Something to keep in mind if you're using gun lube on a knife pivot is that many of the CLP options contain chemicals that dissolve copper. This is a problem if your knife has phosphor bronze bushing.

Thanks for mentioning Daiwa Reel Oil. I'm using the 10 weight Nano-Oil myself, but that's running me about $45 AUD due to the fact I live in the land down under. That Reel Oil's about $10, and if it's just a tad bit less awesome than the Nano-Oil, that speaks volumes. Have an awesome day, cheers!

nano oil is just mineral oil with an additional ingredient that is all marketing, aka snake oil. they do not have any evidence to backup the claims they make about it. check out bob is the oil guy forums. you can actually buy the extra ingredient yourself for cheaper and put it in your own mineral oil, or synthetic. the price is ridiculous for basically mineral oil and marketing.

I use the 5 weight nano oil. Where I live it gets up to minus 50 and that little bit of extra thickness will decide whether or not you can open your knife. I got a new knife last winter and I was to exited to take it with me so I never lubed it or anything. About an hour into my day I go to pull out my knife and it was literally frozen shut

Interesting video. Personally I find many good quality mountain bike lubes, especially the supposedly non dirt attracting kinds work pretty well along with maybe some good quality gun lubes. That being said i like to keep all lubes of this type to a minimum, especially if I use the knives to prep food, as none of them are of the edible kind LOL.

My experience with Frog Lube is while I like the fact that it's safe to apply to knives that might come into contact with food, it seems to turn into a glue like consistency with age. BTW, interesting video.

Excellent, informative video, Nick. What about lubricating the inside of an automatic knife that I’m unable to take apart? I’m trying to decide between the 5 and 10 Nano-Oil grades. I prefer the 10, but after seeing how viscous it is in your video, I’m now concerned that the 10 would be too viscous to move around and cover all of the moving parts inside the knife. What do you think?

A knife pivot is such a simple machine that I find almost comical how over-engineered Nano-Oil is. Eventually I will buy some Nano Oil and maybe then I'll have to put my foot in my mouth, but I can't see how it makes such a difference when other factors (pivot tightness/lockbar tension) are so important for "smoothness".

I am going to give that Nano-Oil 10W a try. I used to use the Tuff-Glide and frankly had the impression that it never lasted too long (example knife - Giantmouse Ace Clyde brass that runs a little stiffer in general as the locking bar ist quite strong). Then a friend of mine suggested I try Interflon Fin Super - which works much better (viscosity would be around 5 compared to your video), but it is packed as WD40 - so as a spray what is not practical for detailed application.

very nice video Nick. I use the Daiwa lube personally because its what I have laying around because I use it for my high end bench made fly reels. I initially just used it on my knives because its what I had. Then I saw that you used it in one of your videos and I felt much better about using it. Also if I need a grease I use Quantum Hotsauce. IDK if you've seen or tried it but I do recommend it. It looks exactly the same as the Nano-grease and would nor be surprised if they're the same product. Its probably much cheaper then the Nano-Grease as well.

Flog lube has a shelf life, it can spoil, and it dries out and gums up over time, it also does not like cold temps. So it's not a good lube for small moving parts. It can work well enough, if you clean the parts regularly and remove the old and use fresh.

Frog Lube is the only "new fangled" snake oil i've tried that ACTUALLY works (on guns specifically)... Its time consuming to apply it properly the 1st time but it absolutely does work as advertised and it sweats out when parts get hot.... But,, it lubricates as well as most other oils too... the only real benefit is its supposedly "food grade" non toxic.... I got taken by all the marketing spiels and tried a lot of different stuff... I'm now a firm believer that most oils are created equally and theres not much difference at all if you apply it regularly and take care of your stuff... Nano Oil only looks so appealing because it comes with a needle point applicator..

I have a feeling it's...."just oil." I'll tell you what's "not" just oil -- and isn't ridiculously expensive like nano-oil. A gun lube named EWL slip 2000. You can FEEL this stuff is significantly "different." When put into the typical action area of any semi-auto and the action worked you can clearly feel a "super-slipperiness" that you do not feel with other gun oils. I got free samples with an order from, I think, Bravo Co parts, and I tried it for fun, and it really does seem to be a "cut above" other gun lubes I've used.
