I came to put a comment saying I thought it could be SO on that Ink Bottle and could it be Stationary Office. Found out I've been beaten to it by a year or so but at least it seems I was correct. On the subject of the Macleans Bottle, my Nan lived about 10 - 12 miles away from where you were and, it seemed to me at least, she got through a bottle a week, so maybe that was one of hers. LOL

Hello Nicola, I simply adore all your finds. Must tell you a little story about Sloan's liniment. Being raised on a farm with all sorts of animals, my dad always had Sloan's, just in case a horse or cow (or mule) got a limp. It seemed to ease their pain while walking. Once I dropped from a rather high tree branch in our backyard and sprained my ankle quite badly. My mum rubbed the Sloan's liniment on my ankle and it helped somewhat. A lot like arthritis ointments work today. It took several days for the swelling to go down and being a somewhat dramatic child I limped around more than I should just wanting attention and the warming effects of the liniment. When I read it was " good for man and beast" I was miraculously cured because I was neither a MAN nor a BEAST. Anyway, I continued to be rambunctious throughout my youth and that was the first of many misadventures. I do so love Mudlarking and hearing the recap or roundup stories. Greeting from the U.S.A.

The Sloan's Liniment bottle reminded me of Spike Milligan: while he was serving with the Royal Artillery in North Africa during WW2, his battery commander and one of the sergeants went fishing in the sea with hand-grenades and up floated a hammer-head shark. This was brought ashore and duly fried on a griddle, making an appetizing smell, which prompted Gunner Milligan to bargain for a portion. His verdict on eating it, though, was that to duplicate the taste of hammer-head shark one should just boil some old newspapers which had been soaked in Sloan's liniment.
@jimmyrustler89833 жыл бұрын
I can attest to that. Sharks and rays pee through their skin essentially, so you have to soak them in fresh water overnight to purge them before cooking. Love any Spike Milligan based anecdotes too 👍

I love, love, love all the bird life you show us! It looks so murky sploshing around in the muddy gloop but then a swan or some sandpipers, or a mother duck with her little babies appear. Just lovely! That Italian sounding named bottle may be two names and the wrong way around to how you mentioned it. Try Googling that. I’ve mentioned that my dad was a buffalo and would get all spruced up, grab his bad with “regalia” of apron, medallions and cuffs, every Sunday evening and go to his lodge meetings. I never saw that he did anything for the community but I do remember having Christmas parties with all his buffalo friends and their families one in particular where Santa arrived over our outdoor bathroom roof. We have a photo of the whole group and, even though I look only about two years old, I sort of remember it, probably from seeing the photo so many times. They were good times. Mum always said “lodge” was just a an excuse for” all his drinking buddies to get to bend their elbows!”

The birds are lovely. “Chinina” means “quinine” in Italian. “Voltiana” would be an adjective, perhaps referring to Alessandro Volta, inventor of the electric battery. So, Chinina Voltiana would be the name of the product.

Chinese Battery?
@andygoldensixties42013 жыл бұрын
yes for Chinina (pron. Keenena), but most likely "Voltiana" means "from the city of Volta", that is to say COMO, the town in Lombardy, on the big lake, where Volta lived and made his invention, there are still many shops or enterprises that use the adjective Voltiana- but I cannot find othere informations.
@andygoldensixties42013 жыл бұрын
that bottle must have been a drink, not a medicine, quinine has a long history associated to malary in Italy, the production and distribution of quinine was a state monopoly (like tobacco, salt), sold in pills in each and every tobacconist shop, produced in State Owned Military Pharmacological Laboratory in Torino and later Florence, never in Como, that's why I think it was a drink, we still have a soft drink called "Chinotto"

but could even be a COSMETIC, I've found a lot about using Chinino\chinina for Hair or Beard

What fun to travel back in time to spring and see the wonderful little ducklings in addition to your finds. I also enjoyed the white bird that was stomping in the puddle - presumably to dislodge whatever little sea creatures it eats. However, I pictured it stomping grapes to make wine! 😆
@Aengus423 жыл бұрын
The stomping is to mimic raindrops to convince the earthworms that it's raining and that if they don't stick their heads out they'll drown. All gulls seem to know the subterfuge although that one had it a bit backwards by trying it out in a puddle. Although it seemed to be working, so what do I know eh?
@shannahenk16553 жыл бұрын
@@Aengus42 Thanks for the info! I didn't know gulls did that. I don't live where I get to see gulls often, and perhaps the times I've gotten to see them, it's been the wrong habitat for that behavior - at the ocean in the US where there don't seem to be worms along the tideline.

Yeah, Sloan's Liniment ....their motto was "Good for man or beast!". Their competitor was Gombault's Caustic Balsam. They were both advertised as horse liniments for aching muscles and skin afflictions, like abrasions from bridles and horse tack, but humans used them too. I have a Gombault's I kept cause it is mouth blown and 1880s-1905, I have only found machine made Sloan's, a cork closure from the 1910s, and a screw top from the 1920s. I think Sloan's is still sold in agricultural regions, coincidentally. I am scoping out an 1840s home site looking for a bottle pit to dig and I found something odd on the surface. It is white, glazed porcelain, umbrella shaped, with a knob on top, and a raised ring on the concave bottom. It looks like a miniature lid off a sugar bowl but is only as big around as my thumb. I don't don't know what it is! It was found near a 19th century ceramic button. Either way, awesome finds Nicola! I do love military and naval finds! Edit: Just looked it up! Yep, Sloan's is still sold! Even has a black and white photo of Sloan himself on the bottle! Big 1870s mustache. 😂

@@nicolawhitemudlark I will try later. I am having trouble with this phone, I need a new one! Could that little thing be a lid from a doll's tea set? For a little girl? I think it may be! Either way, once they are through bulldozing out there, I think I will find the bottle pit under the banks of a small brackish water bayou that has narrowed, and begun to fill in from human activity. I have found where the house stood, there is a patio made from early style brick that was covered over with concrete in the 20th century, and gas or water pipe sticking out of the ground next to it. An 1840s site will have some earlier pontiled bottles! 🙂

@justdustino13713 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyrustler8983 Whoa! That is a mouth full! I have alot of nice bottles from pits, and the Caustic Balsam for horses came from a pit. The Sloan's I've found were surface finds! Most of what we find here from the UK are the penny inks, and stoneware ale bottles stamped "Grosvenor, Glasgow". Now I do have an oddity I am curious about! It is a small mouth blown, shear lip, clarified bottle. No pink in it from magnesium oxide, so it was clarified with selenium I think! It is a flat, flask-shaped medicine and it has a sun rays embossing over "Compromese de Vichy" or something. Maybe it is French! Came out of a 1890s, 1900s pit.

@@nicolawhitemudlark it wasn't great tbh most left at lunch 😳no signals in any of the fields but I can't complain I did get that roman and got to meet you 👍i enjoyed the weekend and will be back👍apparently someone did some digging of the past and found out the farmer had a group digging there for 17 years hence the lack of finds, but I'm happy just to be out there as I love history 👍keep up the great work with your channel you presenting and editing is spot on ❤️x

Nicola, your photography of the wildlife adds so much to the enjoyment of your mudlarking ventures. The “dancing” bird was hilarious and a joy to watch!. That area of the Medway is as beautiful as is the historical information that you unearth. Thank you. Sue and Ian, Australia

I always love your historic finds Nicola. I especially LOVED seeing the Mamma Duck and her little ducklings. I'm a bit of a cat lady, but I'm pretty sure I'd become a duck lady if I lived near the Thames!! 😂❤🇦🇺

Beautiful pipe. You often find really unusual and beautiful items. Also, the wildlife seem to “flock” to you. The birds are stunning.

Nicola I look forward to your videos on Sundays usually and once again you included a lovely lot of wildlife, the Mallard and her ducklings was particularly poignant and the egret fishing too. I just knew a pipe was in the offing when you zoomed towards so I knew what was coming!!! Great history too XX.🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍

I love how you have included local wildlife in your videos. I look forward to seeing your crow, Canada goose and swan friends; as well as nature shots and other water fowl. It is amazing that you can find history pieces and relay them onto the family members!

@@nicolawhitemudlark they discovered even chickens have wee whiskery feathers near their beaks, and I had adopted 4 more kittehs abandoned by the previous owner. With my two kittehs & our old family doggo; there was a plethora of whiskers. They joked that in a few years I'd have whiskers too. 20 yrs on, and still no whiskers on Mom. I do have goats now & they get the occasional long whisker though. 😉
