It's always so interesting learning about what was going on in an actor's personal life that informs their performances. Like how in the Princess Bride the actor playing Inigo Montoya, Mandy Patinkin, father had died of cancer and he treated his final dual as though he fighting the cancer that killed his father.

I never knew that! Reminds me of Ray Liotta (RIP) dealing with his mother's slow, painful death from cancer throughout the filming of _Goodfellas..._ I heard he'd just received really bad news about her condition right before they filmed the scene where he walks across the street and pistol whips the neighbor who'd come on to and assaulted his girlfriend. You can see genuine rage and sadness there, for sure. Such an amazing performance in that film - I can't imagine what he was going through!

I started dating a guy who was similarly conventionally attractive, and I gradually realized he just wanted me as a trophy, not a partner. He would say something, some random fact, and I would ask how he knew that--what were his sources? He'd reply, "None of my ex girlfriends ever asked that, they just said, 'Wow, you're so smart.'" And he only liked that I was smart because it looked good on paper. I had one college degree and was in grad school. It made me more impressive/valuable as a trophy. The Others has a very weird, special attachment in my life. When I was in high school, sophomore or junior year I think, we were taking our state standardized test. When the room is finished, the people in it have to sit silently and just kill time until the whole school is finished before you can go anywhere else or do anything that involves noise of any kind. The teacher of the room I was in decided that when the room was done she was going to put this on, which was… a choice. Every time I see clips of it I am transported back to a crappy classroom desk with attached chair, straining to listen because she had this already quiet movie turned down low enough to not get busted by the administrators. Edit: but somehow I NEVER NOTICED CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON PLAYED HER HUSBAND???

As an Spaniard, I can tell you that the movie really resonated with more than the current state of things at the time, but with a whole lot of directors with enormous talent that were relegated to second line only cause of their origins. Many good films followed up, and sadly very few of them crossed the frontier of the country. It was a renaissance that has mostly died, but can still be sparsely found in some series like La Casa de Papel, that sadly only get mainstream traction when they are remade in Hollywood, same as The Ring revitalized the Japanese horror opera.

Any directors you'd particularly recommend? I'm tempted to do a Spanish movie binge :)
@josecorchete37322 жыл бұрын
@@helenl3193 Sure. I don't know your taste, so I'm gonna list some good ones in all genres. Relatively recent ones you have Fernando Colomo, Isabel Coixet, Julio Medem, Pedro Almodovar or Fernando Trueba. Some influential in the development of the Spanish cinema are Luis Buñuel, Luis García Berlanga, Carlos Saura, Bigas Luna, and Jose Luis Cuerda. As a side note, J. A. Bayona, the one from "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom", is Spanish too, and had some interesting movies before moving to Hollywood, but IMO he has lost the touch that he had in "El Internado". Probably the most interesting ones, IMO, are Buñuel (surrealism) and Coixet (nouveau). Many people have spoken about them, but very few have seen their movies, and that's a pity. If I was for a couple movies, "El Evangelio según San Mateo" and "La Comunidad" are very fine films that really don't let unprovoked. They are pure art, and as such they can make you feel things to love them, or to hate what you feel from them.

I loved Abre Los Ojos and found Vanilla Sky just annoying for many reasons. Among them, the title. It didn't mean anything, the director just liked the phrase. He almost used it as the title of his previous film, Almost Famous. Also, among the biggest changes in the unnecessary remake of the great original was the emphasis of the mole on Penelope Cruz's left breast, which hurt the great ambiguity of the original because then you would notice later when there were different breasts. It was... a choice. And not a good one.

The first time, after he staked a claim, he was told he was too young to keep the land. I didn't think of connecting it to Nicole's marriage to Cruise and scientology. It's awful what they did to her, and I'm really glad she got out. No wonder she was so happy to divorce him. I would be, too. it can't be said enough: scientology is a dangerous cult that gets people killed, at worst, and abused at best. Tom Cruise is talented, but my lord, he is *fucking crazy,* I'm sorry.

I never felt like Thanos deserved forgiveness. The fact that he has some semblance of a point, regarding the disease of "endless growth" is actually what makes his actions all the more damning. It shows that he's smart enough to know better. The fact that he truly loves Gamora, makes his abuse all the more unforgivable. It's already a terrible thing for someone to abuse their child as a way of releasing their own unresolved trauma and resentment. But what he did to Gamora is a whole other level cursed. He genuinely values his bullshit plan SO much that he is willing to abuse and eventually kill someone he truly loves. That level of deeply rooted arrogance is almost unparalleled in all of cinema. I've always felt that Thanos's relatability is intended to damn him all the more in our eyes. It certainly did in mine.

Honestly, sometimes I feel her critic is a little... quick. Like, you can't make a statement that broad (and miss that hard, IMO) without at least giving it a little explanation. She might have an interesting point, but if she's going to make comparative critic (which in itself is a problematic technique) I wish she would flesh out those opinions more instead of letting them stay in meme shorthand. No Country and Chigurh are a little more interesting than just "haha lol daddy" In this case it ended up not really adding anything to the point of the essay and just kinda became a "men, amirite?"-joke.

"or a way for us to excuse what we've seen them do" Anton is the worst extent of someone who just follows orders. Anton is one-note but the way he thinks isn't limited to him. As with Scientology, a lot of religions justify horrible things by appealing to a greater sense of morality that most humans don't reason/logic themselves into, like flipping a coin. Thanos does the same thing with the whole "it's for the good of the universe" shtick. Thanos is more altruistic in his argumentation but no one with a working brain should think either has a functioning external source for morality. The excuse for Anton is already an operating principle for millions it's just an uncommon one. Also she uses Daddy in the sense of a patriarch. What she says in the video doesn't address Anton but that's the way I view it.

“Heavy air quotes” 😂 My mother is a JW... it wasn’t as intense as Nicole Kidman’s performance but I need to see this movie!

I watched this movie when I was 11 with my sister. I absolutely adored it and have never stopped thinking about it since. So happy to see you cover it in this way.

Many of the greatest performances in film history came after major trauma. Jimmy Stewart fought in WWII, then gave us, "It's a Wonderful Life." "Everybody was great in 1946's "The Best Years of Our Lives." Peter Lorre's botched surgery and drug addiction gave us 1931's "M", about serial killer Peter Kurten. There are many others, but you get the idea. Just watch Orson Welles' "The Third Man" for a look at what trauma can do. His speech about the cuckoo clock is chilling, because it is true.

The others was released exactly 21 years ago in August 2, 2001 (Today’s August 2,2022)... 🥶 I have no idea Maggie published this video 2 weeks ago till coincidentally it popped up in the suggestions today. The YT algorithms are ‘inception-ing’ me ! 👻

Wow I had forgotten about this movie! I remember when I was younger My sisters and I would scare my mom by hiding under blankets and using the "but I am your daughter!" line. I like this shorter format btw! Off to add The Others to my plex

Kudos for the clip of the master's Magnolia tour de force, the on-camera reaction to which PSH defines well what I was thinking at the time.
