@@aprilkolwey4779 I was hoping no one spotted that one😉 you caught me lol Kidding aside, Usually I wouldn’t include single phase motors, but in that case, the heavy load, sound and the very high current draw on startup made a good candidate to include in my compilation

@@NickSilcox3 I think it'll be a good idea if they change those ammeters to avoid problems in the future ngl
@NickSilcox36 ай бұрын
@@downside7671 there is no problem with those amp meters. They’ll get changed out when the chiller is replaced or a VFD is installed. Large chillers like these do not shut off and turn on daily. Once they run, they’re running for days, weeks, or months before they shut off again. Most wear occurs on startup. So we do whatever we do to keep them running. When those meters get pegged from the inrush, it’s normal. Once the motor is up to speed, the current drops down to normal current rating. Which that 1100 ton chiller was about 65ish amps. @4160 volts (I was only there once for a service call)
@downside76716 ай бұрын
@@NickSilcox3 a VFD would surely help have a better control of the inrush current and start up speed, but I've got a question aside from that, do those ammeters (example; the one in the video) stay there, despite the inrush current being way over 200, don't they get replaced? Is it something irrelevant, since the start up is only done in quite a long time from the last one? Hopefully my question was made clear and simple lol
@NickSilcox36 ай бұрын
@@downside7671 those are permanently mounted amp meters, part of the cabinet, this is an older Star-delta, and most starter cabinets come with them already built in from the factory. They’re about 20 years old and never once had an issue with any of them or had to replace any in our buildings. We don’t measure the inrush current. If we did, there’s secondary methods to measure inrush. But We only care about the current draw when it’s running, unloaded, vs loaded, and monitor if the current goes up while demand stays the same of drops, make sure there’s no voltage/current imbalance, or hotspots within the windings of the motor.

2:45 Ugh, WEG motors, the crappiest motors ever. I had to deal with some in the water system I ran. I replaced all of them in a very short time due to bearing failures or burning up. As seen here, you can hear how weak they are.
@NickSilcox311 күн бұрын
I replaced that motor with a new one, old was a WEG, WEG motors are trash but not nearly as bad as TACOs. I can’t count how many I’ve changed out because they burned up or bearings gone bad lol especially if they’re on a drive. Baldor motors are much better

Im curious on why they are all on belts and never just shaft on shaft, is there a safety or practical reason?
@NickSilcox324 күн бұрын
There are pro and cons, pro about using belts, more torque, adjustable fixed speed/ torque with different pulley sizes, a lot cheaper to manufacture, motor can easily be moved or replaced without disturbing the load, alignment does not have to be super precise, the footprint of the unit can be compact and lastly, adds motor/load protection against shock, especially during startup. Direct drive, no motor protection, longer footprint, very precise with couplings and a lot more expensive when comparing larger equipment. I’m sure I am missing a few items on this but these were the ones I can think of.
