There is a great deal of doubt about fin choices in windsurfing land. Your explanation of fins will certainly be very helpful to most. For those who dare to go one step further;....... Soon there will be a movie on my DIY windsurf channel in which a fin can be reproduced in a simple way so that you can determine the layup yourself!!!! 5:28: I know that surname, bet his father is Torben which I met at Club La Santa at the Canary Islands where he worked. He sold my a slightly broken F2 Comet, which was my first board. Never could make it watertight but it gave me many "better than sex" -experiences. I'm grateful to him. I need to get back on the water (old bones or not) and are trying to catch up on the sport.

👍Those slalom actions were pleasing to watch, however as the wind power seemed to be reasonably strong I thought that the slalom actions would have been performed more swiftly and and tightly. I'm looking forward to the next race actions which shall be shown as Windsurfing is a delight to watch and practice.

I am in the process of purchasing my first carbon slalom fin and this video is very helpful. I am a lightweight windsurfer at 63-64kg. What size and softness carbon fin do you recommend with an 8.6 + 129 Falcon TE (80cm width) combo? This is my biggest, light wind setup.

Great Video like always, however from my personal experience I cannot agree with the comment that carbon fins last longer than G10 fins. Maybe my Carbon fins are to cheap.

How do you clean your fins? if someone has touched it for example .i've heard touching fins with your hands causes spin out.

Great Video, couple of quick questions 1- What is the rake you use for flat water (like Alacati) 2- Do you change your fins with respect to gusts (bigger fins for gusty conditions ?) 3- Does chopper fins performance for upwind are as good as downwind (?) I am planning to buy a new fin to use with my jp slalom 71 for (7.0 NP evo) I use F-hot 39 for (NP 7.8 evo but I think it is a cm long, maybe I should change this fin as well), I am 89 kg, couldn't decide between, f-hot, z fin or as you highly mention chopper (?) What do you think, the purpose is, of course, to go as fast as I can, but the fin should perform upwind as well, Thanks in advance, keep up the good work, Cheers

Do you use 71 - 74 cm boards with 8.4-8,6 sails? If yes what size of fin do you use? Some local pros told me that the perfect size fin for a 71cm board and a 8.6 sail is 38cm but it sound like a little bit small to me

@@philliphommel9790 Ja ist mir schon klar. Das Thema Lift einer Finne ist zur Zeit mein Lieblingsthema beim Windsurfen. Es ist so, dass es keine Kraft der Finne nach oben gibt (wie z.B. bei einem Foil). Wenn man das Segel nach hinten zieht und der Lateralschwerpunkt hinter der Finne liegt, will das Board anluven. Man gleicht durch drücken der Leekante aus. Der Bug kommt auf der Luvkante aus dem Wasser. Der scheinbare Wind hebelt über den Bug das Board aus Wasser (deswegen funktioniert dieser Effekt auch nur mit breitem Bug). Das wird natürlich von Finnen mit einer guten Führung und eher vorn liegendem Druckpunkt unterstützt. Es gibt leider ein altes Missverständnis. Wenn das Profil einer Finne mit dem einer Tragfläche beim Flugzeug verglichen wird, wird beide male vom Lift gesprochen. Nur bei der Finne ist es dann die Querkraft und kein Lift nach oben. Es gibt natürlich noch den Effekt, dass die Querkraft der Finne über die Länge einen Hebel hat und so das aufkentern entsteht, welches auch die Luvkante hebt. Dieser Effekt ist aber im Resultat nicht Linear und eher unerwünscht.

Es gibt drei Effekte, die man beim Windsurfen spürt und unter Lift zusammenfassen kann. Das eine ist, dass die Nase leicht hochkommt, das 2. ist das von dir beschriebene Aufkentern und das 3. wie "hoch" das board über den Chop fliegt. Hier ist es wichtig eine Harmonie aus allem zu Finden, denn die Nase muss hochkommen aber darf nicht zu leicht "abfliegen". Leichtes anheben der Luvkante ist wichtig, aber es darf auch nicht zu viel sein usw. Ich denke, das zeigt uns mal wieder, dass das was nach physischen Regeln schnell sein müsste, in der Realität beim Windsurfen nicht immer das schnellere ist.

@@Nico_GER7 Danke für die Superantwort. Allerdings glaube ich, dass wenn wir die beim Windsurfen komplexen vielschichtigen physikalischen Effekte richtig verstehen würden, noch viel zu holen wäre. Insbesondere für die Breite (makeWindsurfingGreatAgain) aber auch für Euch Pros. Ich hatte Kontakt zu Finnenherstellern und war erschüttert über deren fehlerhaftes Wissen. Das eine ist die Entwicklung über try and error und das andere über Verständnis.

weed 1 Hurricane 34, Carbon.....it met stone on the tip and on the leading edge.... soon will have a Gasoil CHR Max weed rake. Also have a set of Deboichet Custom SL2 for non weed conditions. Also have a Lessacher duo. Board 112l CA 2009 , 70cm, 7,8-5,8 free race sails - hobby windsurfer...non competition. All bought second/third hand, except the Gasoil being made now.

I use C-fins, did you ever try those? Your opinion? There, different models may feel very different, even with same length. Are there similar differences for the fin brands you use? Do they have several models? Friends of mine use Winheller a lot, one guy uses Sonntag. But we don't compete in Regattas ;). Gute Arbeit, weiter so!

I did try C-Fins at some point and didn't like them so much. I don't know wether they changed ever since, but back when I tried them I found the tip to big making them not release very well. Most fin brands have several models with different stiffnesses.

I haven't tried them myself but I have never seen a professional using them.I do use kind if custom fins. I've tested a lot of fins with Ludo from Chopper Fins and go with what works best with me and not always the latest model they put in production.

Aahhh how life has moved on. For all you youthful speed and slalom racers on current tech try getting your hands on a vintage Windsurfer Regatta... Nearly 40 years ago their fins were nylon, not even polycarbonate or glass. You could bend it sideways with your little finger. The biggest upgrade in 1980 was going from a wooden boom to an aluminium boom. Those truly were great days before the cheque book windsurfing that began in about 1984 and culminated in the near demise of the sport around 1989 and for the next decade when the designers and manufacturers threw out anything that was able to be sailed by beginners in the drive for speed, stiffness and MONEY.....

I am writing to You about fins. I am looking for something special for DefiWind. I have participated once and will go again. I have two Patrik F-race boards, 100l - 60cm and 120l - 70cm. Also, I have GA Slalom sails 5.6 - 6.4 - 7.1 and some freeride sails from 4.0 to 7.0. My weight is 100 kg. What are Your suggestions about all that?
