked the video. Cruising does not require owning a boat. Have you considered buying back Clarity?

The Excess 11 is such a slow boat, one has entered races in Southern California and it finishes last even amongst monohulls in the race or it quits and motors back to harbor.

Very much surprised at 10:45 to see a Lemur on a video purporting to show Aussie wildlife, being a biologist it just caught my eye. For others, be aware that this is an animal native to Madagascar, so if you see one in Australia it will be because you're in a zoo or you're in a drug induced trance....am half-way thru this vid (and a bottle of wine) and am looking forward to more surprises.

The money joke was funny. Didn't cross my mind as insensitive or tone-deaf but I can see how it could be PERCEIVED as gauche. I'm in the same position but with a house. I'm doing ok financially but housing is absurd. I'm with y'all in spirit. Love the vids. They are getting more entertaining and I hope you get a cat soon. :D

We bought a new catamaran for charter for a few years then to cruise. The market has been crazy as the older cats are selling for more than owners paid! So many new cats are going to charter programs to replace older boats and ones destroyed by hurricanes (saint thomas)-500+ lost? So prices have escalated so much.
@TheOKellys7 ай бұрын
Oh, tell me more. With details this time. What boat and where? And how have your charter revs been this year and last? Things looking good?

Another fun vid. I hope you keep a few of these coming out. There is a lot of saturation in the sailing vids right now anyway. Also, curious on your thoughts about the dishonesty in boat sales right now. Seems to be an all time high. The other troubling trend is horrible new boat construction. Lot of info out there on new yacht owners being on the hook for substandard manufacturing and lack luster warranty. I'd hold my money too right now. Cheers.

Ya know, boat sales has always been sharkey territory, but yes I do believe folks these days have become so loose with the truth as to be laughable. We have had people lying straight to our face…standing in front of the thing they are lying about. What is going on? Who knows. Important thing here is to maintain your wits…keep that powder dry until there’s a clear shot…the obvious move. Let the crowds chase the song and dance.

Doctored Sold Boat Data: Recently a broker provided Sold Boat data on a sold boat to justify the cost of a similar boat for sale. I contacted the owner of the sold boat and he provided the "true" data, sold price and upgrades. The broker lied to my face even after I exposed his lie, which was he added $80k to the sold boat price. Be careful and as the Okellys have demonstrated-do your homework. This was the most useful video of all I've watched recently. BIG THUMBS UP!

I know that if I sold my 20 year old Catana 431 (Fully outfitted for circumnavigations) at a fair price, it would probably cost me another 100k to 200k on top of the sale proceeds to buy something equivalent, albeit probably a bit newer. So I am holding on to my Catana and realizing how fortunate I am to have a decent built and fun sailing boat. Also committing to long term ownership as full time live aboard cruisers, it's easier to justify the continuous costs for upgrades.
@TheOKellys7 ай бұрын
So if I understand you correctly, essentially what you are saying is that if you sell for what your boat is worth, you can’t purchase another boat for what it’s worth because it is overpriced. That scenario, if true, makes this market quite precarious, don’t you think? For prices to remain stable, both you and the (undefined) other seller require new market participants to maintain demand, or at least more demand than current production can satisfy. Do you think that new market participants are arriving right now? IDK….The perception, especially among smaller brands like Catana, is that there are more buyers than sellers. But is that true? I believe there are something like 7 471(/2)s for sale right now, with another one withdrawn from the market after a year of not selling. A lot of hose boats have been for sale for a long time. So, is there anything but a lack of selling pressure holding asking prices up? Makes me think of Wile E. Coyote, chasing after the Road Runner, who cruises around a sharp corner while poor old Wile E. misses the turn but takes a moment before recognizing he’s run off a cliff…holding a rock.
