Well done video. AND. You had some fun too. When I wanted to sell my boat, I went to a brokerage and said that I wanted to sell my boat THIS SUMMER. I didn’t want to keep it another year. The broker said that he should be able to sell it “ within a year”. He didn’t listen so went to another broker and went through the same scenario. This guy listened ( what a concept). We had is sold in a month! Done. I was willing to bring the price down to a reasonable amount and it sold right away. I didn’t fight, grind, bicker, I sold the boat for a good price to a young coulpe that will really enjoy it. Win, win!

That’s generally how we do things as well. Decide to sell and sell at whatever the market will bring. I will never understand why someone would “hold out” for “their” price unless they aren’t earnestly trying to sell.

For several years I looked at Catamarans and thought for sure that is what I would buy (Year 2020-2022). After realizing the premium on cats, I went back and reconsidered a mono. I put a short list of things I was looking for and one was "waterline" but still able to sail short handed and even solo. Last year I bought a 2007 Jeanneau 54DS that was in the NE and in great shape for roughly 250K. After a lot of projects and about 100K worth of upgrades I have a boat that will take me anywhere I want to go, is as roomy as a cat, I can single hand thanks to technology like autohelm and electric winches. Most of all she looks and sails great. As for speed 9-10kts motoring and sailing which is as good as many of performance cats and far better than the floating condos. Just another option to consider!

There is a lot that can break on that type of boat (and it will!) ....'everywhere' is of course relative since you cannot go too far north or south on a plastic boat and once you are in SE Asia; good luck finding (or even ordering parts) or getting something actually fixed on a boat chock full of tech

I prefer these types of videos. KZbin is full of sailing channels, but what you're doing now, market research, talking about offers, etc, very few are doing that which makes it soooo much more valuable. I still watch the occasional normal sailing video, but yours are probably the only ones I'm excited to watch, as I'm casually in the market as well.

ITts why I'm still watching - seeing misrepresentation is alive and well and market data - it's why I wouldn't wanna fly half way round the world. I'm in UK would consider Europe but going off to Asia or Pacific isn't an option... specifically as one of the reasons I want a sailboat is to travel the world without having to use planes! Would make no sense to rack up 20k miles just to get the boat first!

Sorry to hear you keep getting sick. I know my sailing plans were derailed going into retirement. Cindy, my wife of 26 years, had one more year left before retiring. I hope you didn't do what my wife did back in 2020. She was the only one in my family to line up for it and a second round, not even my 70s parents did it. Afterwards my wife kept having one illness after another, always getting sick from something. I now have found myself as a widow at 55. Do everything you can do, naturally, to stay healthy. Even though you haven't found you vessel, I'm enjoying your world traveling.

@Vallecaucanisimo just to make clear, from my part it was an honest question, not criticism. For example, would you rather go for a boat that's $50K cheaper but located on the other side of the world or go for a closer one that's more expensive? Or maybe a smaller but new(er) one? Once one budgets the cost of flying, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of time I'm not sure what the answer is. What I do know is that if something sounds too good to be true (e.g. way below comparative listings), it usually is.

Your analysis is interesting, another point in your favour is the number of youtube sailors that are simply building new vessels. The problem with boats is that they are like cottages, valuable to the people who own them but far less so to the people looking to buy one. Brokers don't help the process and have little inclination to do anything. They get paid if the boat sells but only if they were retained by the client. High-priced boats in your listing show you have inventory. the best brokers are those who have high turnover. Good luck

I have always found that the best boats to sail on are other people's boats. I have spent months living and sailing in other people's boats, I just bring the food and the booze and help with the chores. It's a whole lot less expensive and much less stress than owning. I have had even more success flying other people's airplanes. I have all my ratings and stay current. I've probably saved $1 million over the past 10 years.

100% agree with your take on the market. Cats are listing for higher prices now than they were 5 years ago. Not to mention some of them are 20+ years old and asking more than they were new. Sellers are fooling themselves. Anyway, my investment accounts have quadrupled in the meantime. Maybe prices will be back to reality in another 2.5 years.

It would be one thing if these boats were selling, but they aren’t. I have to correct myself…some are still selling at “unusual” prices, but many are just sitting. I think that there just aren’t as many buyers out there now…or at at least as many “I want that boat, no matter the cost” buyers out there. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Funny how some people look at life. Obviously with all the thumbs up, I suppose you all share this sentiment. But let me enlighten you. Your assumption is that any time and money not spent on a boat is a waste. What an impoverished viewpoint. First of all, we have learned more about different boats, builders, designs and designers than we could EVER have had we purchased another boat right way. Secondly, we have spent incredible time with friends we’d NEVER have met other than through looking for our next boat. Same goes with all sorts of non-boating-related experiences. Last, as the boat market is shifting exactly as we expected, while the stock market has been better than we could have hoped for, financially we are way way way ahead of where we’d be if we’d bought a boat close to the top of the market 18-24 months ago. So…friends, life works out the way it does…being grateful for what does happen and NOT ungrateful or even regretful is the only way to be. Your thesis that we have somehow wasted time or money or both…doesn’t hold for us.

As I sit here drinking my coffee while watching your video, I’m pondering what would be the perfect boat for you both. I hear you like performance cruiser catamarans. How trendy. And spendy. But is that your perfect boat? Wouldn’t you be that much happier if you lived on a barge with its very own taco truck? Add an airstream and a few tonnes of sand and you wouldn’t even need to get in your dinghy to go to the beach. You like the perks of a 24’ beam? Imagine what a 100’ beam would be like. I bet that combo would be more than 50% cheaper. And when hurricane season comes, you just hook your taco truck up to the airstream and your happy place goes wherever you do.

It is doubly tough if you are going through this in public as we all are to certain extent with all this social media. Doubly hard because you don’t want to give your huge investment (boat) a bad reputation and you also (probably) want to keep a good relationship with the people you hope will fix the boat. Excellent video, so correct. we are in the same situation. Sold our smaller cat to upgrade (2 years ago) and the prices are so over heated. I have been keeping a very close eye on the market (here in Australia) and cats are more or less 100k over priced. Be silly enough to pay those prices and you will take the financial hit on the other end. My wife and I are now "Out' of the market. No longer even looking and there is a real freedom to that.

Honestly sounds like a good move. I've been hunting for a sailboat and, despite a glut of inventory, the prices are remaining high. I think a lot of people got into the sailing life during the pandemic and now that it's (largely) over, they're getting back to real life...but they want a return on their investment as if it were an amortizing house and not a big, depreciating vehicle. Looking forward to hearing about your journey from here on, boat or no

Nice to see that you are getting “ buckets list travel experiences accomplished! A few thoughts. 1. Are you getting local surveyors to do a “ walk through” before flying to view the vessels? Sadly, many photos and descriptions are quite aged. 2. Thoughts on building, or having built, your own vessel. You have a pretty good idea of what you desire. A few of your friends are currently in that sphere. What are your thoughts, plus and minuses? 3. If you had unlimited resources, ie, you won the lottery, before retiring to the island you purchased in the San Juan Islands, what would you buy/build? 4. Next time you travel to Vancouver Island, let’s get you out fishing Chinook and Halibut!

A 58 ft Catamaran is a HUGE boat. My boat is a 34 x 14 foot cat and it is still a condo. Two actual double berths and queen size master. I am 6' 5" tall and the entire boat fits me well. Compared to a similar length monohull, well, there is no comparison. Have owned both. Love the cat.

We bought a new catamaran for charter for a few years then to cruise. The market has been crazy as the older cats are selling for more than owners paid! So many new cats are going to charter programs to replace older boats and ones destroyed by hurricanes (saint thomas)-500+ lost? So prices have escalated so much.

If someone selling a boat materially misrepresents the condition of the boat, as in your example you used of a boat with grossly misstated engine hours, why don’t you reveal these scoundrels? We’d love to see exactly why and how these owners and/or brokers are trying to cheat you and others. Save some poor schmuck the pain and cost of that trip to Tahiti for a fraud.

Well, they do a good job of indemnifying themselves on their listings. So they hide behind the IDK or I Don’t Know clause. lol. You know we thought about digging in a bit this time, making an example…nothing to stop us…it’s all true…but then we thought you know, that just stirs up a bunch of negative feelings and shames THIS particular broker and seller. But to be of true service to this community we thought it better to warn you that THIS TYPE OF THING is going on in the brokerage business, so whoever you are, wherever you are thinking of buying whatever it is…be careful! The sharks are feeding!

It seems to me that if your incremental cost of traveling around the world looking at boats Plus the lost KZbin & Patreon revenue is greater than about $1,100/mo than from a purely financial perspective, you should have paid a $100,000 premium over what you think a 50 ft boat SHOULD cost. It's a simple math exercise. And the longer you go the bigger the financial hit to you.
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 2 ай бұрын
A simple math exercise, eh? I’m glad you’re not running my business. First of all, revenue does not equal profit…not for any business I know. Second is cost of capital, which is extremely high right now…and extraordinarily high if one considers the opportunity cost in the markets of late. Third is depreciation which is double digit in the two years we’ve been looking. EBITDA margin, which I’ve never gone the trouble to calculate is certainly low single digits if positive at all for an endeavor such as ours. So…the simple math exercise you suggest confirms we’ve made exemplary business decisions. We sail, and make videos about sailing, for the love of it. We have tried our best to bring value to this community along the way…for the friendships and connections. That’s our why.
@lenjanssen9600

@@TheOKellys I used a reasonable cost of capital in my calculation, And of course revenue doesn''t equal profit,, ,but it's hard to imagine that with you flying around the world and paying for hotels and other housing that your expenses on the boat would be greater than they are now. I assumed conservatively that they would be the same. As to depreciation, that's a tax deduction or should be and I calculated that in my model. I think what you are missing is the lost revenue Payback on a reasonable premium would be pretty quick. Every month that goes by is revenue you'll never get back. BTW, I have made a very lucrative career in finance so I may know what I'm talking about. Obviously we all have different risk tolerances...... and you have to do you

I've been in this hole myself! On three boats not too dissimilar to what you seem to be looking at - although I'm a bit lower budget but we seem to have fairly similar approaches to things ....knowing well how the market seems to be, have had fairly cheeky offers accepted, only to arrive to find quite seriously misrepresented boats! 😢 Wondering though - if you've looked at any of the open series Nautitechs? I know you had a mention and interview of an older 47 I sailed an open 40 the other week and found is very pleasant - I'd imagine similar but maybe a little quicker than your Leopard ....would be very interested in your opinion if you got on one for a snoop - or even better a sail!

You might not want to say that the boat market is crashing but it definitely is in a fall. We are selling our momo and have lowered the price twice now and prepared for a third price adjustment. Putting our situation aside though, we are constantly getting emails from our broker and other brokers of vessels for sale that are having their asking price lowered aggressively. While the cat market is doing better than the other boat markets it is also experiencing a huge softening. Good luck in your continuing search for the right boat at the right price…
@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 2 ай бұрын
Well, we hope for your sake and others that it doesn’t crash. Softening is not crashing. Crashing is when people simply leave their boats and stop paying berthing fees. It has happened before. But yes, depending on who you talk to about what kind of boat, the number of buyers has changed dramatically. Prices haven’t fallen precipitously because selling pressure has yet to truly arrive….people don’t (so far) have to sell. They simply want to sell. Broader forces would be required to force sales…
@atxsailor452
@atxsailor452 2 ай бұрын
@@TheOKellys I think the forces are definitely on the horizon for many boat sellers out there. I also believe that it’s probably more true on the mono and power boat side of things. And yes if a crash is defined as sellers abandoning their boats to the lenders in large numbers we aren’t there yet and probably won’t get to that point. Our boat will sell it’s just a matter of time and how aggressive we decide to get on the price and well we will probably get aggressive because we already have another boat ***😬🔫…

The money is indeed doing well! Cheers, O'Kelly's! We're finally on a little catamaran (38' Ocean Twins, 1 of 3 produced from Pat Patterson, who also designed the Heavenly Twins). By no means is it a performance cat, but it seems to be a great place to call home and cruise around. The market is doing a fantastic job of paying for a few little needed upgrades, but the boat market? Yeah, you guys nailed it. We were set on over 40' until I stumbled on this reasonably priced little gem. Anything over 40' is 2-3x the price, without the build quality to back up such price points. Good luck, on your continued search! I'll be happy to buy you guys a beverage or brew up a good cup of coffee if ever we cross paths. Thanks for the content.

Key points, budget, lifestyle and expectations. 500k boat 500k investments and a bank account to support that. Having freedom to be flexible to change is so important. A budget to maintain both must be a priority with expectations or All of it can be lost. Nick I don't like parking garages. Megan I hope this cycle of being sick finally passes. 2025 is around the corner. The current status of the world is going to be determined then. IT has to. Folks can't afford what is happening today. Over value by inflation isn't good. Most that have investments can't afford to take it out because taxes and inflation is going to eat it up. Love you guys ❤️ keeping everyone informed is so awesome.

You are right. People don't want to lose any money at all so the asking prices are far too high (generally). And the "name" brands, like Outremer, are over priced, period. I have always been a fan of the (well built) Mavericks but they are over priced too. Oh well! I am now boat-less (thankfully) and will remain so because I am now over 70 (with money in my pocket because I am boat-less). So, I fly where I want to go and do what I want to do. Next trip: To Islay and Speyside to drink Scotch; which I would not be able to do on a catamaran.
