The Republic of Costa Rica. This small country snugly sits between two continents. It takes up the narrowest part of the land bridge connecting two Americas: the North and the South ones. For the last 600 years this peaceful republic has been living without calamities and perturbations with the only exception of the civil war in 1948. That domestic strife had resulted in abolishing of the country's armed forces. And now Costa Rica is one of the few countries that don't have army. The extra budget is invested into education, medicine and science. With 79 years, Costa Rica is the leader on average life span in Latin America. The biggest contribution to this achievement is made by Guanacaste Province, located on the Nicoya Peninsula. Age records in this region puzzle scientists all over the world.
As life expectancy continues to soar, more and more of us are living to well over the age of 100. We ask some of the oldest people in the world the question everyone wants answered: what is the secret to long life?

I think that Costa Rican life, especially in the countryside, is full of nature, harmony, peace, quiet, and zero stress. Also, one has to stay active working in farms, nurseries, walking, eating naturally, eating basic non processed foods, getting healthy fresh air daily, climbing cloudy rainforest mountains, listening to the calls of domestic and wild animals, going to the river, going to the beach, walking long distances to the bus stop, etc helps a lot.

My grandfather died at 98 years old, we are from Costa Rica too and we have always lived in the city. I remember sitting with my grandfather some times in the afternoon and he would tell me all about his youth, how he worked in the Isla del Coco putting antennas and also as a mechanic lol. Even to his last breath his memories were so clear that he never ceased to impress me. I miss him lots but it makes me happy to know that he lived a good life :)

The days when the Earth was free from all sorts of contamination, pollution and dangerous chemicals used to increase production of foods for human consumption seem over. It is the GREEDY, SELFISH and INCONSIDERATE intruders who go about destroying the Earth and shortening the lives of its inhabitants. My mother's grand aunt lived 126 years and was never sick. She died when attempting do descend into a well to draw water, but fell and had brain hemorrahge. There was another dame who was already 118 years, when I was a little boy. She was already 133 years, when I checked on her in 2016. I have no idea whether she died or is still alive. I believe that such longevity is something only GOD and Earth-free chemicasl can grant human beings. When there are those who eat the beef from a 6 months bull weighing 1,500 pounds, know that they are eating away the years of their lives by the intake of excess antibiotics.

Also, theres been a correlation with coffee and long living humans, and it's no coincidence that both Italy and Costa Rica are known for the coffee culture, In costa rica you start your day with a big mug of volcanic grown coffee, then after lunch you drink your ol cup of coffee, and in the evening you get your merienda with another cup of coffee. I'm in pretty bad shape right now, 0 excercise, 0 medical check ups, but i do drink my 5 cups of coffee a day and im doing fine for now, i hope i get to live for 100 years more, ill comment on this video if that happens :D

Low sugar diet, active lifestyle, reduced stress compared to "modernized" locations, reduced pollutants, community, and good genetics that end up stacking. If you look at Japan, it also shows the same factors adding up. Like it's not a secret We are willing to spend millions on wanting this longevity in our modern environment when we don't live in an environment Conducent to longevity. I thought it was of course genetics but my dad has now suffering from dementia at 83. We live in a community where houses are up on steep cliffs. He recently rolled his truck off of the cliff at least 200 ft straight down and 85° angle. All he got was a bump on his head but the truck was completely smashed and demolished. It has a very worried about him now three of us are here with him in the area and were seeing the deterioration of his mind. When I first came to Costa Rica in the late 80s, it was unusual to see a fat person and fast food was non-existent. That's all changed now. Obese people are common place and fast food franchises are everywhere. Now with Uber Eats, you don't even have to leave the house to get bad food. Its a pity.

I am from Costa Rica, but now I'm living in The Netherlands (Cold country) It is very common to find people who live more than 100 years or at least reach their nineties in my country. Some of the factors that in my opinion influence this phenomenon are: 1-The environment and the close connection with nature that residents experience on a daily basis. Even in the most congested places, you have the opportunity to move easily to a naturally conserved area and enjoy the flora and fauna. But if you prefer to go further, you can visit one of the beaches of the Pacific or the Caribbean. Or breathe cleaner air in the more mountainous areas where you can find volcanoes and waterfalls. 2- The climate. In Costa Rica you can find different microclimates, depending on the area and the season. However, throughout the year the temperatures are quite pleasant, in a range of 17c degrees the minimum and 31c degrees the maximum. This has a great impact on people's attitude since the weather will never be an obstacle to enjoying outdoor activities, releasing stress, and increasing motivation (it is not the same to go to work in a gray winter, then on a beautiful morning with the sound of nature) 3- Warm friendly people, with a great sense of humor. While it is true in Costa Rica there is the influence of other cultures in some territories, all of us TICOS feel identified by common values, one of which makes us feel most proud is PEACE. Since the elimination of the armed forces in 1948, we have become the oldest democratic republic in Latin America. When you grow up in a place like Costa Rica, you shouldn't have to worry about doing military service, much less about an armed conflict in the streets. I believe that thanks to this, Costa Rican society lacks serious conflicts between groups and makes it an inclusive country with the opportunity to have an acceptable quality of life away from violence. 4-The food. A place where you can find a variety of high-quality fruits and vegetables regardless of the season and at an affordable price. Which allows us, for example, to drink natural shakes instead of synthetic throughout the week. 5- Party and Enjoy. It is always a good time to celebrate in a country like Costa Rica, no matter the reason, you will always find people willing to have a good time with whom to share a beer or simply have a pleasant conversation. A very high percentage of the population speaks English, so the language is not usually a barrier for people from other parts of the world. I hope to return to my country soon. PURA VIDA !

The question is why the people of this particular peninsula live longer compared to the rest of Costa Rica. Cause can be nothing other than genetics as the other factors are more or less the same as in the rest of Costa Rica. Overall the average life expectancy is lower than for example in the Netherlands (where I'm from). And Why are people in the Netherlands the tallest in the world? It's also genetics. I lived in Panama 50km from the Costa Rican border by the way and the food is fresh and local and not all meat and not all plant based. .

@@Claude_van_Kloten Actually, the data of the past 50 years compared with the data of the previous 500 years show the opposite: average life-expectancies have risen in every country where child mortality has declined. The more people die in infancy, the fewer reaching adulthood......and therefore very, very few (%) would reach 60 years, 70 years or 80 years during the past several centuries....versus nowadays that most babies survive childhood, and life-expectancies exceed 80 years on average....Much easier to reach 100+ years when the average exceeds 80 years, right?

Serving God is the key, Happiness is another key guarantee, living around one's family independently and doing everything for oneself, unlike in the big cities and countries where old people are left isolated alone in a nursing home without the love and support of families and familiar people, eating good nutritious foods fresh and natural from the fields without preservatives, fresh air, and vitamin D from the natural sunshine. I wish I could afford to buy a piece of land there, I love to cultivate and watch things grow. Interesting facts to analyze: In 2019, life-expectancy in Costa Rica at birth was 80,8 years. In 2019, life-expectancy in United States at birth was 78,5 years. At that time, spending on public health was less than 6% of Costa Rica's GDP (PIB). At that time, spending on public health was 17% of United States' GDP (PIB). At the same time, Costa Rican state has a primary role in the healthcare logistics, so is accecsible. At the same time, in United States free-market has a primary role in the healthcare logistics, so you can get bankruptcy. Conclusion: some services are essential and shouldn't be ruled as business.

The high cost of health in the USA isn't due to "business", it is government & its inflationary spending. More than 50% of the $$$ spent on healthcare in the USA is government money. Go back to the USA healthcare in the capitalist 1950s, it was relatively cheap. Competition is the key to low prices.

@@itzakehrenberg3449 so you're telling me there's no competition in the healthcare industry in the United States? Here in Costa Rica you just have to pay as a progressive tax. If you pay 15 dollars per month you will have acces to treatments 100 times the minimum wage, easily. And of course it covers your family. Hard to believe is gonna be cheaper just because competition.

They did not live in cities, sit in a chair in front of a computer all day; they lived in places that were forested, clean water and air were plentiful, and had no home mortgages (built their own homes) no credit cards, no need to accumulate. Distrusted the government, and had strong community ties built on friendship and kindness. We now live shorter /poorer lives. It's obvious what the problem is.

I believe that the reasons for long life are rather obvious, as hollows: 1. Clean Air; the air is obviously very clean w/ high oxygen content and possibly saturated with ocean mist free of any bacterial bio-burden. It looks like water is also from mountain springs. 2. Life styles with minimal stress and minimal disturbances 3. Highly religious life styles, from birth to death very constant 4. Natural locally grown organic foods 5. Monogomous family and highly active reproductive and love relationships that are as solid as "family institutions". 6. Extended large families with strong family support. 7. Physically active, farming, walking, food preparation most of the above parameters do not exist any more in large city environmets.
