On Wednesday 12th December 2018, I met up with Chill Bill and Si-Finds to film a Christmas Mudlarking Special!
This video is made up of some of our finds from the day out at Millbank in London. During the expedition, Simon Bourne (Si-Finds) made an extra special discovery which I was particularly green with envy at! You can find out more by watching this video!
During the video I mention a blog by Marie Louise Plum about her mudlarking finds. You can find the link here:-
thamesmudlarkdiary.com/
And also, I mention the artist Annabel Ludovici Gray. You can find out about her project here:-
vimeo.com/301940940
And her website is here:-
www.annabelludovici.com/
You do need a permit to mudlark along the River Thames and you can find out the details on the Port of London Authority website which is here
www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Tha...
Thank you for watching. Comments and feedback always welcome.
You can find Chill Bill's channel here:-
/ @chillbill1
You can find Si-Finds channel here:-

see you soon.

This was one episode that I just found yesterday. The Forget Me Not token touched my heart. I just can't imagine that a 10 year old girl was sentenced to prison for stealing a loaf of bread! Your research and history is remarkable. It connects these artifacts to the REAL people from days gone by. I just know that I won't forget Mary Franklin! Thank you--you are a treasure!! 👍✨💖

@@JamesBond-uz2dm Hi there James...Nicola told us that brass forget me not was not done Mary herself, but to know she threw her prison I.D in the Thames just makes the story even more poignant. Massive thanks for letting us know that. For some reason i haven't been able to get that story of a 10yr old child being thrown in prison out of my head...it just seems barbaric, even though it was a long time ago. Can i also second your sentiment, and say i hope life was more kind to her after that. Thanks again my friend....Peace.

I read an excellent book about this that gives it an even more disturbing angle. The British authorities needed to populate Australia with young, fit, healthy people with good teeth and no problems. Petty crimes were 'invented' and perfect candidates spotted, in order that there were plenty of the physically right kind of people to transport. Quite often, a death sentence would be commuted to transportation - the authorities would then look merciful, whereas actually all they wanted all along was the healthy specimen for their colonisation programme.

The saddest thing I've ever found was a lone tombstone marked with "Our baby" in the middle of the woods on Fort Benning, Georgia when I was going through basic infantry training in 1985. It has haunted me all these years, the pain of the parents that lost their child, the remote location, and the solitary marker all alone out there. It appeared very old but had no dates on it. I know the government moved many people as the base expanded through the years.

Your closing words brought tears to my eyes today. I've had a tough year and lost my brother in July. He was only 47 - the last of my family, and we were very close. He loved your videos and introduced me to them last year.... I've watched them all. I was telling him about the new ones while visiting him for months in critical care, even when he was in a coma. His birthday was two days before Christmas, so I am finding this time of year difficult to cope with. Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful comments and keep making the videos and the artwork as they give so much joy to many, including myself. All the best.. Lez

These were some amazing and very historical finds. The Mary Franklin forget me not was my favorite of all. I am from the United States but have always wanted all my life to visit England and Ireland. I have never been outside of the US but this is a dream of mine. I would like to think that the locals at these two places would welcome me there and show me kindness. I would love to try mudlurking with someone there and here their history stories of the land. My younger brother got to go to Afghanistan but that's different, he was there fighting for our country so his visit there was not on his time to explore and meet people and enjoy the experience. I want to see England and Ireland and meet the beautiful people and explore the land and I don't think I would ever be fired upon. I believe Ireland would be breathtaking beautiful. Maybe someday.

I remember my folks took me to Jack London Sq. at Christmas time in about 1956. My dad knew I was bored stiff. He said run along and don't get into trouble...we'll be here at ? oclock and don't be late. You have a watch...don't be late! I met some kids and I guess they we're 'mud larking' on the San Francisco bay. We had a grand time...black kids, white kids, brown kids, kids that didn't know where each other was from. There was no reason we were to be together that day but we were together. I remember a skinny black kid. He was so funny. He had some of us laughing so hard we could barely stand up. Easy days...grand times with boys just being boys. I haven't thought of that day in so long. Thanks for this video and a very special remembrance of my youth.

I'm not sure this is the same person. In the video above she reads the prison record which notes Mary was pardoned in 1845 so it's unlikely that she would end up on a convict ship (unless she committed another crime after release?). Also if you look at the convict records for Tasmania the Mary Ann Franklin that arrived in July 1847 was 26 years old. The forget-me-not token shows she was 10 years old when in the London prison in 1844. Also re the Tasmanian convict records, the Mary Ann that arrived there was tried/convicted in CC (I'm assuming means Central Court?) on 23 Nov 1846 and was from Hackneys. The Mary A on the token I would assume was from Oxfordshire as she was sentenced in Banbury. All that said I could be wrong - I'm new to playing detective! :o)

And I today live on Van Diemen's Land. However, instead of being Hell on Earth, it is the most naturally beautiful state of Australia. However, we suffer from our State Government not caring about us, our local council's not caring about us, and the federal government only caring about the North of Tasmania because the marginal seats are there. basically screwing half of the population...

The Mary Franklin forget me not token story was fascinating, not at all hampered by being a contemporary creation. Someone went to a great deal of research and time creating it for someone to find, and just the right people did. Seven years for a 10 year old who was likely forced into pilfering a loaf of bread is almost unimaginable in this day and time. Thanks for sharing all your amazing stories, and Marry Christmas and Happy New Year, looking forward to a new year of tideline adventures!

Nicola, I love your videos and your finds (especially clay pipes) and Bill and Si as well ! I believe that piece of wood with the nail is from the hull planking of a large boat or a ship, judging by its double ended nature. The nails were driven through the planking and then a small washer, known as a "rose" I believe, was hammered down on the inside of the ship. You might think of it as sort of a cold rivet. Keep up the great work!

I went to Sloane Square because of Morrissey's song "Hairdresser on Fire."

Nicola. I believe the nameplate of the long lost sailor, might well be the nameplate from the man's 'hat-box'. I was issued with one of these when I joined HMS Ganges in September 1954, at age fifteen. These boxes were quite bulky and took up a lot of room in your kit-bag. Many of them wound up 'over the side'! Best of luck ad a happy Christmas. Bless the memory of Mary Franklin. A message for so many 'complainers' of the present day.

I thought the same thing about the engraving. It may not be that old but it definitely wasn't made to be a false item. I do believe it was made as a memorial item to the child mentioned. Maybe a school had a project to remember the victims of injustice and threw them in the Thames in the 1960s.

The button is the Order of the Garter. The shape of the crown dates it to be early Victorian (the shape changed to a more rounded crown in later years). The initials in the centre could be the persons name, or represent the land they own (such as something like BQ could be the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry for example). Nice find.

@@houngrysdigest1525 you mean lile the squatters that move into empty houses and then wreck the place The owner has to hire a lawyer then to get the squatters evicted. Eventually the home owner gets foreclosed on because he can't rent it out in order to pay the mortgage? Yep, those poor homeless people. All they want is a nice place to live for free. There is more than the, "poor underprivileged impoverished persons" story. They are one part of a society. Being poor isn't a crime in our modern society. Being poor does put you in a position they are more likely to turn to crime. The Draconian laws Mary had to live in are a thing of the past. The problems we have today are much more complex and only have a chance of being rectified by people that can identify and comprehend all aspect of the situation and be fair to all. We haven't found anyone with those qualifications, so we still got problems. I don't have the answers either. I just know to find them we have to look at it as part of the whole, not a disconnected problem. We have to look at truths, even the one that don't support our beliefs.

Thank you so much for a lovely story. Art or fact, the truth is a real person suffering extreme poverty was further brutalized by a system lacking in the simple word compassion. Interestingly the word used for the Good Samaritans reaction, compassion, is translated from the Ancient Greek splunknah. Splunknah is a word with a greater reaction than mere compassion. Splunknah literally means to have ones guts tied in knots. This is a far cry from mere compassion, or to pity someone. Splunknah compels one to act even if it is imprudent. When I worked in the inner city of Kansas City Missouri as a clerk in a convenience store, a ten year old boy came in and asked to make a phone call. His mother has thrown him out in the middle of a sub freezing night. He called his grandmother who said that it was not her problem. I had him lay down on our news paper rack and covered him with my coat and the previous day’s papers. He fell asleep there. I had no choice but to call the police who got social services involved. Lord I hope he made it out. Lovely piece. Change the world if you can, from the high plains of Texas.
