It hurt that The Lego Movie listed Bionicle as one of the sets "they don't talk about." I loved this series, simply because it was epic and had a nice style. Edit: I realize they actually said "and a bunch of others we don't need to mention." My point still stands though. The lack of representation beyond that is saddening. I mean, they gave Ninjago and a bunch of licensed properties a spotlight, but not Bionicle? Like, not even just having Tahu or one of the other recognizable Toa a cameo in the Master Builder meeting?
@vaimantobe30345 жыл бұрын

Bionicle, the LEGO theme has has had the most impact on my life. While I was alive for most of Bionicle's original run, I was only old enough to buy and understand the story of the last two years. However, as a kid, many of the toys I got were bought from garage sales and other used toy places, so I also owned a large amount of the 2001-2005 sets. I didn't know their stories, but I owned many of the posters and they would inspire so much curiosity about their world. All I knew storywise besides 2009 and 10 was the original three movies, so I would make up the backstories of many of the sets. The bohrok were always my favorite. Two of my friends and I would come over nearly every day of the summer and we would build our own self mocs. I don't know why, but we would always call them our "dudes". Like," Let's build a bad guy for our dudes to fight," or "I'm going to give my dude a new weapon". We would always buy Hero Factory sets and upgrade them with our Bionicle parts and just call them Bionicle characters. We eventually drifted apart. I actually saw one of the friends after G2 had ended, and he asked me if I knew that Bionicle had came back for a while and we talked for a while about some of our Bionicle memories. Fast forward to the present, and I have gotten back into Bionicle and have read the entire series. It was amazing to see the actual stories of the sets, and I was suprised at all things that I had guessed right. I am now buying a lot of the sets that I had always wanted as a kid, and I am glad to say that Bionicle will be an amazing memory from my childhood that I will never forget.

14:22 I just realized something recently, Metru Nui is one giant computer. Ta-Metru is the heat sink and maybe even the RAM, Ko-Metru is the cooling unit and the Knowledge Towers could be something like the data drives and chips, Ga-Metru is either a secondary CPU or the program library, Onu-Metru is the hard drive or mass storage device, Le-Metru is probably either the circuit boards or power unit, (maybe both) and Po-Metru is probably the graphics card or even the microprocessor, possibly even some moving parts like the cooling fans and disk reader. That would probably make the Coliseum the main CPU. While I much prefer the Barraki over the Piraka, I kinda love how stupidly OP the Piraka were. -Zaktan literally survives through sheer force of anger alone and keeps the others in line with brutal yet adept weapon skills. -Reidak could plot and outwit his enemies, he just doesn't want to since he can adapt to any method used to defeat him anyway. -Avak can materialise the perfect prison to contain any enemy just by thinking about it, also a gunsmith capable of building weapons of ridiculous firepower. -Hakann can shrug off extreme heat and can attack enemies with mental blasts, most notably Zaktan who realised the pain could get no worse and drew strength from that thought. -Thok can bring almost anything to life (like the Piraka Stronghold) and is just there for laughs and the mask of life, forming secret alliances with other Piraka so he can betray everyone with ease. -Vezok prior to his division into Vezok/Vezon was the most cunning of the group, a master ambusher, who could've taken the mask for himself if Vezon hadn’t happened. -Vezon himself could not die under any circumstances while cursed, and later he became entangled in a lovecraftian Suicide Squad. It’s like every bad anime villain powerlevel cranked into overdrive. No surprise that they had to be written so they couldn’t stand even sharing air with each other, if they had even a sliver of collaborative skills, they’d have curbstomped everyone.

I actually loved the way they ended the main story, (not counting the rush wrap-up or the extra online blog-- the last part that felt to me like part of the same story, anyway) even if it was because of external factors. You made a good point about the sound design. I never realized it before, but the sounds in Bionicle ads (and, by extension, some of the music for those ads, too) shaped a lot of my perception of the toys, and in some cases are the most memorable part of the whole experience. There's a little 30 second animation that plays when you put in one of the mini CDs that came with Bohrok-Kal and Rahkshi sets, and the electronic music for those 30 seconds is the heart of my nostalgia for Bionicle in general. Playing that 30 seconds of audio is enough to get me thinking about Bionicle for the rest of the day.

Yeah. I came to realise everything I liked growing up (including Bionicle) had a sound/musical element about it that shaped the way I thought about it. The Star Wars films are a great example of using sound design to create a experience never seen before at the time. P.S. I became a HUGE Doom fan after just hearing a couple soundtracks from the game.
@johnnybolanos7165 жыл бұрын
The Bionicle team had some of the best sound design I think I’ve ever seen. It was as much a character as the toa themselves, and MNOG especially had enough atmosphere dripping off of it to fill the Atlantic. Hearing the flowing water and ambient creature noises you hear when you start in Ga-Koro still makes me feel like I’m there, all these years later.

33:40 Just for reference. One of the oldest references of other makuta is from the second movie. When Teridax is trying to lure Vakama into joining him, he says "Join me and my brothers". There's also the Makuta Nui set, which implies that there are other makuta, because a "Nui" is formed from 6 beings of the same species, like the Matoran Nui.
@Makutros2 жыл бұрын
Makuta Nui is more the antithesis to Mata Nui. Its Teridax's secret beast form and thus does not really allude to there being more Makuta. The quote from the second movie apparently at first was a random creative choice. But it eventually sparked the idea of there being a brotherhood of Makuta.

"I'd like to imagine him channeling one through each hand", that is EXACTLY how it worked with Takanuva's half-shadow form. It was literally him controlling Light with his left hand and Shadow with his right. The corruption also caused him to feel darker urges which grew increasingly harder to resist. His corruption didn't stop halfway, it merely slowed down. Mata Nui was dying, but Takanuva was slowly turning evil. I always envisioned the G2 story as one of the many "alternate dimensions" that would be accessible through the Kanohi Olmak (Brutaka's mask). Imagine Vezon showing up in the background for a section, crushing one of those living bear-traps and leaving again.

Even if they don't bring back Bionicle as a whole, something I'd love to see is "remakes" of the original Toa sets, as it were, maybe even in 2021 for the 20th anniversary of Bionicle. Like, keeping the general design and silhouette of the characters, but updating them with modern touch ups like better knees and elbows, slightly more detailed armour and masks, maybe even actual hands to hold their weapons rather than just having them stuck in, stuff like that. Hell, they could even come with a golden version of their mask, and maybe even some silver armour and their Nuva masks and tools that you can swap around, effectively making the Toa Mata and Toa Nuva into one. ...Of course I'd also love to see a "G3" with the same sort of style and aesthetic as G1, but still.

When I was a kid and Bionicle first came out, my brother and I got Onua. Our best friend had Pohatu and a few little McDonald's Tohunga figures (which I didn't care for at all), and I remember thinking how impossibly awesome it would be to own all 6 Toa. As I grew up, I went through the customary decade or so not caring much at all about Lego. Then when nostalgia came knocking in my mid-twenties, I bought all 6 Toa - it was an itch I needed to scratch. About a decade later, now in my mid-thirties, I randomly felt the need to collect all 6 McDonald's Tohunga, as well as the 6 Turaga. Neither of these were things I thought I'd ever care about. It's weird how nostalgia works, coming in waves, and how our memories changes the way we value things. I'm an incurable collector, especially of things that remind me of the innocent desires of my childhood self.

I was vaguely aware of some sort of story behind the weird names and designs existing, but before I saw this series, I never realized how much of a story Lego themes usually had. I was under the impression that was reserved for the 'special' themes like Ninjago, and the licensed themes of course. Regarding the Mata Nui Online Game: I only discovered Bionicle properly in 2008, and learned the previous years' lore through BionicleStory. In *2011*, I finally found MNOG - and was absolutely blown away. The incredible atmosphere, the gorgeous music, the point and click style perfectly complimenting the sense of mystery... Coming up to two decades later, it still stands out as a fantastic way to induce intrigue and present lore. Not only that, but it gave us a reason to care about the stakes too. We get to see the everyday life of the villagers under the protection of the heroes, to walk many miles in their metallic boots. That backdrop really put the importance of the main quest into perspective. Your remarks about the mystery of those original years is totally spot on - but perhaps inadvertently, MNOG provided a delightful contrast between the unknown and the familiar, especially after year one. You could be hunkering down against a bohrok invasion in Po-Koro, or playing with flowers on the shores of naho bay, and these places would feel like little islands of familiarity in a sea of mystery. That contrast made either side even more special, somehow. Thank you, for doing this. All of this. It's been a fantastic experience ✌

MNOG and a VHS-tape with 15 minutes of Bohrok-lore were what sparked a life-long love for Bionicle in me. It (MNOG, that is) really was a perfect way to utilize the internet so early, that is what true innovation looks like.

Bionicle was easily the most potent thing Lego's made, to me at least. You touched on a number of its unfinished parts, but there were a million smaller, unexplored corners of Mata Nui and the rest of the universe outside him. Vezon was travelling other dimensions and could have ended up doing anything, anywhere - a friend of mine made a Twitter RP account for him where for years his Vezon and his steed did exactly that. Half the random side characters had implied or more or less told backstories that were worth exploring, villains included. Every random interaction between two characters could have sustained a novel's worth of tales of cooperation, antagonism, ambivalence or simple side-by-side quiet ambiance. The writing was so enticing, and it left me as mystified as Lego Racers 2's 00s' Arctic's desolate waste. The stories that could be were infinite, and those that were were pretty damn satisfying. A neverending mozaic. As a kid I binged the comics and the books and very much avoided any video commercials, which very much helped me keep my view of it mystical and peaceful, in a way that the pop stuff in those would have prevented. I appreciate others' nostalgia for those, but there's something to be said for the variant of the Bionicle experience that excluded all that pandering and just told its tale with its bizarre shapes and names Also I'm absolutely certain the theme was an inspiration for "The Owl House" where the Boiling Isles are a giant rotten Titan's corpse everyone lives on kind of knowing but generally treating it as just their funky island That aside, this was a lovely tribute, evocative of a great many of my experiences from growing up with it from the first Bohrok line to the end. I haven't looked around bonkle youtube much, but this is without a doubt one of the definitive summaries for the theme, a timeframe set in stone just as it deserved. Thank you for giving it that

So glad you made this video. For me, Bionicle was pure magic. As a kid, everything was strange, alien, and captivating. I didn't get everything, and I was tootin' mad originally when I learned that it wasn't THE Makuta, it was the Brotherhood of Makuta, but I was born in 1996. Literally, Bionicle was the same duration as my childhood. It gave us strange and interesting designs and incredible characters. But I think the best thing it gave me was an appreciation of longer, more epic stories. Didn't grow up with Marvel or DC, couldn't get into Lord of the Rings, didn't really watch Star Wars. It was the tale of the Bionicle. But I'll give a few of my own thoughts and experiences. I mostly ducked out of 2006 for some reason. I only learned most of the story's hidden niches recently, which is a nostalgia blast, and I've only recently learned about the Piraka's individual personality. But 2007 was the best year for me even if I only got Ehlek. I paid the most attention, wanted most of the sets, and was engrossed by the darkness of the ocean. Karda Nui was a twist, but I also like it. The Mistika Toa are just plain bad, I think there needs to be less grey and the colors and shapes more attuned to the original toa, but given that it's only the set design for a few of the sets that I'm complaining about? I like all the Makuta sets, even with how odd it was to just then hear about more than 1 Makuta. I picked up Vamprah and Gorast, who both have tragically buckled under the weight of their own structural fragility. I have to say, my love of the Makuta was probably helped by me turning Vamprah into the Batwing from Tim Burton's movies and Gorast into a 2-headed Dragon, Transformers-style. Would've loved to have all 6 Makuta. It actually bothered me that there weren't 6 more matoran for the Mistika, designed after their bigger buddies because the first 6 have such heavy design cues. I think Bionicle has affected me, too, in the way I tell my stories (because I, too, am a storyteller). Not in terms of robots on islands, or epic battles waged for the heart and soul of the universe, but culturally. My webcomic has sharkfolk in it that are based off of Polynesian culture, terminology, and ideas, and I don't think that would've happened if Lewa was called 'Axe' or something like that. As a last side note: Can we have links to galleries of your bionicle MOCs and the MOCs of the glatorian and the like you showed here? I want to stare at other people being better builders than I am.

Bionicle was one of the greatest things that Lego ever did. It was one of the defining franchises from my childhood, before Transformers or Star Wars. Revisiting it as a 20-something adult, it's reminded me of something about life: there is a reason why we tell ourselves stories. Stories reveal truths about ourselves and about our lives. Stories inspire us and give us hope. To some, they are just action figures, but to me, they are larger than life characters that represent the forces the light and shadow, good and evil, and the amazing mystery of how life never unfolds how you think it will. Thank you, Lego. You made an amazing story that we will never forget. Thank you as well for documenting the whole line like this. This is the way of the Bionicle.

I just binged this entire series in a matter in a few days, but these are some of the best LEGO documentaries I've ever seen. I got to really get to understand themes that I vaguely knew as a kid existing due to flash like Adventures(or Orient Expedition as I knew it, I didn't know it was a subtheme) and Alpha Team. Honestly, this whole series has inspired me to be more willing to try new things instead of sticking to my usual intake of Batman and Star Wars sets with a City set mixed in here and there. I love Lego to death but I never knew that much of what existed outside of my comfort zones and catalogs. Now I want to get whatever little bits of these old themes I can off of bricklink and to incorporate them into my collection/lego city mocs. This video alone made me really appreciate Bionicle, and actually want to get into it instead of just leaving it there as an option to get into. Heck, I probably will get a few Bionicles down the line and take a nice big break from Licensed themes after I get all of the little slivers of Batman and Star Wars I love to death. There's so much to do and so little funds and so little space, but this series really has made me appreciate LEGO as a whole

Watching this video felt like a grand journey in it of itself. As a zoomer who grew up on Ninjago (basically the Bionicle of my generation, as you said in your ninja episode), and only really heard of how big and crazy Bionicle was back in the 2000s, I think I did catch a little of that "secondhand nostalgia" you talked about. It must've been great to have been a fan back in the day. Proud to call myself a subscriber.

Bionicle was something that shaped my childhood. I first discovered it in late 2005, when I discovered Lego, but 2006 was when I got into it. I was 6 at the time, so of course I wasn't really familiar with the lore. But what I needed to know was "Toa-good. Piraka-bad. Mask of Life-powerful Macguffin that everyone's fighting over." I loved the line through 2007 and 2008, and I did my homework and got familiar with the years I had missed out on. Then came 2009, where I continued to be a fan of Bionicle. And The Legend Reborn...wow. My brother, my sister, and I would watch the sneak peaks on the Lego website, and we'd love every second of it. I was disappointed when I did not get the movie for Christmas, but I was able to watch it years later. Then came 2010, where, unlike most people, I was satisfied with the ending I got. It was unfortunate to see Bionicle die, but by that point, I'd seen lots of Lego themes I loved get cancelled, so I was used to it. Plus, Bionicle had a decent ending, and Hero Factory did a nice job of filling in the gap it left. I enjoyed Hero Factory for several years, until Invasion From Below ruined it. Then came Bionicle G2, and it was...mixed. The story had no connections to the original, which made it hard for me to get into it. And the sets got worse as the theme went on, to the point that I didn't even mind when it was cancelled. While I don't hate G2 as much as most people do, it was ultimately just a failed attempt to make lightning strike twice. For a couple years after G2 ended, Bionicle still held a special place in my heart. Even to this day, I get out my old Bionicle collection every once in a while. I was one of the supporters for the Legend of the Bionicle Ideas project, and I really hope it gets approved. But even if it doesn't, I'll always be a Bionicle fan. *Note: Wow! You reached out to Eljay, Just2Good, MandRProductions, a couple other Lego channels I'm not familiar with, and Jangbricks himself? That's awesome.

Kids haven't changed, and they never will. That's something I always see people overlooking. The adults that surround them are changed, they grew up in the different situations that were made for them by the adults of their generation. The interest for this sort of multimedia project and this type of toy will always be there, and I think if we could find a way to get them interested in it and catch their eye it would be healthy for them. We need to treat kids how we wished we were treated as kids. Give them the freedom to do and watch and play with what they want, but also supply them with media and toys with more substance than that. As an example, there's a lot of TV shows we'd watch as kids that we didn't like at first, and only got into because nothing else was on. But now kids are growing up in a world where everything is on- and all the time. We need to spend more time with our kids than our parents spent with us if we want to cultivate their creativity. Not even just their creativity, everything in their minds. That doesn't mean kicking them off the computer or forcing them to play outside. It means deciding to share our experiences and interests with them. That's what actually scares me about bionicle not being around anymore. There's nothing like it. Nothing that'll have my kid diving through lore and filling in the gaps with their imagination. No lego sets that really beg to be taken apart and turned into new characters. No action figures with their own story and people they're fighting. It's all licensed. And a lot of the licensed sets are wonderful, but they don't welcome creativity in the same way. It just makes me nervous. I don't need my kids to play with bionicle- I need them to play with something that excites and engages them. I want my kids to choose their toys over a screen they already have access to, not play with their toys because I said they were spending too much time with a screen and took it away. I get that I'm typing out a whole essay here- and on a video that's been out a while- so nobody's really reading it. But that's what I don't like about the whole situation with kid's content on youtube. That it's so easy to make without putting in any substance at all. We all like to think we would have still chosen our toys over "Spiderman and pregnant Elsa eat poop!!" with several syringes in the thumbnail, but it's not really a fair comparison. A lot of us probably wouldn't have. TL;DR: I think it's important to be proud of the things you like, especially at a young age. And I hope we can start making better things to entertain our kids, because it's our job.

Good essay. I think the stories you liked as a kid are some of the most influential things on your life, even if you don't recognise it later. Without those stories and with parents spending less and less time with their kids each year, I don't know where we're headed.

I feel like lego should just turn bionicle into a media product first and a toy line second. It would be cool for them to restart the orginal story (keep it 90%+ the same) and complete it as it was intended. I bet it would even be possible to make a tv series/ movie series with the original animation style at a fraction of the cost.

Well, time for me to throw all of my thoughts into one long ramble at the end of this series. I first really got into Bionicle in 2007 with the Barraki theme. I remember it was one of the first Lego themes I got into, but for me it acted like a gateway into the rest of Lego, and the other themes that were coming out at the time. Castle, Exo Force, Star Wars, and later Atlantis and Power Miners. Bionicle would always remain my favourite, and it was as the story ended around 2010, ironically, that I really fell into the universe, finding the books and the movies. Its really been an experience to go through these videos and see these themes again, where they came from and what came before them, and I've really enjoyed it. Its fitting that it should be ended with a monument to one of the best stories Lego ever told. I don't often comment on videos, but I felt like I should thank you before comments potentially disappear. Not just for Lego Rewind. I've been watching your stuff since 2015 when you started your big Bionicle G2 reviews, which I still enjoy. It was your Alita videos that introduced me to that story, one which I wasn't aware of before, but would now say I am a fan of thanks to you. And then, earlier this year, I bought your first planet ripple book off amazon. And then I bought the second, and the third all in the span of about a month. I enjoyed them tremendously. The world it takes place in really intrigues me. I'm curious about the Pirates, and how they seem to act almost as a government in there own right from what's been seen so far. They have the necessary machines to do whatever they want, and there isn't really anything to stop them, but ruling over humanity on this ocean world where communities are always mobile and localised to there subs would likely make any state building impractical, so plunder and extortion becomes the name of the game. And given how vast and powerful the machines they possess are, it feels like this has been the order of things for a good long while. And then there's the protagonist, Minnow. Reading through her thoughts and feelings has been very enjoyable. Its been nice to see a character who is Autistic be the main character, and allowed to be a character with development and emotions. Often I've found that characters who are somewhere on the spectrum are treated as unfeeling, or otherwise disconnected from other characters. As an Autistic person myself its nice to see some more variation in the characterisation, and addressing how things can be uncomfortable for us sometimes when others might not realise. I've never been desperately comfortable talking about my diagnosis, to the point that I've agonised for a disproportionate amount of time over this comment trying to work out how to say what I want, but your novels have helped me with my own life, and that is something I can't thank you enough for. When the next book comes I will be getting it. Thank you for this whole series Nick, and for everything else. I'll be eager to see what comes next from Planet Ripple.

Funny thing is that Bionicle was not cancelled due to poor sales. I am doing my masters in Denmark and got to read one document that states that Bionicle's sales were more or less the same for the last three years in a row. They were significantly better than the sales of other themes but Lego wanted to reboot the story again to boost the sales under a new name: Hero Factory. This now makes sense as Faber has said it's all in the same universe. Hero Factory's sales were higher than Bionicle as Lego expected but the reboot took Bionicle fans out of the market and Hero Factory's sales went downhill after the second year. Then Hero Factory was cancelled and the connection between Bionicle and Hero Factory never happened. Then came the reboot for Bionicle and the goal was to reboot the bionicle story and connect it with Hero Factory but Bionicle fans had either grown by then or lost interest in Bionicle. The Hero Factory fandom was small, sure the figures sold well on the first two years but there was no strong connection between customers and the lore of Hero Factory. That's the reason Bionicle G2 failed and then cancelled. I wonder if Lego still has interest in this franchise as their own IPs are doing great and have more budget for the lore. I think that right now it's the perfect time for Bionicle to return as the lego brand has never been stronger in history. Even misses like Vidiyo didn't hurt the company beyond a scratch that people never speak of.

I still find it intriguing that according to Evan Stanley, an artist who works on the IDW _Sonic_ comic books, mentioned that when designing Whisper the Wolf, her mask does borrow inspiration from Kopaka's Kanohi Akaku.
