But still 57 sec is really slow for an athelete like you. I never made it big in track, I dropped track 2 years ago but since then I am doing cross fit and wight training , I ran a 400 dash last week even though I am heavier than during my track days by 15 pounds , Last week I managed to run 400 in 50.8 sec which is 2 seconds more than my personal best. Man, I felt more deceived in this video than a lot of girls in High School did to me
@nc81863 жыл бұрын
Yea I get that he gets more views by click baiting and I figured before hand that's what it was but it is kinda frustrating how much he tries to defend his time. Like you run multiple youtube channels and rungum just own it and say you don't do much speed work anymore. With a 47/1:42 400m/800m he could definitely squeak out a 52 with a few sessions a week. I don't like the whole I feel better so I must be healthier logic. He feels better because he has to run less. Iirc within the last 6 months he has ran a 52 or 53 second 400m. To drop to a 57 with his base means he's probably just not running. But I think telling his audience that would hurt his brand lol
@Trancefreak123 жыл бұрын
@@nc8186 It's not clickbait. If someone's baited because they actually think he ran his fastest 400m years after retiring, they might need to get their brain checked. Also, why does he need to say that he doesn't do much speed work anymore? He's retired; it should be a no-brainer. Not everything has to be stated explicitly or spoon-fed. Actually, Nick makes a point in many of his videos, including this one, that he doesn't train like he used to as a competitive athlete.
@nc81863 жыл бұрын
@@Trancefreak12 you can't say it's not clickbait if it's contingent on someone assuming he's lying lol. It's not even his best 400m in 2020, or the last 2 months even I bet. It's extremely deceptive and you can't deny that. Yes he's retired and he's running slower but his reasoning for why he's slower is misleading lol. He could be his current weight and be faster and feel better than he currently does and you know that lol. Sure he's not outright lying but the title and content of this video are pretty deceptive lol. He's a former 1:42 800m runner who is struggling to break 57 and he feels like he needs to make excuses for why he's running slower. And imo it's wrong to just tell his audience that he's healthier now and that he lifts more which is why he's slower. But the intro to the video is talking about how much more explosive he feels then he goes out in a 14 for his first 100m and still commentates like he might have a chance lol. It was clickbait, many viewers can't extrapolate his 100m splits and he didn't even allude to being too slow until he's like halfway done with his *voice over*. 1. Title: best 400m he's ever run 2. Intro is about feeling more explosive than ever and trying to beat his best time 3. During the race he only says he won't beat it until it's glaringly obvious 4. Afterwards he says it's okay he didn't because he feels physically healthier than when he trained a lot which is fine but it contradicts the whole first half of his video. All I'm saying is he should just own it and say he doesn't really run much and he has perfect reason not to. It's annoying to see him pussy footing around the fact that he can barely hold his mile pace for 400m and try to excuse himself
@insyw3 жыл бұрын
@@nc8186 He is also taking into account his weight and the fact that he has retired. Him saying it was his best mile was him meaning he felt that he worked the hardest and overcame some obstacles such as his gain of weight.

I presently have the WL time in the 400m in the M60 age group. I ran 57 indoor in March, hoping to go 56 outdoor season, maybe 55. In regard to body weight for optimum performance for older sprinters, here it is: Whatever you weighed at your peak athletic period as a youth, for most age 18-mid 20s, at age 50, 60+ you should weigh at or slightly LESS than you weighed then. Why? Because at 50,60+ you can not build muscle or recover at the same rate as a late teens - early 20s athlete. SO, in order to obtain the best strength to weight ratio for optimum race performance as an athlete especially 55+ ...weigh less than you did as a college athlete and lift, train your ass off. I weighed 143 as a region champion HS sprinter, I weigh 137 now at almost age 61, and I'm crushing my workouts, less aches and pains than I had when I weighed just 6 lbs more. Surviving 400m training is everything, and a lighter body weight will get you that.

I’m 5’5 and my personal best in the 400m is 50.00 on point. Nick you think I’ll be able to go break the records? I believe I can.

47-something is no joke. I'm kind of sad I retired before I was ever able to put on muscle - I was 6'1" 140lbs when I finished college and got down to like 49.3 which I was pretty happy with but 47 is *really* saying something.

I’m not a sprinter, so I don’t run the 400m. But I am proud to brag that I ran a 17:12 3 mile (I’m 15 years old, and that 3 mile time was on a 10k) and a personal mile of 5:18

Nick, I have an idea for a race. Start with a number of runners, say 50 for example. The number can be whatever. Every minute, the person who is in last place is eliminated from the race. Keep running until 1 person is left.
@davidlilly10003 жыл бұрын
That's incredible. I'd always try for a consistent 1:30 400, for a 6 minute mile. Usually came just barely beating that 6 minute time, I think my best is 5:56.

This is why sprinters look healthier than long distance runners.
@nicksymmonds3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I am certainly healthier now than I was as a pro runner.

Pro distance runners are very skinny, but not necessarily bc they run distance. A lot of them would still be super thin if they sprinted/lifted bc of genetics
@MrMusic2383 жыл бұрын
@@emmettmcgrath4871 yep, at the top level of any sport, you get the specific body type that is suited to that sport. I think that's why if you're serious about a career in sports it's good to be guided by your body type. If you're 5'5 at stocky, there's not much point in aspiring to be an olympic rower for example.
@quinnsullivan14133 жыл бұрын
@@emmettmcgrath4871 yeah they are skinny but I don't think it is just genetics as a long distance runner myself and knowing runners that are 250 mile runners it is just that they are usually trying to cut down on that weight but they can get like body builder big.

This shows you why I love track and field. This is a world-class runner who was known for his finish. Yet for his event the 800 and even the 1500/ mile a 47.6 is just agonizingly slow. Most of his competitors could run that without breaking a sweat with PR of 45.5 or better. This may also explain why in championship races he was always just so close.
@thomasmckenzie45843 жыл бұрын
I was going to say the same thing. Most of these world class 800 guys are running 45 for a 400. If Nick could've run somewhere in the 45's, who knows what his 800 time would've been. Nonetheless, 1:42 is a spectacular time that only a few dozen people have ever run.
