Rosalina herself is pretty scary now that I think about it. Like she’s clearly a human, so how does someone with a human mindset just decide to live in the emptiness of space for what seems like centuries unless they were mad from it? That would probably explain her lack of decorating for her observatory, which by the way is the only place she sees being in space and all

The dark matter in one of the Bowser galaxies will make strange sounds as the player gets dissolved into nothing, and then you die almost instantly. I keep having dreams about it. For example, a guy puts the dark matter into someone's ice cream. I must say, that stuff is fascinating.

this video makes me really happy since it's so true tho! when i first played this game around the age of 6, everything about this game was was just so eerie looking as well as unnatural. not to mention, outer space in general is just so confusing and strange. - the UFO that that just starts buzzing right before grabbing the whole castle; it used to scare me a lot. and, during the last opening cutscene where peach's castle ends up in space, and then Kamek appears, starts talking gibberish, and then laughs very loudly as he blasts Mario away. that's a traumatizing experience for a 6 year old who just liked playing baseball on Wii Sports or trying to pass out of bounds in Mario Kart Wii cuz i wanted to pretend that i was one of the shoppers in Coconut Mall lol (yes i was a wii kid) -y'know that one golden pipe from Good Egg Galaxy? at the (bottom darker side) first planet that you land on, that pipe leads to an area where you have to collect the music notes to gain a 1-up mushroom. that may seem nice, but the music playing in the background is just so creepy. go back and listen to it, there was a reason why i skipped the pipe through my second playthrough lol - oh i was terrified of Megaleg. the face looks like a fly with its buggy eyes...i despise flies. King Fin was scary because of the fact that you have to keep swimming, but you don't know if he'll appear behind you or not. not to mention all of those annoying turpedo shark things that are trying to kill you at the same time. Megaleg and King Fin still scare me to this day. and for Petey Piranha, tbh i felt really bad for forcing him to come out of his shell the first time i played it. he's really cute walking with half of his shell on top of him. however, after hitting him the second time and he becomes all red from anger, that's when i start getting a little freaked out. but ya, seems unfair to Petey so, i wouldn't disagree if someone were to say that 'Mario is not a hero' *cough* -those moving boulders with the red stone that u have to hit for it to get destroyed. ya, as a kid, i thought that that red stone was jam. and so why would some giant boulder have jam in it? it seems so unnatural which is why i hated them so much. -i used to explore the dark areas of the Rosalina's observatory where you couldn't exactly go to those levels yet until you get another grand star. and then i'd get lost. and then i'd start to panic. and then i'd be forced to restart the game cuz i couldn't find a way back to the open areas. not exactly scary, but i might as well this in too. - because of how a lot of these galaxies are very unsettling, i only used to play Super Mario Galaxy just to repeat galaxies i've already played which seemed more inviting e.g. Honeyhive, Loopdeeloop, and Sweet Sweet galaxy were the 3 main ones that i really enjoyed playing :) so uhh ya sorry for the long comment lol

Fun fact: I am currently playing through Super Mario Galaxy 2 right now and made a story about the Hell Valley Sky Trees that goes even deeper in their origins and what exactly they are! I once also had a dream the other night that in Yoshi's Island DS, the Podoboos (the fireballs that hop out of the lava) were labelled as "Hell Podoboos" (I am not kidding you). 0:47 Also, 131 Stars in SMG1! As a kid and there was one thing that I was very scared of by this game. it’s very different from all the other reasons that you guys have suggested. it’s not something looking scary. Instead it’s something sounding scary. I have sensory triggers to different noises. some noises if they feel unnatural or have a certain pitch I just don’t like them and get unsettled. and what scared me so much was is the sound effect that played when Mario fell in the purple poison goo. It triggered me The most out of any sound I’ve ever heard in my life. I still loved The game and still do but I would always avoid levels with that poison.

Trust me, the original Mario 64 is a lot scarier. I especially remember the following things: - The sound effect when you try opening a locked door, and Bowser laughs after a dark jingle. - Going through a Star Door and seeing what's behind it. Especially the second Star Door with Dire Dire Docks behind, and the third door with Tick Tock Clock always gave me insane creeps when I was younger. - Dying. This is the first Mario game, where Mario actually has a death animation at 0 HP. And all these animations look so evil and scary... - On the topic of Bowser, let's talk about the Bowser stages. All of them look very scary, the first one being very dark, the second one filled with lava, the third one floating in dark purple skies. But the eeriness wouldn't be complete without the Bowser stage music. - Or what about several normal courses and their portals... Best examples being Hazy Maze Cave, Lethal Lava Land, Shifting Sand Land, Tick Tock Clock, but the most terrifying is probably Dire Dire Docks. Seriously, these levels have spooked me as a kid. - Oh, and don't get me started on the Game Over screen. Usually in games, the Game Over screen is straightforward, with a sad tune to it, a Game Over message, and a continue or exit option. In Mario 64, if you run out of lives, you first end up on a black screen, then all of a sudden, the infamous Red Screen of Death with Game Over lettering appears in a star shape, VERY spooky music begins to play, and a totally dizzy and defeated Mario says "Game Over!". Jeez, if I had gotten this screen as a kid, I never would have played the game ever again... Which is why even today, almost 20 years later, I always make sure I have enough lives, because I don't want to get this screen ever again. If you compare this with the DS Version of Mario 64, you can pretty much tell that the entire game, save for the Game Over music, looks a lot more child-friendly and innocent. Which actually is why I prefer the DS Version over the original, not just because of the additional amount of stars, characters and other content we got.

Most of this is surface-level stuff. I’m surprised Deep Dark Galaxy was never mentioned… It’s not in-your-face scary, but it has a pretty uncanny atmosphere that comes not just from the underground lake, but from how most of the galaxy seems slapped together from strange unrelated objects, as if it was where Rosalina hastily dumped all the things she couldn’t find a place for in other galaxies. Combine that with the music, and it is pretty freaky.
