The only problem with this drive is that it has no active cooling and tempts can get up to 59C under stress. Best to put a fan on low speed pointing at the vents if you're doing extended testing.
@terrapinflyer273
@terrapinflyer273 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I bought one and didn't trust it enough for long term storage. Not due to temps, but noise coming from it. It was thumping and clicking loudly during SeaTools self-test and was audible while idle as well. Of course the thumping noise could have been the arm inside moving back and forth at speed, but I want no part of that lol.
@bobbymoss6160
@bobbymoss6160 9 ай бұрын
@@terrapinflyer273 If you're hearing thumping, you got a regular Exos enterprise data center HDD inside. WD Ultrastar HDDs are the same way. The newer generation of Exos Mach.2 dual actuator HDDs on the other hand are whisper quiet even during butterfly test.

@@bobbymoss6160 At this point I'm planning to save up a bit more and buy 2 or more bare drives along with an external enclosure or two. Either WD Blues (previous gen, as I've read the newest gen have some issues) or some higher end CMR drives. Seems like it's always a gamble though, so WD Blues might be the better choice for me. Save the extra money for the next replacement lol - or addition.

The Seagate external hard drives are actually faster than people think for downloading games. On PC, the hard drive works to reserve space and then downloads at decent speeds despite it being a hard drive. I get on average 200mbps download speed through the hard drive which is really good. If you really want to take advantage of your internet download speed then I highly recommend really good internal ssd storage.

@StormRaid417
@StormRaid417 4 ай бұрын
@yourussianfriend5115 It has nothing to do with better internet. A hard drive can limit your download speeds severely. My SSD can take 400mbps, while the hard drive is only limited to 180mbps at most. You can have 1gbps internet and still be slow because of the limits of a hard drive.

Glad I returned the one I had purchased at Walmart. Same 6TB model, but it was loud. Thumping and ticking while running the self- and generic tests via SeaTools. The readout from CrystalDisk looked odd to me also. No power on time prior to me powering it up, but numbers looked like were all over the place. Think there might have even already been reallocated sectors. I am curious how quiet yours is, while idle and while transferring data or running a self-test. Maybe I was just being overly-critical of my purchase. But, when it comes to long term data storage, I like my drives to be pristine. Or as close to it as possible, as far as I can tell lol. idk. HDDs are great for long term storage, but dodgy by nature.
@nickscomputerfix
@nickscomputerfix 9 ай бұрын
Yes, HDD are great for your apps data storage and data backups. Lots of storage for your dollars. The two 6TB that I bought from Walmart have worked perfectly and are very quite. Data transfer speed is what you would expect from a HDD. You might of gotten a defective one (poor quality control) off the assembly line. Theses HDD's are not all made in same factory or country anymore. That happens a lot with all computer devices these days with all computer companies.

It was a toss up for this and the WD 8TB Elements, WD won out mostly due to it having an on/off button, the extra 2TB for a small price increase over the Seagate made it better, however I would much prefer the Seagate because of its case being sturdy unlike the WD, If only it had a button.

Some things to consider: The speed that you will get depends on several things: the Seagate HD drive speed of course, the speed of your USB port 3.x or 2.x, the speed of your internal drive: HD or SSD, the speed of your laptop/desktop computer (CPU) processor, your laptop/desktop drivers (updated or out of date) and USB cable quality. Large files being transfer to and from the drive will transfer slower then many small size files. The speed you will get on upload verses download transfers to and from your computer will be different. The speed will also be different on different laptops/desktop computers because of different hardware and software. And of course you might have a bad Seagate external drive too.

I have the same HDD with 4 tb version. The sound is killing me. I have a very queit environment, my computer is dead silent too. No Hard Drives besides this device... There is always a "Hissssss" noise. And it wakes up from sleep constantly without a reason. And when it is working it has head killing sound. I ran lots of tests, copied big chunks of data, and using the drive for almost 2 months. No problem there, but could this noise means I have a defective unit ? Or is this normal for an HDD. I had external HDDs before. Nothing comes close to this HDD in terms of sound-loudness. What are your thoughts around this ? :)
@nickscomputerfix
@nickscomputerfix 2 жыл бұрын
I have 2 x 6TB drives and they have been running pretty quite and smooth for me. My thoughts are: some HDD drives do make more noise than others. However, based on what you have said "when it is working it has head killing sound", that is not a normal sound that you should be hearing from a HDD. So you might have a defective HDD. I suggest you might consider replacing it and/or contacting Seagate for warranty replacement.
