The Rahkshi are easily some of the best villains to appear in any children’s media ever. Everything about their design in both the sets and the movie is just so cool and intimidating. It’s also quite funny that they were given pearlescent parts that make their colours brighter than the Toa instead of darker like you’d expect from villains, and that somehow works perfectly.

Just wanted to say these videos are excellent and honestly perfect retrospective overviews of the given Bionicle years. When it comes to Bionicle content on KZbin it's usually a clean split between people who don't have as much of a personal connection and consider it a nostalgic oddity or people that like making a show of how deep the lore got and make hyper-long story dives; sorta missing the forest for the trees. These videos really communicate what made Bionicle so compelling while not losing focus of the primary media and main toys. While I'm approaching these videos as an existing Bionicle fan, I think these are just the right balance of detail and simplicity that anyone new could watch these and understand what made Bionicle special. Keep up the good work, I await 2004!

From the repeated title changes to this video, it seems clear that Jett was expecting more views on it (no hate, this video deserves more views, it was awesome!) I just hope he keeps going with this series. The Bionicle mythos and the toys get so much better from here on. My nostalgia brain will always make me more of a Mata-Nui 'original Toa' arc fan, but objectively speaking, the Metru-Nui arc is superior in every way and the toys reflect that. In 2001, the idea of Toa with KNEES was unconceivable. And I don't care what anyone says, Vakama was easily the coolest Toa ever. My dude had hardcore imposter syndrome and still managed to make Makuta look like a chump on a couple of occasions
@JettKuso11 ай бұрын
Your skills of observation are strong… I definitely intend to continue. This will not dissuade me. Some of the Bionicle years are simply less grabby to the nostalgia, it seems. Makes sense since 2003 was one of the weaker toy years, and I don’t really have a ‘movie video watcher’ demographic.
@i_am_tomatosoup11 ай бұрын
@@JettKuso TBH, I never really jived with this movie either. As a kid it was cool to see Bionicle get the movie treatment but compared to the online games it felt a little hollow to me at the time. With hindsight, it's a good adaptation of the world and the characters, but the sequel was when I truly got hooked into the mythos. While I love the Mata-Nui stuff, the storytelling remained vague enough that it felt like marketing dressed up as worldbuilding (because it kind of was), but the Metru-Nui arc changes the course of Bionicle completely. Even past the point that I was buying the toys, I was still invested in the story because of the seeds that were planted during the Metru-Nui arc. I'm super happy to hear you're continuing with this video series because the next line is where things really start to heat up, both in terms of the sets and the storytelling. Sure, it begins the trend towards Bionicles being action figures foremost and some of the Lego Technic elements get lost in the shuffle, but it also opened the door to a level of characterization in the builds that hadn't been seen yet. The Dark Hunters particularly stand out to me. Nidhiki's design in both his set and the movie are just superb. It helps that there's so much supplementary story material, so that the design looks cool at first but then becomes tragic and horrifying for any kid who was staying up to date on the lore. I'm really looking forward to the next video! If I had one wish, it would be that you take into account the accompanying book series. It may be a lot to read through, but they are pretty short and they fill out a lot of the story. If you're too busy or not interested that's very understandable, but I hope you at least give "Time Trap" a go. It's easily the best of the books and it covers some of the most pivotal events, not only in this arc, but in the entire Bionicle series as a whole.

a thing I like is that the later reveals about Takua's past and destiny only serve to strengthen this character rather than dilute it. The 7 Toa Nuva discover a villiage of matoran of light in the literal heart of Mata Nui, and learn that matoran of light were hidden away across the world to keep them safe and that one day, one would become a Toa of light, and it adds this dimension to Takua's feeling that he was always different, and when they find this out, he has to come to terms with that fact that comepleting their mission in Karda nui will destroy this forgotten home that he had only just rediscovered.

Your analysis of Takua's arc and relating it to your feeling of growing up is beautiful. I never really got it till now but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks

He probably wore them off quickly from all that island trekking. Would too if I had to walk the entire length of a Denmark sized island. Thankfully some Ga Matoran were gracious enough to give him new shoes.

Amazing video. I got into Bionicle around 2004 when i was 5 years old, so i didn't get to experience the first few waves, but what you shared with your remembering Takanuva when scared by the concept of adulthood and responsibility, is almost exactly what I felt with Matoro. Matoro taught me to be selfless, and tho i didn't realize it until later in life, just that final issue of the "Sea of Darkness" has helped shape who I've become today. Even before that issue was released, I always felt a special connection with Matoro because he was the only one of the Toa Mahri that i ever got. And I absolutely loved him because his design was definitely the most unique of the Toa Mahri, and i just loved underwater stuff, but i feel like because Matoro was the only one I ever got in childhood, it made his sacrifice in the comic hit even harder, causing it to stick with me for the rest of my life. I hope to see you continue making Bionicle videos, as this one sparked a ton of inspiration and emotion. Unity, duty, destiny.

I always liked how involved the bionicle lore was. The little red guy you got in your happy meal was also the star of an internet series and turned out to be the Toa of Light. The turaga little guys were actually more badass Toa than the Toa Matu. Things like that.

i like how with each video there is a life lesson at the end parts which actually feels relatable and help us connect to our childhood and moments, the only time i had my experience with bionicle was when i got to read a novel about it at school (was suprised it was there), i do not remember which one was but it was good also, subbed

Thanks for making this. It reminded me of similar childhood feelings of being afraid of growing up, not wanting things to change, and helped to both put it all in perspective as well as remind me of all my memories I made and still make with bionicle even into adult hood at soon to be age 24.
@SonicJrandSarah11 ай бұрын
I don't think I ever realized that the plot of Mask of Light was about growing up. It makes sense. I think that was also the point of the second movie as Vakama was going through the same deal as Takua. Although while Takua was a child who was afraid of growing up, Vakama was already an adult, but wasn't ready to take on adult responsibilities.
@ConnerFoxx11 ай бұрын
Yep Mask Of Light is kinda about is about being a kid afraid to grow up, and the second film is more about being an adult when you don't feel ready
@Dargonhuman11 ай бұрын
I'm surprised no one else really ever mentions this, but Takua's name is another link to his Toa destiny as it's a shortened version of Takanuva. TAKanUvA. It's like the V'Ger thing from Star Trek The Motion Picture, with V'Ger just being one of the Voyager craft with some missing letters and ... a few ... technological upgrades.

Just caught up with this series, this is great ! Starting with the next one i'd suggest you mention the novels though, they tell a lot of cool stories that aren't in the movies or comics, really add a lot to the worldbuilding and even the events covered by the movies are more detailed in the books.

There are a lot of parallels between Lord of the Rings and Mask of Light. Takua and Jaller are Frodo and Sam, The Rahkshi are the Nazgul, Makuta is Sauron, and the Ahvokii is the One Ring, only instead of being evil, it's a benevolent McGuffin.

Could say the same with Web of Shadows having parallels with Revenge of the Sith, at least the Vakama and Matau interactions, Vakama representing Anakin.
