The River Thames is a giant liquid story book of treasures both ancient and new. 3000 year old treasures make their way to the surface to be found centuries after they were lost, and modern objects sit on the river bed waiting to be found at low tide! Pilgrim badges or sunglasses. You can never tell what you are going to find from one day to the next. That is what keeps us going back to search the mud. In this video I mudlark at one end of the Thames, and then travel up to opposite end near Putney to meet up with Tobias Neto ‪@Tob2n‬ and Lukasz Orlinski who are mudlarks and metal detectorists. They have both found some wonderful historical treasures.Tobias Neto found a Victoria Cross in the Thames in 2015 and you can find out more about it here and decide for yourself which of the two soldiers could have lost it in the murky depths of the Thames:-
• Mudlarking with Nic Wh...
Lukasz has found some wonderful pilgrim badges from medieval times as well as a 3000 year old bronze age spearhead.
In this video, we go from one extreme to the other - finding ancient history and modern artefacts. It pays to keep an open mind when you are larking on the Thames.
Please check out Tobias KZbin channel at ‪@Tob2n‬
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart and if you would like to treat me to a virtual cup of tea, then my kofi account is here. ko-fi.com/nicolawhitetidelineart
All donations very gratefully accepted and used to improve my channel - or for a nice cup of tea!
If you would like to book a ticket to the talk I mentioned at the end of the video then the link is here:-

Oh and of course, dont forget that if you would like to try mudlarking the River Thames - you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. Link here :-

Thanks for watching everyone. I love to read your comments and feedback so please keep them coming! Take care, look after yourselves. Sending you love from here in London.
See you soon.

Thank you for watching everyone. Im out this Sunday evening watching my son Angelo playing the main stage in Faversham with his band @collateralrocks so when this video goes live I'll be rocking out there like all good rock mums - so, will come and respond to any comments later on! In the meantime I really hope you enjoy this outing on the River - the second half of which is with Tobias Neto and Lukasz Orlinski. Do go and check out Tobias Neto's KZbin @tob2n and also, I mention the Totally Thames Festival which is taking place between 1st and 30th September, and you can find out what's going on there at this link, including my talk on Sunday 19th September at Woods Quay in London :- thamesfestivaltrust.org/whats-on/a-mudlarks-feast-4862/ Catch you all later. NO, no, thank you for 40mins of complete bliss, your videos are done in such a way as I feel like I'm right there mudding with you and not 5000 miles away. The music, I presume much of it Angelo's, the shots with the wildlife, how you approach a new find, and your excitement as the stem slowly keeps entering daylight for the first time since the owner threw it (or lost it) into the Thames. And the stories, just awesome! I hope your son rocks it and everyone has a great time.

Agreed! I don’t understand how anyone can litter anywhere. It’s so irresponsible and I appreciate your efforts to clean up the Thames! I never allowed my children to throw even the tiniest bit of garbage out the car window. Again, thanks Nikola and other mudlarkers for helping and being responsible!!! 🙂🙂

@@anitacarey2389 As a child who grew up on the sea, filling my pockets with stones and crab shells and bits of wood I totally understand her passion. I've said it before Nicola is a cheap date! Give her an old button, a pipe or lead toy and she is a happy bunny. I used to muddle in old dumps and was thrilled with a poison bottle of old jam pot. I love these moments with her on the shore. xoxo

THE REAL TRESURE In the wind a child runs happily along the river sees the clouds chasing after each other let's himself go to that feeling nothing around him. I have an interest in edged weapons, seeing that beautiful Bronze Age spear head in such incredible condition was amazing, the technical skills they had over three thousand years ago are a testament to human abilities when you think that was made with the most basic technology; clay, charcoal and knowledge that was passed from master to apprentice.

I love your pretty button found early…then all the way to the 3000 year old spearhead your friend found. I live in Minnesota, and have been utterly dismayed by the fact that if we do not clean up the headwaters, no one downstream will bother. So I’m grateful for all the work you Brits have done with the Thames. Alas, my travel and volunteering days are past, now; how I’d love to help, even if just clearing a few pieces of modern junk. I so love your videos!

Crosby Hall is a historic building in London. The Great Hall was built in 1466 and originally known as Crosby Place in Bishopsgate, in the City of London. It was moved in 1910 to its present site in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. It now forms part of a private residence, which in 2021 was renamed Crosby Moran Hall. Maybe??

I can imagine that the spear was inside a body, human or animal, that met its end in the river. As the body decomposed, the wood hand came loose and worn away, all that was left was the spearhead in the mud.

Me too, I knew what it was straight away. My Peter Storm badge is blue. I also have a couple of (very non-PC) Robertson’s jam badges in my jewellery box too. Nicola, I once walked along the River Tamar, near Saltash, (near the viaduct south of Burraton Coombe) where naval ships would be moored back in the day. I found a little blue jug with a hole in it and no handle, which still we use as a toothbrush mug 40 years later, and a piece of pottery with Per Mare Per Terram, which was significant as my husband was a Royal Marine at the time.

The Peter Storm badge I think is from the Peter Storm wet weather clothing company (or whatever its called). I've seen coats with 'Peter Storm' embroidered on the sleeve in the past. Hi Nicola, just another one of your wonderfully put-together videos! It’s so nice to see the wildlife intros you do. And I had thought that the Thames was not as polluted as so many other waterways, but this video showed that not to be the case. And I’m sure the general population of London would not have a clue that you take a lot of it away with you….God bless you. So many clumsy visitors losing their sunglasses. You could startup your own stall with that lot! I think Tobias has a crush on you to give you all his locks….either that of he’s sighing with relief that someone else will take them off his hands. It was lovely to see him and his friend and all their wonderful finds, some of which were AMAZING! That Bronze Age spear head was in such good condition, wow! Thank you for sharing ! We always look forward to your offerings!

I wish I were in Faversham this evening to witness your performance, don't forget we talked about you ,your son and his band performing on or beside the mud someday BTW got a new favourite singer Anne Reburn she does a lot of covers of old pop faves ,singing with mutiple iterations of her self in harmony sometimes acapella sometimes self accompanied. She hasnt usurped my # 1 fave gal singer after Debbie Harry ,Morgan James. Now you with your multiple talents are still by far my fave You tube lady XXX PS must also talk about "type" sometime as my grandpa was a Post Master in my early days but also had a printing business in a small Devon village who printed everything from business cards to Farm sales in sections to be posted on hoardings his works were a miraculous place to play and learn how to spell ...backwards LOL

Lovey video as always Nicola, thank you. It is known that even in Roman times, they would throw a coin into the river for good luck when crossing a bridge, as of course we would these days with a wishing well and some religions do with offerings to the gods. It amazes me that there is still so much history to be found in the Thames, even after centuries of mudlarking!

I really enjoyed this video. I love the Thames and I am very lucky to have traveled the whole of the navigable river in various boats. I do miss it now that I live in Alberta. Thank you so much for your Videos. Andy.

I so enjoy your videos. It makes my Sundays, thank you. These finds are incredible! Such history which is a favorite thing of mine. Where I grew up I found many British coins that dated from about 16 to 1800's and a lot of other things. This was in New England. I just watched a repeat of " The Curse of Oak Island" last season, second to the last one and they had found some shards of pottery. The person said that there was a piece of clay pipe in amongst them. I immediately though of you and also the trip that it would have had to make! Thanks again for all the time and work the you do to bring us these amazing videos! And please, stay safe!

What a lovely gift those padlocks were! I don't have a fully formed idea, but my brain keeps going back to the modern love bridges like in Paris. Maybe you could do a series of artworks pairing the locks with some sort of more ancient sort of fence or bridge idea? Thanks again for a great video!
