Join me on the Thames foreshore as I search for pieces of history. I never know what I am going to find when I go down to the River Thames at low tide, but I do know that I will find something - even if it just a button or a piece of pipe stem. In this video I find a few interesting objects from different countries. As always it is fun to do some research and find out as much as possible about them.
Thank you for watching - and for your comments and feedback.
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart
You do need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames and you can find the information you need on the Port of London Authority website here:-

Thank you.

The punt is possibly derivative of pontelo, an Italian word meaning “little bridge” which is the connection between the pipe and the glass piece you are working on. When the pipe is removed after the piece is finished it’s called a pontil mark. Common on handmade bottles and marbles. We try to either fire polish or cold work them after, harder to do with such a deep recess.

Hey Nicola. I have exactly the same pfenning. The coin tells you that '360 pfennings = 1 thaler'. The thaler was the equivalent of the pound. You should have a close look at the Paris medal for a makers name. It looks like a fine quality one from the 30s. The French often signed their medals and some were the products of famous sculptors. Wonderful video as always Nic.

Chatoyancy is the lustre on the beautiful jar. Bars of changing color caused by inclusions and light reflecting thereof. From the French for 'cats eye'. Might be a sprayed on effect like a glaze. In a low fire rake glaze this would be achieved by a metallic glaze. So a bit tricky but lovely when achieved!

I'm curious as to the process that makes bottles and glass iridescent in the Thames, is it some kind of reaction with the salts and minerals in the water? We are on lock down since yesterday here in Spain, luckily I am retired and my wife is here with me, so we will just work on the house, that will last longer than any epidemic. Everybody take care.

Excellent video; I love how you incorporate the sounds of the waterbirds and waves into everything, to me it makes it all so much more present. And I watched it with two of my pet Bearded Dragons on the couch with me, and as soon as the sounds of the gulls came up they both went on the alert-- if you're a lizard, birds are your major predator. Just a suggestions about what to make with that collection of phones: Two fish linked together, the image of Pisces. You could make such wonderful scales with the fronts and backs and other pieces of the phones! And the two fish, tied to one another... there's a nice little image of communication. I'm not big into Astrology but I do love how we're hardwired (depending on our cultures) to read certain meanings into symbols, and the houses of astrology offer so much fun to play with-- you could do a whole series with what you find. ^_^ Or just Pisces, for the River Thames; either/or. Whatever you choose to make, I'll bet it'll be wonderful. This sad bit of history about the button-maker's trade was pretty appalling; I wondered if the poor boy whose details you gave had a family that had fallen down in their finances, since he had once had a little schooling but it had stopped. Poor kid; I hope his life improved. Lastly, that bottle was just glorious-- it made me think of dragonfly-wings! Gorgeous.

I was very struck by the 1840 report on Mr. T. H. Hasluck and young, hungry uneducated George Smith. Charles Dickens' father was put in debtor's prison for not paying bills and 12 year old Charles worked in a glue factory pasting labels on bottles. That he wrote about so many children in such dire conditions as George Smith had to have come from his very own experiences. Dickens' books helped to change the awful child labor laws. "A Christmas Carol" with the two children "Hunger" and "Want" --- as well as Oliver Twist and Little Dorrit et al. Mr. Hasluck's name even sounds like one a Dickens' character would have.

The chewed foot has a name on the sole. It's upside down in the picture and maybe the first letter or two has been lost but there should be enough to go on for research. Might be the foot from a child's artificial leg? The underside is rather more accurate than you would normally see on a doll I think.

Love the sheen on the bottle! For the phones, maybe a school of fish. A kinetic ‘mobile’ lol. But call it a ‘Finetic Mobile.😀

Hello Nicola. I absolutely love your insightful and relaxing videos!! I'm 52 and have only been mudlarking for a year but have some very precious finds. Tho I have a lot that I can't identify lol. You should come to Langstone in Hampshire. There was a Roman settlement near here and the shoreline is vast and beautiful!! Anyway thankyou for sharing your videos and your knowledge!! Rebecca.

How long has it taken you to compile your Mudlark collection. I find Mudlarking very interesting, the thought of finding pieces from the past is exciting just to see how they lived. Thank you and keep on MUDLARKING!!! My favorite item is the PIPE.

Are ya Dutch? lf so respond to my other comment, about how the word "thaler" evolved to "dollar" in English. I say the Danes, others say the Dutch!

If enough lost phones could be gathered, it would be fun to fashion then into a phone booth.

Great finds as always Nicola! The bottle is so beautiful! All those poor young children making buttons. We forgot how privileged our kids are.😊💖
